Many studies claim benefits from various supplements or products, but often lack crucial context around the true magnitude and practical significance of those benefits. When interpreting research, it's important to consider: 1) The amount of change from baseline - As you mentioned, if a supplement only improves cognition by 3% on average, that may not actually have any meaningful impact on a person's day-to-day functioning. 2) The statistical significance vs clinical significance - A finding may be statistically significant, meaning it's unlikely due to chance. But that doesn't mean it's clinically significant enough to matter in the real world. 3) Whether the changes are noticeable to the user - If a supplement improves a test score by 3% on average, can users actually perceive or notice that small benefit in their daily lives? Probably not. 4) The potential for placebo effect - Many supplement studies lack a placebo control, so some of the reported benefits may actually come from placebo responses rather than the supplement itself. 5) Consistency across studies - Benefits reported in one small study may not replicate in larger, higher quality studies. Consistent evidence across multiple trials increases confidence. So in summary, you're right that simply reporting a supplement "improves cognition" is inadequate - we need more details on the consistency, magnitude and noticeable-ness of those benefits to determine if they are actually meaningful or worthwhile. Unfortunately many studies lack that important context, so it's crucial to consider multiple factors and look at the big picture of the available evidence before deciding if a supplement is worth trying. Hope this overview helps explain the important considerations when evaluating research on supplements! Let me know if you have any other questions.

WARNING: long comment, but I’m genuinely interested in this. I started following Chael and Huberman in the same year during the pandemic. Love both your content. On one hand I’ve also thought the amount of supplements huberman takes (just to get a good night’s sleep for example-something he calls his “sleep stack”) is a little weird. On the other hand, i think it’s pretty reasonable that an elite college wrestler or pro MMA fighter would have 2-4 times the testosterone levels of the average guy on the street. Uncle Chael, just this past week, you said yourself that even an elite athlete should be training only 3 hours a day, even with a 30 minute drive to the gym. I think Huberman is saying that the average guy with average testosterone, who never experiences a flight or fight moment on a daily basis can massively increase testosterone if he starts commiting several hours per week training and fasting like is life depends on it, while throwing in some regular sauna. Of course an elite athlete isn’t going to spike their testosterone by doing the same things they’ve already been doing to get it high in the first place. Or am I missing something, and I might be!

You’re missing the grift…. Go to his podcast page. He’s selling more than chael. Mostly exotic supplements so you figure it out how a neuro scientist is hocking pills…. Cmon think Yes he’s smooth but cmon
@taylor_o Жыл бұрын
Im not sure what huberman actually said, but if he is seriously suggesting that you will 4x your test in any way over any sustained period, its a joke. Average guy has like 300-800 ng/dl, quadrupling that would take injecting a decent amount of test. Now maybe he said it 4xed for a brief window and wasnt talking about the exact same figure as chael is thinking about, etc. in which case i have no idea if its true or not. But i think broadly chael is correct, these guys like huberman, attia, and other life/bio/longevity/whatever hackers are massive noise to little signal, to the point i do believe its dishonest... This honestly comes across as an over-reaction. He's not my favourite podcaster, and I sometimes think that he speaks too confidently , but A. Huberman simply shares what he knows. He doesn't pretend that he's always right, nor does he expect that others agree with him. He doesn't denigrate or otherwise attack those with other views. His knowledge seems to be focused on what can be characterized in lab studies, and I've seen him invitee interviewees to fill the gap in his knowledge using their applied experiences in their fields of practice. I can't say much more about this slight because it isn't clear what it is. It would be helpful to describe what the disagreement is and why it is so offensive. It sounds like a friend got disagreed with but didn't voice his alternative view. Maybe the issue is one of developing the ability to voice differing experiences and opinions without antagonism.

In that case, it could be possible, even though these effects probably will not translate into a significant increase in muscle growth. Chael has good points though :D

As is often the case with Chael, clearly didn’t listen to Huberman at all (at least in the case of his MPMD vs Andrew Tate, he admitted as much). You can give Chael partial credit if you want to for the fact that the protocol that showed this isn’t one most people will follow. You have to do repeat sauna 20 in 5 out, repeated like 3 times, which is going to take 75 minutes, and the testosterone levels will spike, but not really sustain. Huberman says at that time, and other guests he’s had (Andy Galpin, Layne Norton) confirmed, that returns on this will diminish if repeated, and actual physiological effects (ie, results in muscle gain) will likely be minimal if apparent at all. The fasting is intermittent fasting (because he’s never talked about prolonged fasts) and if I remember correctly (which I might not) was that the gains in testosterone were fairly minimal. Finally, Huberman has talked about how extreme training (ie the training of basically every wrestler), will lower testosterone (acutely) and operating at extreme caloric deficits (again every in season wrestler) can lower your testosterone production. Also, wrestlers are using the sauna to dehydrate, and all of the benefits are about acutely stressing the system and then recovering to “normal” which would involve rehydrating. So no, wrestlers are not following these protocols. Protocols, that again, were never claimed to be equivalent to the use of TRT or just straight up super physiological steroid use in terms of muscle growth. I will say, Huberman doesn’t always contextualize every finding he talks about perfectly, (he does contextualize a lot, but to do so any more than he does, would make him unlistenable). Also, hilarious how late Chael is to game in commenting on any of this. The sauna episode has to be at least a year old. Same for fasting. And comparing Huberman with the Liver King? GTFOH

As far as I understand it , Dr. Huberman is only interpreting these studies for us. His specialty is in ophthalmology. There are good studies and bad studies. A single study is not helpful if it is not reproducible. You also have to look at the population in the study. I am guessing in the study that they were not wrestlers. Since wrestlers are very well conditioned I suspect there is not much room for their testosterone and growth hormone to increase through physiologic methods alone. I believe Chael is not comparing apples to apples in this case.

The main conundrum for me is elite wrestlers (athletes) don't represent the general masses. But if a general person followed this protocol starting to move towards being an athlete they may very well have a doubling of testosterone especially if they weren't eating correctly. I would be curious what the avg test of an elite athletic population vs in general. It's well known testosterone has been plummeting in general. I like the challenging conversation.

I used to haul horses across the country and i learned by doing that if you're tired driving at night to turn on a light... my sun visor had a good light perfect to get in your eyes, wakes you up. I'm sure there's science behind it but... it works. Comfy warm seat, dark environment , perfect for sleeping...darkness gets you. I'd leave it on for however long, the visor was perfectly situated to get direct light. Saved my ass from the late night nods. Stopping and taking a 10 minute walk helps too. Just thought i'd share.

1:33 No Chael. You may have been told that in college but this is pretty well known nutritional science today. Long chain carbohydrates get broken down into glycogen. Glycogen goes to the muscle cells. Much more difficult to be stored as fat in excess. Sucrose (sugar) is 50/50 glucose/fructose. Once your liver runs out of space to store fructose it is stored as fat. “High fructose corn syrup” is around 55/45 fructose/glucose. I may be slightly off on some of that but generally I’m right. Most nutritionists worth their salt understand 100 calories of rice is not the same as 100 calories of sugar. They may be the same number of calories and close in macronutrients but they are not digested and stored the same at all. Caloric surplus and deficits still apply. You can lose weight eating just sugar if you’re at a deficit. You can also gain weight eating zero sugar if you’re at a caloric surplus.

You are very entertaining Chael but you forget that Huberman always says what he is saying is a summary of the research that has been done by other people. He is basically doing book reports and sharing what someone elses book says so that we we don't have to read all of the books. That is very different from lying about things and making claims based on his own thoughts. Most of your arguments are well out of context btw. That being said, I will keep listening to your stuff because you are a great performer and my job can get boring.

@@oliverqueen1853 it's a pattern as old as time. In the fitness world once you get too big people will usually come at you, nitpicking stuffs that you may have been wrong about in the past and using it to pain you as a dishonest person. Unfortunately there have been many dishonest people in the fitness world (V Shreds) so attacking someone for it becomes way easier. And on top of that this is one of the first time the fitness world has seen an influx of people using scientific approaches (Layne, Nippard, etc) which the meat head community don't like/understand. MPMD had his share of attacks too, and the more popular you get, more the number of attacks that come your way because Drama=Views. This of this as a soap opera for us meat heads.

As a research scientist specialising in lifestyle, exercise, sleep etc. having worked with some of the worlds most prominent scientists (typically in their 60s or 70s!!). Prof Huberman started with fantastic content and strictly stayed in the academic/neuro lane. Then i went to read the evidence a few of his statements were based on. But I found studies on mice. Often statements based on one or two studies. And this has just gotten more frequent. Its sad. It could be done in an evidence based way. Statements like the sauna. How often. How long. Does it differ depending on age? In a world of missinformation, it just adds to the problem.

Coming from someone who has a PhD sister, don't let those people talk down to you if it comes to it. Big difference between research/book smarts, and street smarts/intelligence. The academic world lives in their collective bubble. This last thing isn't a point of condescension, but just remember that a PhD candidate is doing the bidding of their 'advisor' aka their boss. So the ideas they reach in their thesis to get their degree, wasn't something they came up with all on their own. They followed orders.
