Who didn't take Ecstasy in Australia during the early 2000's? It was everywhere, usually good quality, made people happy and have a good time. It's the generation of that time. From what Joey is describing, around 9:25ish & onwards, is classic Bi-Polar Disorder, I know it all too well & have had it since my mid-teens, I'm now 48 & only medication keeps it under control. Intense "natural" highs that can last for days, getting more & more erratic, until you become so over the top with delusions of grandeur & constant uncontrollable thoughts that you invariably crash so hard & wear yourself out to the point that you can barely function & become beyond depressed & in my case incredibly sad. Like falling into a bottomless pit of misery & hopelessness. I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. That's why he was probably drawn to the alcohol & particularly to the drugs, to escape the constant up & down cycle & to try & get the same highs he would get before being medicated. The drugs used to treat these disorders stop the overwhelming depression but at a cost because they also stop you getting the "highs" & make you feel very flat & dumbed down. I think he was very brave doing this interview.
