Andrew McCarthy (Pretty in Pink, Weekend at Bernie’s) joins us this week to talk all about his New York Times Best Selling book “Walking with Sam” and how he’s learned from tumultuous experiences with his own family how important it is to have honest, adult relationships with his children.

Weekend at Bernie’s was my dad’s favourite movie. I watch it often because I get the memory of when he watched it the first time and was crying in laughter. It was the only time I saw him cry, and it was amazing seeing him cry from laughing so much. I love the movie but it has a very special meaning to me because it helps me remember my dad.

The movie Weekend at Bernie's is a National treasure. My wifes mother loved that movie so much that she wore out her VHS copy and we got her the DVD and she had it on loop most evenings in her home. When she got ill she had it on almost 24/7 in her hospital room and we remember her laughing at it the night she passed away. Great interview and I will pick up the new book by Andrew McCarthy, it sounds great. We still watch Weekend at Bernie's a few times per year in our home and it holds up great.

Oh my teen crush! No one ever made making out in a barn as romantic. The shower scene in St Elmos Fire was just epic. 😊😊😊 McCarthy is just a great actor to make us all believe in love in so many fantastic movies. I’m old enough to remember how bitter the Brat Pack label was and seemed just brutal to all them for no good reason. Honestly it was confusing to a teen fan as to what happened all of the sudden to these actors we all loved and grew up with.

Mr. McCarthy’s role on White Collar is among my all time favorite performances. There are those actors that can become the character to the point where you forget the real person for a brief time. I don’t know why, but that particular role stands always stands out in such a powerful way for me!

A lot of emotion came over me during this podcast. The discussions, the tone, the affability, the honesty... all amplified by the fact that Andrew takes me right back to the 80s, especially since he hasn't changed one iota. He must have signed a pact with Satan to age so gracefully! He really gives us the qualities of a calm leader, almost a psychologist, and at ease with himself! But darn it! These pesky commercial interruptions, always at the wrong time, are a real nuisance, even if I understand the need for them! There. I had to say it.

Weekend at Bernie's made me discover Andrew McCarthy and I absolutely LOVE that movie. I laughed so hard the first time I watched it. I watch it quite often now. To hear him talk a little about it and for it to be positive...it just made my heart so happy. I read his Brat Pack book not too long ago and was able to learn more about him and his career. I just went through that with my mom, who was done raising me at 12, telling me at 12,’Hope this works out for the best. For us.’ Then last November, my sister called and I went to see her. There was nothing said. I wasn’t looking for an apology, maybe, for once, I was looking at her to show me it’s okay to screw up, your parents aren’t perfect but they did their best with what they had, in which my dad and I were always close. He showed up. The day I left my childhood home, to be given to a man who I guess was my dad. But he didn’t have a home, nothing. He was a traveling Salesman. There was never a conversation that ended without an I love you. Never. I hadn’t seen her in 30+ years, she met only one of her grandchildren, once. And the day I last saw her, I wore a graduation shirt with said child on the front. Towards the end of the visit, I asked her if she knew who it was. She was at a blank. No clue. Parents are so confusing. Even though I had 30 years to deal with that visit, i wasn’t prepared to have it staring me in the face, of the one person on earth who’s suppose to unconditionally love me, didn’t.

As a group The Brat Pack were the coolest kids and we all wanted to be them - but their weren't seen as individuals. But as a teen individuality is frowd upon by your peers. You want to be seen as an individual but do not want to stand alone in the world. It's a double edged sword of belonging yet being recognised as independent

This was great. Love all the brat pack movies, especially the John Hughes ones. They really informed a lot of my own sensibilities when writing characters; I've always wanted to write those kinds of young characters you just don't really see much of in film today unless its somebody doing a sendup or pastiche. There's just this je nais sais quoi about those brat pack-era characters that actors like McCarthy inhabited that are just so 'of the era'. I get really nostalgic for them.

I’ve never watched St. Elmo’s Fire all the way through. It was that movie that was always on when I was in a hotel all throughout the 90’s. So frequently it’s like reading a book where I’m filling in the blanks. It’d probably would wreck the whole experience if I watched it straight through on streaming.
