Gary makes a great point about the Orange Order being a fraternity. Christianity is constructed as a Paternity, many theologians interestingly argue that fraternities like the LOL and the Free Masons (who use the same lingo such as worshipable brethern as well as pledges and binds) are an affront to the Christian paternity. The other thing that seems to come over on this podcast is the continuous need of Unionists to be validated by English people.. nobody from the six counties needs to explain themselves in the Republic as we see them as 'us' .. we all need to work the common ground and shrink the differences right across these islands.

The infrastructure in the south isn't that great. We have no motorways or train lines in Donegal for the size of the county. Bus Eireann have cut a load of services to surrounding counties and Dublin. I think if people in the north want a united Ireland they need to live in the south for a year so they can get a greater understanding of the cost of living from both sides of the boarder.

There's an assumption about unionists that they're always loyal to the current sitting government for some reason which is completely false and doesn't happen anywhere else in the UK. Its simply a belief NI is better off in the UK, none of the mainland parties actually stand here

They couldn't stand in NI. The politics in NI is deeply sectarian, none of the British parties would get a look in.

His parents moved to the loyalist side because they wouldn’t have made it in the republican area being a mixed marriage.

Really interesting to hear from the unionist point of view. Considering it's only just up the road and we're all on a small island, people in the south know very little about the unionist community. Really all we see are the huge bonfires, teenagers throwing bricks at the police and burning effigies of SF politicians and Irish flags. I'm sure that is just the extreme element, what the average unionist thinks is far more interesting. Personally I don't get the Orange Order, I don't know how an organisation that discriminates against colour or creed is allowed to operate in this day and age under UK law (or Irish law for that matter for those in ROI), it's an outdated organisation that should be forced to either open it's membership, or be banned.
