This is by far the best studio tour. He is actually using his gear and giving brief demonstrations and has sounds preloaded into protools etc. It’s cool when people just show us the gear they have but it’s way better when they actually show us how they use their gear in real time rather just name off brand names.
@jameslopez68072 жыл бұрын
This has been my favorite of all the tours because Matt still has that childlike hype that most of us share when it comes to making music. He's more excited to let us here things rather than showcase gear. Love it!
@iwillnevergetone52 жыл бұрын
this is up there with the best studio tours since Matt actually plays and let's us hear all the gear & instruments. that makes the world of difference. great vid. we basically just watched him write like 4 new songs

I think what made this studio tour so good is the studio owner actually played sounds through the gear!! Encourage that more in future tours --- makes it so much more fun!!

I have been watching a number of your studio tours for around 6 months now as I prepare for the creation of my own project studio up in Central New York. I learned a lot from the various tours and will incorporate what I have assimilated into my studio design. That said, I found this particular tour to be THE MOST INSPIRING of all of your videos (so far). To be honest, this was a life-changing event for me. I found Matt Mahaffey to be incredibly inspiring, transparent, inquisitive, honest, educational, humorous, and unafraid to push the boundaries of creativity. He is an absolute master of his craft. I will probably have to re-watch this a number of times just to digest the breadth of the content and put it into perspective so that I can draw upon his knowledge and experience as I approach my own projects. I have an extreme case of G.A.S and have been accumulating a trailer-full of equipment over the past few years in preparation for this plunge into music production (guitars, synths, amps, MIDI keyboards, a full mic locker, racks of outboard gear, preamps, cables, etc.). I am not a professional musician; more of a creator/producer/video editor. I produce training videos for extremely complex software programs. My background is in computer technology, professional lighting, high-end theatrical facility design, and recording studio design. I am leaving my corporate job of 24 years this summer and will embark on exploring my true passion with the creation of my project studio. I will actually build it from the ground up and try to incorporate a lot of what I have learned from all of your videos. I found Matt to be incredibly inspiring. He has instilled the confidence in me that I can start with my Nektar Impact MIDI controller, a Moog Matriarch, an Arturia synth, a Yamaha piano, a vast collection of guitars and other instruments, racks full of outboard gear, multiple DAWS, hundreds of plugins and sample libraries, no real training at reading music, and just basic guitar and keyboard skills to unleash my long-suppressed musical creativity and produce some quality productions. I realize that my gear collection is just a means to the end goal, but I believe that I have the necessary skills, just needed someone like Matt to inspire me and remind me that the journey of a thousand miles starts with the first few steps. I am in awe at what Matt has accomplished and am now determined to unlock the potential that I have kept hidden away inside for so long. Thanks to you both for sharing your experiences with others and inspiring us all to find and express our talents.

I guess he's most famous as a producer but his band Self put out insanely good music. The songwriting was just unbelievable. They're probably the one band I'm shocked never made it to be really big....though it's probably because Matt made the songs kinda askew and never really tried to write for radio hits. I genuinely think he's a musical genius.

Initially, I was unsure about the setup and Matt Mahaffe, but upon reevaluating the video from a different perspective, I have come to the conclusion that his entire setup offers numerous possibilities for composing music and a lot of creativity. I am a composer and engineer, but I have spent too much energy on mixing and mastering equipment and too little on creativity. Matt Mahaffe has found the right balance, and now I can appreciate him as an artist.

My family moved here to Nashville back in the mid-90s (I was in high school), right when the whole Spongebath Records scene was blowing up. So many cool memories came out of it. Seeing SeLF multiple times and getting a signed pair of drum sticks from Jason (still have them, unused!), eventually getting to know the guys from The Features (another band on that label) once my mom became their photographer for a while (blew. my. mind.), etc. After so many years as a fan, very...very cool to see Matt's studio and hear that new SeLF music is incoming!!

i basically grew up on his band self. loved all his albums (including the many online-only freebies), other projects he produced like call florence pow and mondo primo, basically everything he touched. self’s 2005 farewell concert in nashville was my first show, and their subliminal plastic motives anniversary show in nyc a decade later was the last concert i saw before moving abroad. this is an incredible video - it was such a great experience getting to watch the man in his element for a full hour. i still cycle back to his music in a big way once every few years, and this is getting me back into a self mindset for sure…psyched for the new album but now i also really wanna catch up on everything he’s ever done, including the TV scores and all that. does anyone have a (mostly?) definitive list of his releases and credits? i'd love to catch up
