I got the CXA81 when it came out in Jan 2020 and I think it's superb. My set up is as follows Rega P8 (new version) turntable with Origin live Encounter tonearm and Hana ML cart. Rega Phono Aria preamp. KEF LS50 speakers or Sennheiser Momentum MK II headphones. The sound i get through my speakers and headphones is phenomenal for all types of music, I'm not sure why some people have commented that heavy rock will not sound good on this amp, the opposite is true, my RL Hot mix of Led Zep II and ACDC Back in Black vinyl sound incredible as does heavy rock from cds or digital files, same goes for electronic music. For cds and data discs I use a Sony UHP-11 Blu ray player as it reads every type of cd/dvd/blu ray disc plus a usb port, the sound wasn't great using rca cables so I changed to using a single digital cable bypassing the dac in the Sony player and using the dac in the amp, the upgrade in sound is unbelievable and is the best I've ever heard cds sound, I've even started buying cds again now that I have such good sound with this method. My PC is also hooked up to the CXA81 through usb and again the sound is stunning especially using foobar 2000 to play SACD files. Don't be put off by the people saying heavy rock won't sound good on this amp, they obviously have never heard it and are making false claims without evidence, the only issue I had with it was it sounding a little bright for the first couple of weeks but then a full sound emerged with a glorious bass and soundstage.

My next purchase is the CD transport, not because I need it, but because I want to own all three pieces. Aesthetically the units are beautifully crafted. Lunar grey is also a really nice finish. It's interesting that you call out the addition of a DAC because people will likely use an external or the CXN V2 if they have it, but then also lament the absence of a built in phono stage. An internal DAC and/or Phono preamp will always be inferior to an external at this price point so if you're mad about either being included but simultaneously upset about the other NOT being included, that makes no sense. Otherwise, appreciate the review as always.
@TxZick2 жыл бұрын
The CXA81 is strong, detailed, very good speaker driver control, the sound stage & depth is as described by Andrew. The sound was what I was looking for, like the very slight roll-off of the highs for Monitor Audio speakers. Analogue play-back sounds like audiophile integrated amps of the 70-80's. Pairing with the CXN v2 is wonderful. I prefer no phono preamp added cost. Better sound (run flat) than the newer Yamaha A-Sxxx models, their sound controls are nice features, but slightly too bright for my taste. Chose the CXA81 over the Denon PMA-1600NE for cost savings but the Denon sounded very good. It does compete with my reference system- Emotiva XMC, XPA system for 2-ch in some ways, especially vocals- very clear, precise, and natural. Bass is controlled and deep for an 80 watts amp. What it lacks- would like to have a simple remote control for the amp and the remote volume control is too sensitive-increasing volume level is aggressive, no DAC or volume level read out. Too many commenters never heard the CXA81, ignore them. The amp is well built, quality parts and it's overwhelming highly rated by most buyers

We needed a receiver for our Partio because, as you know, TX summers are long and we spend most of our free time outside. I kept my CXA-80, because it has tone controls and the CXA-81 doesn't. The sound is so laid back, smooth and warm, I agree with your review! Again the watts specs are modest, but in the real world it will sound very loud and muscular, I guess it is due to its high current design!
@dadkins543 жыл бұрын
I've had the CXA-80 for several years now and I still love it. I'm using it as a desktop amp for near field listening using LS50s. The first time I heard it was in a vinyl shop in a very large room powering a pair of huge electrostatic speakers. I was blown away with the sound as it drew me towards these speakers. (I believe they were Martin Logan) I've only used the CXA-80 for running bookshelf speakers and it has been proven to be a great purchase. Of course it's always interesting to keep up with the latest audio gear but I definetly like having tone controls.

A good friend who sells CA equipment told me most people buy the CXA81 as part of a bundle with the CXN V2. Sometimes they'll upsell a CXC CD transport but a lot of buyers are now pure streaming. They don't even own CDs or vinyl. An integrated amp makes perfect sense in that context. I heard these driving a smooth pair of Tannoy XT8Fs and it blew me away. Great timing, superb detail and just the right amount of vintage AB warmth. It sounded like a much more expensive system.

I have the CX trio, I’m very happy with it. It was bought to replace an ageing 90s System. I’m very much invested in CDs but thought it was about time I tried streaming too. (Which is great for finding new music or old music that you’ve never heard before) I later added a Innuos Zen Mini and re-ripped all our CDs to FLAC on it, for backup and convenience. I run the CXC and Zen, as well as the TV sound, through the CXN for it’s slightly better DAC, but also it’s ease of use. My wife doesn’t like too much complication when listening to music and finds the CXN and Zen pairing to be ideal.

Hi, I would be really interested to hear your views on how the CA CXA81 sounded paired with the Klipsch Heresy IV's compared to the towers you had in the video? I say this as I have been considering the Heresy IV/ Forte III. Also, I would be very interested in hearing your views on the CXA81 used with the USB direct to a laptop, as this is how I would probably use it. I guess this is why they included the built in DAC for those that wish to bypass the CXN V2

I would suggest Monitor Audio Bronze 500. I recently replaced my JBL LX60 from the year 2001. Listened to many different speakers and only the MA Bronze gave me what I wanted: Broad clarity like the JBL, but with an effortless low end. I find the Bronze 500 to be very balanced across the frequency range. You should definitely look into a demo of them.

I bought this amp recently and absolutely loved the sound. I auditioned a lot of amps in this price range and to me it was by far the best sounding. When I got home, within the first few hours of use I started having issues with the Cap5 protection and in the end the amp wouldn't stay on for more than 2 minutes. I ended up returning it. Pity...

@Andrew Robinson thanks for the detailed and thorough review. I am actually considering pulling the trigger on a CXA81 (my first integrated ever!). You say in the video that you streamed music from your iPhone through the CXA81's Bluetooth. I heard that the CXA81 does not support AAC so the streaming quality might not be as good as, for example, using APTX-Hd with an Android device. Would you please share your experience with this specific feature? Was the streaming quality good? Thank you! :)

Just wondering if you could tell me if it’s true that there’s a known issue w/ the CXA 61/81 and its implementation of bluetooth that’s causing the volume control not to respond appropriately to the level that is set on the iPhone. Seems several iPhones spanning several yrs have the same problem w/ the said 2 models. Is there a fix coming? Are you guys aware? I'm also about to purchase but suddenly experienced this at the dealer.

So interesting how we all hear different things which makes it all the more apparent that personally testing a product is key. As far as Marantz goes, it's my least favorite receiver that we've had in house. I know Andrew is a long-time fan but I just can't get past the styling and horrible menu.

I've tried quite some amps in this price range with my (quite) demanding Elac UB5 speakers, but the CXA81 blew them all out of the water: Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Nad. The sound is a bit rich, and it is in my opinion not the best amp for electronic music, but to my the sound of this machine is sexy and engaging, and it has some real power. 80 true watts, not the marketing mumbo-jumbo kind.

Our suggestion for another integrated amp to try is the Rogue Sphinx V3. I am looking forward to hearing it at our local shop when they open for a casual visit. The Sphinx lineage has had some good reviews and the music referenced in some of those reviews is music that we relate with. DACs and streamers will likely change frequently as tech changes. The Sphinx may be a good core piece to hold for many years. We would be interested in your thoughts and Kristi's thoughts.

My favorite integrated amp of all time is the Marantz PM-94. You should check out the Reisong MT-34 MKII EL34 vacuum tube integrated amplifier. I know it is a low powered tube amp but, pretty much everyone has an outboard DAC/Streamer to use and yes you need a phono pre-amp but, again easy to get. The amazing thing is that for less than $600.00 you can get a pure tube amp with point to point wiring and amazing tube sound.

Good review again Andrew but I would agree with the designers of the cxa81 on not having a built in phono stage. Like many high end amps this amp is designed with adding an external phono stage of your own choice to it. It's strange they added a DAC to it though as personally it prefer to add my own like you suggested.

I'm after this amp for some time now and hopefully I'll get it soon. First to drive some old Whaferdale VR-400's as a temporary solution, then we'll see. Curiously in most other reviews I've read/watched, they preferred its internal DAC over CXN v2's. But it any case I'll either go with the newer model CXN100 (which I think has an improved DAC), or with Eversolo DMP A6. So the bonus feature of XLR inputs will hopefully be ideal.

@@DeeTeaDee I've moved the Dali's to my office where they are sitting on my desk. I've replaced them in my living room with a pair of JBL L52 Classics. The JVC subwoofer I've been using with the Dali's is still being used with my new JBL's. The JBL's have a better low than the Dali's. Although they still benefit from a subwoofer as they are also bookshelf sized. The JBL's sound much better, but they cost me 999 Euro new. Which is several times more expensive than the Spektor 2's. My apartment's living room is roughly 4x5 meters. So about 20 m2. With thin walls so high volume is not an option. With a room this size big tower speakers are in my opinion overkill. My L52 Classic is the smallest in JBL's Classic lineup. There are also the L82 Classic and L100 Classic. Small, medium and big speakers. My final setup in my living room is as follows. My CXN V2 and CXC V2 go digitally into a DacMagic 200M, which is connected through XLR cables to my CXA81. All Cambridge Audio gear. My Dali's are connected to my old and trusty Philips FR 966 receiver to which my laptop and Bluesound Node X are connected. So yeah quite a bit has changed since my original post. The Dali's do lack a bit of bass, But when using a subwoofer next to them they will become much better. P.S. Cambridge has replaced the CXN V2 with the brand new CXN 100.
