Hey Andrew, I don’t even know where to begin with thanking you for doing this, and for all your kind words. Your video was shared with me and I only just discovered it :) You said it so nicely, ‘if you want to learn song structure and texture, transcribe such a song’ - and I did exactly that. I picked Change because it’s one of my favorite songs and back at the time was way out of my league. I technically slowed down some parts and transcribed them, then learned them by heart. Many of Steve’s beats weren’t in my vocabulary: like the 9/8 (i think) mid part on the tom rim with the ostinato hi-hat - as soon as it gets to the second bar the hi-hat is in the off and starts to feel weird. That was tough - or after that part the stack cymbal/floor tom rhythm in the bridge. It’s a dense part and it took me a while to figure out that Steve just alternates his right hand between stack and floor tom. And then the outro which Steve largely improvised (he messaged me back on FB) and I couldn’t find a fitting click for it, so I just played over the original recording, hence why it’s not a 100%. Thanks again Andrew! And like someone pointed out, my own band is called ‘glaston’, if you’re curious to dive into some of my own drum compositions :) stay well and cheers.

Judd is such a beast, one of those relatively under-the-radar drummers whose mind clearly works differently than most when crafting his grooves and it comes through in every song. I've lost track of the number of times I've been playing along to this song thinking I've got my kick in 4 and my hat/ride in 3 only to realize I'm off yet again.

Dude! Welcome to Karnivool! This song is so special, I believe it has everything, from stanky heavy grooves to raw emotion. The acoustic part which you so correctly described as a bit Radiohead’y really gets me all watery eyed. Also for another tear jerker listen to Aeons by Karnivool too. We have Tool fans and Vool fans and they’re both freaking cool.

Another vote for Sound Awake attaining masterpiece status, my musical tastes are varied but this album is top 10 for me. To me at times, no matter where '1' has buggered off to, Judd always brings the groove. If i had to pick my second favorite child of the 12 on Sound Awake, it would be Deadman. Thanks for your support and perspective on music Andrew, appreciate your efforts.

I was super excited to have you react to one of the most iconic Karnivool songs, especially since it was a drum playthrough. As a drummer I've grown to love so many technically amazing and creative drummers but Steve Judd for me personally has always stood out with a really unique way of using the drums. There are Karnivool songs where I to this day still feel the song in the wrong time signature, there have been songs where the drums feel more powerful than in any other songs and there have been songs where the drums seem to drive the song so incredibly well all the way through. I can definitely recommend giving Karnivool more listens in the future, these guys are truly fantastic musicians. Big fan of yours

This is a fucking nice song. I've heard of Karnivool, but never heard their music before. Reminds me a little of the Mars Volta who I love, maybe not as erratic or chaotic but in that realm of math/progressive rock. Thanks for reacting, man. Time to work on my left hand. In terms of learning a song, the first part of the process should always be that you love the song, and listen to it regularly without trying too hard to learn the parts. Internalise it all unconsciously; the feel of it, the timing, and the sections mostly. Then that should make putting sticks to the kit a lot easier when it comes time to actually playing it.

This is spooky - I was listening to this song today and thinking it would be the perfect song from the perfect band for Andrew Rooney to review! If you haven't heard of Karnivool before, they are sort of the Australian version of Tool - a cerebral, progressive metal band. Going to see them in Frankfurt, Germany tomorrow night. Love from an ex-antipodean now living in Germany!

I was lucky enough to see them live yesterday and the dynamics of the drum parts and the band in general is just insane... You could feel the whole room and all of the crowd being lifted up from one crescendo to the next all the while being swayed gently trough the complex almost tribal grooves.

Steve Judd is a friggin master and Karnivool are in another realm. There's too many songs in their catalogue to mention where you'll be in awe. I'm sure by now you've gone down that rabbit hole. Deadman has to be one of the most perfect songs ever written.

Not a drummer here. Been really enjoying the insights I can get from watching/listening and having a pro explain some nuance, point out some things to appreciate. You sometimes go back on a vid - I sometimes go back on your reactions to re-watch the drummer! so much to see in this one, great tune, awesome cover. TIL: Karnivool. I get a Tool vibe from it. What's it like for a pro to watch + listen, vs just a listen? The ears tell all, but there seems so much more going on when good drum-cover visuals are added in the mix. E.g. the little finger-moves and alternates on his snare-hand, man oh man!
