@@RasAlXander So overtones are created because of tuning. In a perfect fifth example, like a C and a G, if it's tuned correctly, you hear an E for the C major chord even if an E isn't being played if everyone's in tune together and it's correct. It's really impressive and hard to do!

You know that a drum corps is good when you can hear the "pseudo C" from the mellophones For those who don't know, in a lot of these clips you can hear what sounds like a "High C" coming from the Mellophones in really long sustained chords, even though none of them are playing it (it's really hard to tell at first, but once you can actually pick up what it sounds like, it's unmistakable). It happens because all of the notes are perfectly in tune, and that pitch is generated by your ears, because our ears are really good at inserting sounds in perfectly tuned chords. You can hear the difference at 4:40 and 5:34 . Go back and forth between them and compare/contrast and you'll immediately understand what I'm talking about.

I am a brass player, a drum corps veteran and longtime fan. I appreciate what it takes to create this sound, and the amazing and talented people in the horn line and on the staff that it takes to create it. And no recording I've heard truly does it justice. But for outdoor performance I still prefer the sound of the G horns...not because it's the way we did it back in the day, but because it's a better sound. More overtones, an edgier and brighter timbre, and it IS possible to play them in tune. Just one old guy's opinion.
@noahsadler66324 жыл бұрын
I mean it’s possible to play them in tune, yes, however way more difficult to keep them in tune or to even get them in tune in the first place (takes too much time individually and far too much hassle, especially given how wonky they can be). Plus they’re very difficult to get an entire sections for a decent price now. Overall, newer models just preform better and last longer compared to G Horns and just have lower maintenance needed, although yeah they sound pretty nice
@KyleNally4 жыл бұрын
What was the transition like between playing a Bb horn all year except for DCI? I've read in several articles I can't dig up just now that the G to Bb switch was in large part to ease that transition so performers didn't have to learn new fingerings on top of a DCI brass book and drill (I made a comment to that effect above) but it would be nice to get a personal account from someone who's done it themselves of how 'hard' that transition actually was.
@bobareebop4 жыл бұрын
