Hi Andrew, great to see a group of artists painting a similar scene, everyone has a different eye which creates different moods in the paintings. I struggle to paint on a large canvas in the studio with plenty of time so it’s impressive to see a finished plein air painting so large. Still love those fly overs of the NZ scenery it’s breathtaking. And to anyone who aspires to be a better painter I can absolutely say 100% to grab a copy of Andrew’s Winter Landscape tutorial, you just can’t put a price on someone’s life long painting experience all rapped up in 7.5 hours of footage. The DVD has been my greatest and most treasured art purchase. Thanks again and look forward to the next episode.👍

What I find perhaps most inspiring is seeing a painter of Andrew's caliber acknowledging areas where he can improve. In my opinion the essence of plein air painting is exploring the dynamics of light and the use of broken color. At a certain point there's a trade-off between form and color, and I think you can see that with Andrew, who is a master of form, value, and detail. Instead of placing a time limit on his painting, he should consider, as an exercise, resisting from any blending of color on the canvas -- just putting down individual brush strokes. Someone with his talent could be a master of color as he is of form, even though there is a trade off with an individual painting.

Thank you, Andrew! I have been wanting to go out and about to loosen up. I agree that it is a good exercise for us. I find that when in my studio I get tighter and tighter, smaller and smaller brushes and THIS proves to me I need to get out and get the bigger brushes out, time constraints/observation/shifting light working bolder and faster with stretch and open those tight spots within me. It is much like a yoga retreat for the artist. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!

Great landscape video, Andrew. I can't tell you how much your videos provide inspiration for those of us who are still learning the craft, altho I suspect that I will still be learning 20 years from now. Or, at least, I hope so. You live in a beautiful part of the world, my friend. I am happy that my wife and I had the opportunity to visit and with a little luck, we may do so again. It is amazing the size paintings that Crump works on, but then I see some of your paintings - studio - and the size is mind-boggling. Looking forward to more Plein Air videos. Cheers, Mate.

Beautifully done. I live in the North East, England the Derwent Valley is equally inspirational and beautiful to me. With fields and a winding river and forests and copious woodland, there are Victorian and Elizabethan bridges that are grest detail. The valley is thick with history from way back to the Romans and beyond. Old characters like Whiskey Jack spot the story to hint at in the paintings. There is an old railway now the well known Derwent Walk much trodden on foot, horseback and bicycle by myself while growing up. An old Hall called Gibside Hall over looks the valley and was once owned by the Earls Of Strathmore Queen Elizabeth’s family. It’s furnishings now in Glamise Castle Scotland. Makes for great atmosphere and a feeling of historic foundations. Sadly I developed MS so can’t walk or ride in my old beautiful haunts now. But the valley is still my inspiration for both writing and painting. The English Lake District was much trodden and ridden when I was a child with my parents and ever since those days back in the 1970s I yearned to paint and draw well. Life necessity always pulled me off course from my heart. Now forced into retirement and limited mobility is not totally a negative experience because I have a sound grounding of the country life and its breath and subtle waves of uplifting the soul. I hope that eventually I can translate some of that deep romance to my painting. Painting to me is like poetry. It should flow and calm and inspire and even educate the mind without a word being said. Because your viewer will draw their own conclusions and feelings for your efforts. They will either like or dislike your style. Since beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course. The point is, whatever the outcome of your work, you took that brave first steep and opened your heart and soul to be judged. Every artist hopefully or well established like yourself, will never find their art becomes tight and stiff and without a soul if you always remember it’s the beauty of the scene from your own inner self that bring out that soft warm feeling from every brush stroke. If you for your work and love every brush stroke carefully set down. Your art will become amazing and will endure for many generations to come. I hope this is your path and thank you so much for your teachings here. Gives me real hope for my own faltering efforts.

Hey, Andrew, another great video, well done, although those mountain vistas are making me jealous. I love mountainous regions, so spectacular and varied, truly a great place for artistic inspiration. Although our coast here in WA is also pretty good. So interesting to see the different approaches from your very talented companions, but John's huge canvases for plein air leave me in awe. Hi Andrew, here's Ariel, your former-scientist-turned-artist-from-Chile-friend again. I always learn so much from your videos. They are always such a pleasure to watch. I have very recently done a few alla prima paintings, and my first plein air, thanks to my friends at the ChilePinta art collective. I also attend a life drawing workshop every Saturday evening, and last week we changed the usual short poses routine and did one long pose instead, and I painted from the live model. I've ended up loving alla prima and plein air, something I didn't think possible previously. I have to say that much of what I've learnt over the past year has come from your KZbin channel, especially the Virgil Elliott interview last year. So thank you for everything you've posted!

Great information as always. I try and take something from all the videos I watch and there was much to learn here. I love the way you incorporated a sand fly in the sky in both your paintings.
