I put together a detailed video explaining how to hook up your steering
wheel controls for one of the many android car stereos out there.
This technique should work for just about any type of car. Basically buy the PAC unit you need for your car type (ford, mercedes, honda, etc) and hook it up the way you would if you purchased a Pioneer car stereo. The output to connect to the android car stereo will be a 3.5mm headphone jack style plug. If you have any questions on what PAC unit, you can always contact Crutchfield customer service. Just tell them your car and say you are buying a Pioneer Avic-5100nex.
I hope this video helps some people. I struggled like crazy when I bought my first china android car stereo. I hooked my steering wheel control wire to Key 1 and of course it didn't work. The customer service for Joying and Pumpkin are extremely friendly but there is a language barrier.
One thing I forgot to mention. After you hook up the PAC unit, you have to run through the PAC programming instructions for Pioneer. It's very simple. It just requires pressing the button no the PAC with the key in the on position. You then run through the list of key presses in order. Just follow the instructions. If you don't do this step, you wont be able to program the Android Stereo.

on my ford focus 2 (EU) it works without any adapter. on my quadlock connector on the car side i have swc+ and gnd. just connect this 2 wires to the HU to key1 and gnd (and gnd is important). For the cars that have 3 wires you will use also key3. some of the cars does not have resistive steering wheels controls, instead it will send via can communication the digital signal when you press the keys. In this case a canbus decoder is usefull (also it will decode when door is opened, AC temp, etc). the most common problem that peoples will do is to cut key1 and connect on the head unit and forget the ground wire (on head unit). on most android head units the ground for SWC must be connected to the car ground.

excellent video, I'm working on a similar project for a 2008 satun vue, except I will be wiring directly to the source without a module control. Ive tried it already and it works but the wire also goes to my cruise control and interferes with the volume settings so my idea is to isolate the volume control power button from the circuit.

I missed this comment. Can't really say for sure how to do that since I'm not familiar with your car. The easiest thing would be to just get the PAC module for your car and you probably wont have to mess with any isolation.

Just to add: This applies if your vehicle does not have a resistor based signal from SWC, newer cars has CANBUS based steering wheels and what not, which means you need an adapter. If you have a vehicle which has resistor based signals, it should work out of the box without the need of an adapter.

Joying said its head unti should work with canbus via their ISO plug. I spoke to them and the guy was a bit wishy washy but told me the pink wire is canbus high. but I havn't been ablet to get that working. (edit: I see that they are selling a canbus box so I guess those wires are not used for canbus signals, but you need something to translate the signal into resistance.)

I have the 10.1" one in my '99 Trans Am (video coming soon) and the 7" in my 2000 Trans Am. It's a shame the big players like Pioneer, JVC, Kenwood don't get on board. I pulled out my Avic-8100nex ($1000) to install the $260 Joying and it blows the pioneer out of the water. Android auto is just too constrained. I have aftermarket steering wheel buttons that worked previously in my Hizpo head unit by directly connecting the key 1 and 2 wires to the same wires on the head unit. You have to run through a simple sequence setting up which steering wheel key is what button when programmed for a Pioneer or Sony radio. Then once fully hooked up, you run through the programming of the Android stereo itself.

Nice and clear video. This cleared some things up for me. I have a question, I'd like you to help me with. My car doesn't have steering wheel control, as it is from 1991 and it simply wasn't an option for my car. I don't even want steering wheel control, but my android headunit only has 5 buttons on the front of the screen, vol+ and -, mute, home and back. I reassigned the mute button to be play/pause so I can pause spotify, as I never find myself using mute function, but I'd like to have next/previous track, and maybe a button for navigation, and the I got the idea of I could make my own panel with physical buttons and mimic a steering wheel control input through key 1 and 2 like you did. My question is, how do I need to make the circuit for the button panel? I've searched on the internet for a universal circuit board to resolder the buttons or something but have not found one yet, So I want to make one from scratch. Can you help me?
@1999TransAmWS6
@1999TransAmWS6 6 жыл бұрын
You'd want to search for "prototype board". It should be a pretty simple circuit. If for example you want 6 buttons, you'd need 6 resistors of different values. One end of each resistor would all tie together and got to Key 1 on the radio. Hook up a momentary push button to the other end of each resistor. Then tie all of the other end of each push button to Key 2 on the radio. That should cover it.

I have a 2004 Escalade. I installed a Joying 5.1.1 Android radio in. The Escalade uses a CAN system. The ASWC-1 was having issues converting the CAN info to resistance for the radio. I was getting strange results. I bypassed the CAN system. I cut into the wiring under the steering column, disconnected the steering wheel control wiring going to the Body Control Module, BCM, and connected directly to the “Key 1 and 2” inputs. It did NOT work. From testing determined you need to put one wire from the wheel controls to ground and the other to “Key 1”. The steering wheel control wires do NOT go across Key 1 and Key 2. One wire goes to Key 1 and the other goes to ground. The radio reads all resistances on Key 1 and 2 in reference to ground. Worked great. No delay in any operation once programmed.

The system was giving me issues so at the base of the steering column on the Escalade on connector C201 are pins B12 (BLU) and B31 (LT GRN). These are the wheel control's. I grounded pin B31 ans connected B12 to Key1 of my Android radio. DO NOT connect Key1 and Key2 to B12 and B31. The radio reads the resistances to ground not across Key1 and Key2. I programmed the radio, works perfect. No delays very quick reaction. I can send the wiring schematic if you need it.

Hands down, one of the best explanations on canbus connect here, thanks a lot for that. One question; since you seem to have tried bith android 4.4.4 and the 5.1.1 lollipop, which one is the better one to choose ? I'm close to deciding on a Joying 7" for my 2006 dodge Charger, but cant decide between the "older" 4.4.4 or the new 5.1.1. The hardware unit seems to be exactly the same.. Cheers
@1999TransAmWS6
@1999TransAmWS6 8 жыл бұрын
Thats a tough one. As of right now the 4.4.4 runs much faster and uses up less memory at rest. There are many tasks on the 5.1.1 that seem to bog it down. In my opinion the 5.1.1 desperately needs 2gb of RAM. The 4.4.4 runs fine off 1gb....its just not enough for lollipop. Day to day the 5.1.1 is fine. You just need a bit of patience with some apps. Joying is good at putting out software updates. I just updated my lollipop last week and it has sped up but still not as fast as the 4.4.4. Joying has told me theyre working on a 2gb unit that should be available in about 6 months.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like it could be worth opening up the unit and exchange the 1Gb with a 2gb stick, its like 10$. These units seems to be upgradable, like tablets and laptops. I'm comparing Joyings UQ130 with the UL135, they are identical except the latter is 20$ more expensive with lollipop, the former is with kitkat. Both I can buy without additional 100-150 import tax/customs fees. Reading the rather good joying support forum, one can even upgrade the kitkat bought version to lollipop rather soon. Seems they are working on updates for these.

had a look at the site, rather suspect Hongkong outfit, poor display of products, etc. I would stay away. Also, more core are not necessarily better. The OS and apps need to be able to utilize the 8 cores, otherwise they are just idle. Also, These type octacores are new and just run at a third of the speed of the quad cores, might influence responsiveness. When cores a new, not many(if any) even support to use all 8 cores.. But Im not a lollipop expert, wouldnt know if it supports 8 core cpu. Cheers mate

You made some good points. The website is pretty terrible but there are many people on the XDA forum (known members) that have already bought one. I'm waiting to see what they think of it. It's a small company that was on kickstarter a while ago. I do love the Joying set up though so I might just wait for their 2GB RAM unit. I agree and think it's not the processor but just the lack of memory that is causing the Lollipop unit to lag a bit. You really see it the most when you launch Google Maps. You just have to be patient, sometimes it can take up to a minute. I know a lot of main brand cell phones had the same issue when they upgraded from kitkat to lollipop. The 1GB of RAM just wasn't cutting it so they slowed down a bit. Lollipop takes considerable more memory. I have more apps installed on my 4.4.4 than my 5.1.1 and the 5.1.1 uses about 200mb more RAM even at rest. That's 20% of the total memory available. You just have to remember to fully close out apps. If you switch from Pandora to IheartRadio, go to the window icon in the notification bar and swipe away Pandora, etc.

Joying radios only have a Key 1 and Key 2 wire. No steering wheel ground. Now I did have a pumpkin radio about 2 years ago that had Key 1, Key2, and ground. I was able to use the same technique but I can't remember which wires I used. I think I used Key1 and ground to hook up both wires from the PAC module jack. I left key 2 unhooked. I could be wrong and used Key 1 and Key 2 and just left the ground unhooked. You might just have to play around and see what combination works. I'm almost positive I never hooked the steering wheel ground up to regular car ground though.

@1999TransAmWS6
@1999TransAmWS6 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I did. They are very close but not exactly the same value. I had my ohmmeter set up for Kohms and it was rounding to 1 decimal place so the 12.1 that it displayed was rounded to 12,100 ohms. So the real value was probably like 12,050 and the 2nd key press 12,070 or so. The android stereos are probably assigning values +/- a few hundred so it can't tell the difference. My Pioneer and Sony radios had tighter tolerances so they could tell the difference. The only way around it to get more buttons is to root your radio and install one of the Xposed modules. There's one out there so you can program both short and long presses so it doubles your keys. The new Joying 5.1.1 Lollipop radio also allows you to program short and long presses but it limits you to just 7 keys.

+1999TransAmWS6 Thanks for the answer and advice. I did not think about an accuracy issue of the android radio. if this is the case, I can think of other solution then you mention. How about modifing the button resistance to get higher resistance differences by adding some resistors to the steering wheel button harness? It means messing with car original harness, but what the hell... what do you think of it? I have got Ownice c200 and it has promised an update to higher android some time later, so it would solve my problem too, but I do not trust Chineese to much in this...

+havrajz. No way to modify the factory harness, at least not in my car. It's the PAC module that is sending the resistor values, not the steering wheel. Possibly programming the PAC with different functions might work. 6 buttons for me is more than enough though. Vol Up, Vol down, Home, mute, navigation, and back arrow. I dont need the skip to next track function since it doesnt work for apps, just the factory mp3 player that sucks. I mainly ise poweramp.

I'll try resequencing the unit again, as per the previous comments below, to see if that'll work. One question I do have for you in the meantime is that I noticed there were 2 black ground wires coming out from the PAC unit. Do they both need to be grounded or just one? I'm not sure what you mean by "Pioneer or Sony version". The PAC unit I bought is the "SWI-RC", and I have the dial on the side set to "7" (which is for Pioneer/Sony as per the instructions and your directions from the video). The program light lights up on the module when I press the program button on the side. The buttons on the head unit from the steering control setting flashes when I press them to try and set it, but it doesn't seem to pick up the signal when I'm pressing the buttons on my steering wheel to try and program them. I'm not positive I have the module programmed properly so I'm gonna try and redo that today. Thanks for your reply. I look forward to hearing from you after you get a chance to swap your radio.

You might have been able to differentiate the resistances better on your multi-meter if you turned it down to 200 ohms. Setting it at 200k gives you a significantly lower resolution, and is therefore less accurate since it's set to read values across 200,000 ohms instead of just 200. Setting it to 200 would theoretically give you 1000x better resolution.
@1999TransAmWS6

agr00m true, it's just to show they are different. The values it gives doesn't matter. You can't adjust it. The radio just needs enough difference between the values to be able to program. 99% of the people watching probably don't know what resistance is, lol

It depends on the output of your car. If your car puts out a resistance value then you're okay. I'd say 80% of the cars out there don't and require an adapter like the PAC. If you have a multimeter you can always check to see if your car outputs a resistance when you hit the keys. You can always just try without it and if it doesn't work then buy a PAC module.

Great video. can I intepret your experience that the PAC unit will read a CANBUS signal and convert to resistance? I own a 2007 VW GTI and the factory steering wheel buttons sends signals via the CANBUS. Joying have stated on their website that CANBUS steering wheel buttons signals are fixed and cannot be customised on their radios using their CANBUS adaptor harness. Another problem is that not all factory steering wheel buttons can be used. for example the phone button. So the method you described is a work around to make all buttons work with a Joying stereo? Also does the resistance value change between short and long press of a steering wheel button? For example, I only have one phone button. Could it be possible to set up as follows - short press = answer call. long press = hang up? I welcome any feedback.

The best thing to do is call PAC or call Crutchfield. Tell them the car you have and say you have a Pioneer AVIC-8100NEX or any radio from Pioneer with steering wheel controls. Let them know you want a steering wheel control module. They'll point you to the correct one. Once installed it will take your CANBUS and convert it to a resistance then you should have no problem installing with my method.

I just wanted to share some info from my experience at implementation: 1. You do need the SWI-RC interface for this to work. Other units may not work - I previously had a SWI-JACK interface unit from my previous Clarion head unit which did not work. Reason is #2 below... 2. You need to have your SWI-RC set to Sony/Pioneer/Other for this to work properly. Other brand head units receive different signals that the Android head units cannot interpret properly. Since my SWI-JACK did not support Sony/Pioneer/Other, it did not work (reference #1 above). 3. Don't skip reading the PAC SWI-RC instructions carefully. I had banged my head against the wall for an hour before I came to the part on my vehicle ('04 Chevy Blazer) that pin 6 on my harness needed to be connected to a +12V switched source (ACC). No wonder nothing was happening when I pressed my steering wheel controls and it acted like nothing was happening - it didn't have any power! There are tons of notes for MANY vehicles in the instructions - make sure you read the notes for your vehicle thoroughly. Hope this helps, and thanks to 1999TransAmWS6 for your *AWESOME* video! This was a HUGE help to me!

One part I forgot to mention in the video but I have in the description is the Pac unit itself has to be programmed to your steering wheel controls. The procedure is in the pac instructions and not too bad. It basically has you press the black button on the Pac with your ignition on. the pac led will stay lit. you then follow the sequence in the manual...press what steering wheel key you want for mute, the led will flash then stay lit, then you press volume up on your steering wheel and so on.

The pac takes the car data signal and converts it to a resistance value. There's a few cars from the factory that put out a resistance signal so the pac is not necessary. my car for example only has one factory wire for the steering wheel control and it puts out more of a data signal that only the factory radio can understand. The pac can read the data signal and convert it to resistance values for the android HU to read.

I use a Pioneer right now in my Volvo V70N, but I have a Joying on it's way home. The adapter harness that i use between the iso-cables and the factory harness have two loose cables named "Can" and "Can low". Figured out that ControlPro had messed up, they said that I should use Can (Pink and black, data input 1) but Can-low (Pink data input 2) worked connected to the cable marked "Can-low" on the iso-adapter. My questions are, if I connect the Can data input 1 to the Can cable that's not used on the iso-adapter, will my Joying get more info? Like open doors and stuff like that? Or will I be able to get that info with just the Can data input 2? Which pin did you break off on the 3.5mm jack? Ground?

No Joying wont be able to do any of that. It's just like a standard tablet. The best you can do with Joying is steering wheel controls, and get the tire pressure adapters plus a OBDII adapter. That's about it. I know pioneers can do lots of stuff like that with the Maestro adapter

Kind of a bad video, but Joying can do that in some cars. m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJq7fqOEnchpnc0 On the 3.5mm jack, was it the ground that you cut off? I going to use a 3.5mm - RCA adapter and cut off the RCA connectors, that's why I need to know which cables to use.

@@ExtraKimB Interesting. I've not seen that before but since I don't have those types of cars I've never watched the videos either.

Does anybody know if I can hook it up direct to the 3.5mm wires to key1 and key2 without the 3.5mm female socket? will it work?

Absolutely. That's actually the way I do it now when I install these radios in friends cars. I cut the 3.5mm plug off of the PAC and solder one wire to key 1 and the other to key 2. It works perfect.
