Not a lot of compromise? This phone literally uses an ultrawide camera (IMX355) that was used in midrange phones from 4 years ago (for example Poco F3) and even then was considered pretty bad for the category.

Does it come with actual "screen protector" or "scratch protector"? Now a day, when people buy a screen protector, what people are looking for is a 9H Tempered Glass that help protect screen from shatter/break when drop. So, is this one a thin film that only protect the screen from scratch or actually a glass that protect it from a drop.

I'd be happy with this if it had an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor. Living in a cold climate, our hands get quite dry outside. An ultrasonic sensor is mandatory here. Many times with an optical sensor my phone wouldn't unlock

This phone makes sense with the incentives... as he states in the US I was able to get it for 450 ( 50 discount for early bid - 100 extra off for any phone any condition I had one old android that barely worked lol - you can get a used android from eBay for 10 dollars) and I got the Oneplus Watch 2r which I sold for 160 so getting this phone for 290... I don't think there's even a phone that comes close with that price.
@AndroidDigest
@AndroidDigest 26 күн бұрын
It also comes with more storage in the base model. And I will tell you from personal experience, I always had struggles with the optical sensors that you would get in the Google pixel phones. My hands are often dry, but I've never had an issue unlocking this optical sensor. Not saying that should sway you this way. But just saying, it unlocks much more than other phones with an optical sensor

This is by far the best review of the 13R! I appreiciate your honesty and your focus on value as I am one of those people who don't need the flagship and am more interested in the compromises you have to consider in the cheaper model. I definately prefer the look of the 13R compared to the 13 and the chip is last years flagship anyway. As an average user, I can live with all of the compromises but I am disappointed with the fingerprint sensor. The location of it looks ackward and apparently you need to activate the screen before you can place your finger down on the sensor, I think that will be a PITA. There are some great offers on the OnePlus website but I think in the UK we don't get the charger included which is a bummer.
@AndroidDigest
@AndroidDigest 28 күн бұрын
That's one negative I did forget to point out. The fingerprint sensor is a little bit low on the screen. It was extremely fast, so that was a big plus. And I never ever had issues unlocking it. So it really seemed like a non-issue overall. But it is a little bit low

This looks like a good phone, but it lacking an IP rating and wireless charging at $599 when other $599 and lower devices have it is a huge miss in my opinion. I'm currently using a Moto Edge 2024 I gave $150 for that has an IP 68 rating and wireless charging.
@AndroidDigest
@AndroidDigest 29 күн бұрын
Right. But it's faster with better charging speeds, and a better display than most phones at this price. Like I said in the video though it depends on what tradeoffs are right for you
@5150crazyfun
@5150crazyfun 29 күн бұрын
@AndroidDigest the charging is only marginally faster and the same is true of performance. I'd rather get an IP rating for protection and wireless charging just in case the charge port stopped working. Then comparing $150 to $600 plus tax and I can definitely live with the minor trade-offs. Another pro for the OnePlus 13R is longer support but again for the much cheaper price I can live with the Moto Edge 2024.

@5150crazyfun
@5150crazyfun 29 күн бұрын
@jimboh.2654 15 w is wireless charging, wired charging is 68 w. So the OnePlus 13R is only 12 w faster. Which is why I said marginally faster. The Edge 24 has a poled screen. The 13R does have a much larger battery but for the price I gave it's something i can live with.

The odd thing is their slogan “never settle” seems contradictory. You would think they would just have one phone because of that. Having a phone that is more superior than the other would mean that you would be settling for less if you got the 13R.
@AndroidDigest
@AndroidDigest 28 күн бұрын
Yes and no. They would probably argue the other $600 phones, maybe the Pixel 8a, they are settling for slower charging speeds, smaller batteries, slower processors, so the 13R would argue you are not settling when comparing at this price point. I do get your point though 😂😂. The premise of my review is that you have to find the right compromises and they say never settle

@@AndroidDigest The product page says it comes with a 55W charger. It only goes up to 80 or 100W if you have a separate charger. Apart from the weaker charger, the fact that it's a single cell 6000mah (vs dual cell on OP12/13) means charging times are twice as long than both those phones. This is an important caveat to mention.

Big compromises : 1. Single cell battery - increases charging time by 2X 2. Glass protection downgrade vs 12R - ridiculous 3. No dolby atmos audio - earlier phone did 4. Water resistance - ip65 ! Phones half the price of 13R have ip68 5. No OIS in telephoto lense - ridiculous 6. Poor camera performance - poor color gradation 7. No 4K recording - neither in telephoto lense nor in ultra wide! 8. King of green line dead screen!

Point 8? They're using the new BOE screen already. If you're complaining about 8, then I hope you're also complaining about it in Samsung and Apple too because they're all using the same AMOLED screen before this as OP because that's the real reason the green line issue exists.
@dizk8488

Great comment. The other thing to mention OP 13R only comes with a 55W charger which factors into the slower charge speeds. The OP12 and 13 both come with an 80W charger in the box.

Sorry but I believe you're incorrect. This looks like the same charger that will charge 80 Watts as the OnePlus 13 charger. I'm not sure where you're getting 55 Watts from. @AndroidDigest
@AndroidDigest 29 күн бұрын
I'm having a little bit of a hard time understanding your comment. I think you're saying that you've been using larger foldable phones, and it may be hard to step down to a smaller phone. I agree that might be tough if you're really used to foldables. The reason to step down is really because foldables are a little more fragile. Those inner screen protectors tend to wear down and they normally need to be replaced after a year or so. And the inner screens have a likelihood of breaking after 2 or 3 years. Sometimes earlier. Plus obviously they just cost a lot more unless you're waiting a year after release and buying it used. Some people would just buy a tablet and then buy a phone like this to get by. Realistically, when you're comparing this to a foldable, most foldables like the z-fold that don't even have the best cameras anyway. And this does have a flagship processor. I don't think you're going to see much of a degrading in quality or anything. But obviously, when you're in a foldable, there's a reason why. And if you love them, you might want to stick with what you love

Thank you for the review. Any idea how this one compares to the OnePlus Nord 4? Where I live, the 16GB/512GB variant of the Nord 4 is almost 43% cheaper than the 13R and I think that's a tremendous value if you exclude the photography. And I'm not sure if the improvement in camera quality is worth about 330 euros, especially if the ultrawide and telephoto on the 13R are essentially best to ignore in favour of the main camera, as you say.
