Just a 24hr challenge? You barely get used to the phone. Make it 5-10 days. Try also to put custom roms that are more recent, with newer software etc.

While I do agree, this would massively increase the scope of the video. Would've been cool to at least have some idea of how the phone would work with custom roms, but it's mostly a video for fun so eh :)

I don't think this is how you should do it. This phone might be bricked by its software but it still has a pretty capable hardware. Just flash a newer version of Android on it, Lineage OS something, maybe android 12 or newer, and then we're talking.

Yeah this video should really have been titled "I tried running an android 6 phone with no third party apps" instead of someone really trying to make the most of hardware. They could have gotten a lot more done with third party apps too, newpipe would have worked if KZbin didn't for example.

Google killed it with software "update" and with "upgrade" from 4 to 6th Android and then stopped at all, leaving this beautiful phone unusable. Not In My Watch! I am still using it, as you said, flashing it with open-source Android images and it is speedy, smoothy and pretty and usable as the day one! Old phone challenge. This needs to be made a yearly thing for a while month. Some Gadget Guy [Juan Bagnel] & his community did it a few years ago. We should pick an old phone and go with it. It's fun and a bit of a detox from all of the non stop addiction ment people have.
@wyterabitt21492 ай бұрын
Even without a custom rom, Firefox works on Android 5+. Why would you stick to a terrible old browser? There are open source front ends for KZbin that will be vastly better than the app or browser for older phones. There will be slightly older versions of keyboard apps with the keyboard swiping feature. If you were going to use this phone as is, you would at least get these things fixed at least not just accept them.

You really didn't give that phone any chance, very unfair. The latest version of firefox works all the way down to android 5, and even if you didn't wanted to use it for some reason you could have installed the apk for the last version of chrome that supported android 6 (version 106 from 2022) which is still out of date but way less out of date than the ancient chrome that ships with the system image. You could also just installed android system webview's apk that last supported android 6 toı improve apps that need it. That phone is more usable than you allowed it be, even without using custom roms. I was using a note 4 last year, switching between stock 6, custom rom 6 and an unofficial android 11 lineage build, it was usable.

I used to use Apple everything, and my iPad Mini 2 was more or less fine last year when I finally decided to get rid of it - fine, but not good. Decade old model by that point, and I'd had it for around 7 years. The Z Fold 6 I have now? As a fold I'm certain its inner display isn't going to hold up for 10 years, but that aside, I bet I could do everything on it in 2034 that I do on it today.

What a sad review. firstly should've tried some period correct offline apps. It looks so clean and nice still, and like everyone mentioned an up to date rom would make it function like new. And what exactly was the point of this video if you weren't excited for it. The cameras were decent and the rolling shutter in video was awful but would have loved some samples. It is quite a half assed attempt at what could have been a great review I am sorry to say. Despite what the software support feels like, nothing has really changed that much since the Nexus 5, and it was the phone of choice to showcase new apps for 5+ years.

Also have the first huawei p8 lite and with custom rom and pico gapps, that also is very much usable, no fancy shit like instagram filters and whatnot but all google stuff works, though i don't use it at all really because the s7 is so much better. I do understand the idea of attempting to use the stock software but those who wouldn't consider a custom rom also wouldn't try to use an old phone and instead would just justify to buy a new one straight away, so maybe a revisit of this phone with an updated rom would be nice.
