I think some people are missing the point about this particular guitar. It's an extremly well made replica of Andy Summers guitar. It sure has fantastic tone and in the hands of a capable player the guitar does the talking. Yes its expensive but what else would you expect? After all it is a collectable. I'm going to build the 'Mule' prototype displyed near the end of the clip. Like the man says, Killer sounding guitar.

I have played a few of the Custom Shop Fender guitars and they are really amazing guitars. The Tribute guitars are not just phoney baloney, good time charlie, plastic bananna copies of the artist's guitar...they are well researched exact replicas. The process is very labor intensive. I do a bit of relicing myself but it's mostly just cosmetic stuff. The Fender guys take it to a whole new level.

I love teles and I always love when people hotrod them with humbuckers etc, but you have to love the distortion effect in the guitar, so handy.

His student either had the wiring done or did it himself. It is unknown. It is not as elaborate as suggested. More unique than anything else. Andy got it that way. Dennis Galuszka was intended to be the master builder for the entire 250 that were made. Fender executives were hot to get the guitar out while The Police had their 2-year reunion tour. The batch was then split up between all of the Custom Shop builders with Dennis being "manager" over it. It was not a great time at Fender. Dennis in frustration and being PO'd about this build and other things, got his helicopter license as he was at his wits end. Thankfully Fender would go on to shake things up and Dennis stayed. But if you were to look at any pictures of the Tele's and compare them, the relic process is very different between the artists. VS Clapton's Blackie for example that were cloned exactly to the original. Each builder had the liberty to relic the Summer's Tele to their liking. You can see this if you compare a Todd Krause to a John Cruz to a Stephen Stern, etc. All are different. When Andy got the Tele it had its original tuners and its original chrome compensated bridge. Around the time when The Police formed Andy would go on to change the saddle setup on the compensated bridge from 3 to 6. He also installed the Schaller tuners and added an additional string tree. The biggest change he did was to the Tele's infamous bridge. Solid brass and saddles. He made this change in late January early February of 1979. It's first gig with the brass bridge was The Police performance at Hatfield Polytechnic. 21.2.79. This performance is on YT. Also, before the recording of Reggatta de Blanc. IMHO this changed and softened The Police sound and made songs like "Bring on the Night" what it is. It allowed Andy to lay his hand flat against the guitar and by removing the lip of a compensated bridge allowed him to play finger style more easily. The cloned Dakota Strats has boosters installed in them as did Andy's original 61. Now there is a switch on the back where Andy can use a guitar pick to adjust it. On his original Tele Andy has removed the phase switch and had the booster switch moved further back on the switch plate bracket. He last used the Tele in public in the late 90's. The Tele now sadly sits collecting dust at Andy's studio in Venice CA. However, Andy still uses and loves the 2 Dakota clone Strats and used both for his recent tour and with his Police cover band "Call The Police. It is also why the clone Tele did not get used as much as Fender had hoped during the reunion tour. Andy loved the cloned Strats more and the Tele got regulated to a few tunes. There are several great videos of Andy with Kevin Coyne with the Tele, pre-Police. You can see how it "was." I don’t see why. Everybody was doing that stuff to old Fenders back in the 70s because you could find them cheaper than new guitars. Aftermarket brass parts for Fenders and Gibsons were an especially popular thing in the 70s, there would be ads to send away for stuff like that in the backs of all the guitar magazines and even Rolling Stone. If this wasn’t Andy Summers’s guitar it would be just another vintage Tele that didn’t survive the 70s/80s to most collectors.

Having owned an Epiphone Les Paul Ultra II and a Gibson Les Paul studio I can assure you that indeed the difference is substantial both in quality and also in sound (although not as dramatic as it isn't that much more expensive).

what you are saying is absolutely true...fender tries to sell these "road worn" models for as much if not more than a standard version but try to sell a guitar store your DAMAGED goods and they will haggle with you all day. I know this for a fact, I brought in my '69 fender P-bass and the "ultra-cool" sales rep told me that the paint looked like it was done in a dusty room...love the analogy to the jeans.

im sure andy said in his biography that he had a problem with the original pickups - one or both of them had died - lost its magnetic charge - it was replaced by Seymour Duncan - still great sounding guitar - nearest i'll get is a cv custom squier

I am the same way. I think that the larger body of the Telecaster gives it more sustain and depth. It is also is more versatile. Even with less pickups. I still love to have my Strat around, but if I have to chose, it's the Telecaster all that way!

You nailed it. I did a relic job on one of my cheap Strats. Stupidest thing I ever did to a guitar. I ended up restoring the guitar nicely so I rectified that. But there's something wrong with paying top dollar for something worn out.

I'd love one of those without the simulated wear and tear or cracked bridge... I had a '62 Custom RI but with a rosewood fretboard and wish I'd never parted w/it. I modded it by putting in a 5-way strat selector switch and made it go out-of-phase via one of the settings rather than drill a hole in the faceplate for a switch.

I play Strats and have never particularly liked Telecasters, but a sunburst Tele Custom with the binding and the worn finish is one seriously handsome guitar. I had the chance to buy one many years ago, in 2-color sunburst which looked completely badass, but it was really beat up and way too expensive, even for 20 years ago.

Just the basic tone is totally different simply because of the age of the wood. That's why vintage guitars are so sought after, the tone, the sound. I bought a Gibson 61' reissue last year and it sounded fierce right out of the shipping box, but I know the more I play it and the ware and dings only add character and tonality that will make my Gibby sound fiercer and ultimately wicked!! I will probably get one of these guitars, if their still available, simply because I like the tone, even with

This just shows you, when Andy Summer, bought this guitar it was a stock Fender, but because it was used by Andy in Police then its a classic, and if you want one of these you have to pay mega buck at the Customshop, The moral of the story is you get a a great guitar if you buy a stock American guitar Tele or Strat

I don't know Fender stuff at all but Gibson LP Studios are lot cheaper than Standard and Customs etc and arguably sound as good. You can buy very good guitars for $500 but you have to know what to look for.

@racpa5 no these switches were a result of lots of players modding their guitars in the 70s. This is a left-over of that era and makes it even cooler that it has it's own character. This is basically the only guitar of it's kind. The closest thing Fender has now stock is the S-1 switching system, and that's more for pick-up combinations.

In his book I think I remember Andy saying he loved his Tele, but at some point he leaned it up against something like a boiler tank or something and it fucked up the pickups. He tried to have it fixed but it was never the same.

@paulstearne with respect, no luthier would ever put body cracks in guitars. finish cracks are debatable as some people think that even using a thick lacquered finish effects the tone of a well made instrument. hence brands like PRS not doing it. I wasnt talking about minor scratches if you reread my post im pretty sure i made that clear. Some people believe that electric guitar bodies have no effect on the tone and function of the thing....

Mine has the usual single coil and the a emg humbucker in the stall, the stall is black and pickguard black also the volume button plate aswell the buttons are black. the guitar is Purple/blue and have got black stripes instead of the white in this

Oh ok...I might not know as much as you do but I bet you don't have a collection like mine. 2 Strats(1954 & 1960 custom shop relics) 1 Tele(1967 custom shop relic) 79 Gibson Les Paul standard, 1961 Gibson Les paul SG (custom shop) 1965Epiphone Casino (yes a real one),1990Rickenbacker 325 (Hamburg) Gibson J160E and a Gretsch Tennessean. I run them through either a 1960 VOX AC30 (30th Anniversary) or a 1965 blackface Fender Twin Reverb reissue....But as you said I don't know much about guitars

@jolliffeiscool depends what you play it through.. the more the distortion the less you'll feel the difference in the materials. however, the more expensive guitar should last longer til it fails mechanically.. buy what you can afford and worry about playing. btw, don't ever neglect your amp.. it's at least equally important for a good tone!

@paulstearne from talking with some very exclusive luthiers i know that very well made guitars are very strong but very sensitive to changes even subtle ones. My acoustic cracked from humidity changes (which i common on unfinished guitars) and it most defiantly lost alot of its "ring" you used to feel the whole guitar come alive and vibrate when you played it. Now it doesn't, although saying that it still sounds great.

The work that went into replicating the original is amazing. The price although very expensive is due to the fact that they had to source and copy everything the original had down to the last dent and scratch not to mention the electonics etc. I am curious though about the guy who sold it too andy, does he know of its fame?
