I love Patti's performance. But also, watch Peter Allen sing this song on Carson! He was an incredible showman - all the modulations and dazzle. It's kind of a schmaltzy song, but also beautifully constructed and complex. Patti gives it soul and drama and Peter Allen gave it great nuance and astounding emotion.

Peter Allen's passionate original is outstanding. Andy wasn't attempting to compete with Peter, but he loved this song and possessed the range and artistry to cover it in his own way.

Something about the songwriter singing their own songs even if they do not sing well. Peter Allen, Leon Russell, Burt Bacharach... but Andy Williams can sing the phonebook and it will come out nice.
