Legend .Netherwood, Auldhouseburn and Crossflatt, the holy Trinity of Blackface breeding, and I guess Muirkirk also seems to be a bit of a Bermuda triangle for producing and holding great characters with a great sense of humour. What a gentleman , you can tell from those hands that he has seen and lived through hard times and I'd bet the only time he wheeled an empty wheel barrow was when it was new.

Great podcast, really interesting and lots of laughs, as well as the serious side of farming. Loved your comments on Muirkirk folk, they are very special people. My Mum hails from Muirkirk and grandparents lived there for most of their lives. I have the best memories of most of my school holidays and Christmases spent there. I made many friends and loved all the time I spent there. It was great to recall the names of the various farms that we walked past and through many times.

Know Andy, from my time working for R.G. Angus of Ladykirk Estate. I done fencing up at muirkirk away back in the 80s. Me and another guy done a fence up the back of Linburn farm in 1987 and a good stretch of it is still standing. Andy’s Farm was always mega tidy that was the first thing I noticed. Great guy. Best advice for depression I've seen on screen, almost word for word with the advice i try and give others and i had a big dose of it before it got fashionable!?! It never got fashionable, I'm being facetious but awareness is far better now. There's a triggering point in everybody, its different for us all and it can be the strangest of things, mine was battling fraud within renewables and banks when folk were abusing their positions for self gain who, when confronted, tried to ruin me! Human parasites are far worse than real parasites especially if they wear a suit and think thy can manipulate things but not all suits are parasites! I was spread too thin at the time and that was the straw that broke the camals back, in agriculture its so easy to find ourselves spread too thin with modern day pressures through no fault of the individual but we expect folk to be honest at the end of the day as that's what most people in agriculture are but that's changing too.Dinae knock it until ye try out for yerself but don't go there willingly as it can be the most debilitating thing that you'll EVER be faced with! I go out of my way to try and help others locally and as Andy says talking to the right person or people is a great thing but wanting to be helped is a must, theres nothing more infuriating than someone staring the issues in the face, having their issues effect other people, being offered help in their situation and pretending its not happening! I tried to help a guy out who was obviously struggling, i was completely beat with him and eventually advised him to get help, he came to my door and told me he had been to the doctor and got pills "great now your next target has to be getting off them as theyre only a steadying factor until you get yourself sorted out, bit like a sticking plaster!" He looked at me as if it was me who was daft, some people you just cant help and they are carriers of the disease! If someone had come to me and said "Are you OK" at the right time I'd have thought I'd won a gold watch but it never happened then, I'm glad to say with awareness it would happen now. There's life thereafter, different maybe, but its what you make of it! I quote lines from Dougie McLean's Caledonia as often as i can, " lost some friends i needed losing, made others on the way!" A fair few people distanced themselves from me but i got support from people i never thought would ever bother with me and its amazing how some of my worst critics have had a wee set back or two since and have found out first hand what living with the "black dog" is like! Keep the awareness going, ive lost too many friends and relations to the scurge of depression, i was lucky, i came out the other side, dented, bashed, bruised and tainted but many dont! Were all guity of bottling things up but awareness has helped folk realise they're not alone but when your down that hole you think you are very alone! A friend said to me after my debacle "what have you got to be depressed about?" I never spoke to him for 4 years after that until he found out for himself, we're back on track now but there's many former so called friends i just cant be annoyed with now. Its easy to judge and the judges dont always get it right but dont judge if you cant put yourself in the ring! I was asked to do a bit of counselling when i was getting some myself but declined as for as much as could help the genuine people i could put others the wrong way, any fool can tell you what you want to hear, not everybody tells you what you need to hear and hearing is very different to listening! Theres often only one chance at this and awareness is certainly helping people perhaps being prepared for it but if ever there's a case of prevention being better than cure this is the one! Mental health in the NHS is woefully short of where it has to be and it is bogged down by people looking for a crutch to lean on so they can remain on the benefit system! With awareness there's other help out there that is far quicker and effective, depression, in my opinion, needs hit hard at the right time once its at the critical stage, prevention is better than reaching that stage. I wouldnt have put this in print if i hadnt heard Andy speak so openly and frankly about his particular experience, every word rang a chord! Been on the wrong side of the law many times for being correct and was told by a Sheriff back in 1986 "unfortunately although morally correct in this instance Mr Freguson, you are legally wrong, i fine you £250!" That statement has followed me all my life! I got fined £1200 for ensuring the above person i was trying to help was clearly hearing what Ihad to say about him abusing my trust, my generosity and my farm by having him by the throat so he understood the depth of feeling only for him to have been recording it and then running to Plod! Plod sent out 4 of their finest the next day with blue lights ablaze, not one of them fit to deal with the situation had i not calmed down considerably whereby not so long ago the local Bobbie would have phoned and requested I visit the station for a reprimand as he would have known the background. Some peope you just cant help and with modern practices nae wonder folk go a wee bit daft!?! Daft is everywhere nowadays, legislation and the folk administering it are like the logic and the orderly's in One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest!
