"Well, these drifter days have passed me now, I've got so much more to think about. Deadlines and commitments, what to leave in, what to leave out..I'm older now, but I'm still running against the wind". That's true Americana poetry right there. Segers voice and songwriting soothes the soul. S tier for me.💖

My dad was driving me to work one Saturday many many years ago and this came on the radio. Dad generally had no use for my music but he got choked up and asked me who was singing. He was the strong silent type so to talk with me about a song was an epic moment. He said he really liked it. Lost him three years ago tonight. Perfect song choice guys! Beautiful memories.

Back in the mid-80's I was Alex and Andy's age and I went to college at FIT in Melbourne, FL. I remember a night driving from my home near Boston back to school in Melbourne by myself and it was about 3am or so as I drove down I-95 south through South Carolina. I felt like I was the only person on the highway. It was dark. And then "Main Street" by Bob Seger started playing on the radio. It was a bit haunting, but also uplifting. It made me feel sort of homesick even though I was home less than 24 hours earlier. Hard to explain, but I still remember that drive back to school almost 35 years later because of hearing that song that night.

Talk about nostalgia, I have a strange music related memory associated with Bob Segar. Growing up in Pinellas Country, Florida the very first concert I ever attended was Led Zeppelin playing at what was then called the Tampa Bay Stadium June 3, 1977. Two songs in the skies opened up with a typical Florida late afternoon thunderstorm. And instead of waiting it out the band left. Not surprisingly, a riot broke out as angry fans rushed the stage after learning that the band was not returning to the stage, even though the rain had let up. I was 14 years old and attending the concert with a friend, whose older sister had agreed to take us. We were way back from the stage and left before the riot broke out. But the ensuing traffic jam meant we were in gridlock for a couple of hours as everyone tried to leave. Night Moves was a very popular album at that time and we listened to it on tape a couple of times over that night. This became such a strong memory that ever time I hear Bob Segar it takes me back to that car in the traffic jam trying to get home from the rained out Zeppelin concert. We didn’t even know about the riot until we got home and learned that our parents had been in a panic about the news. Zeppelin subsequently took out a two page newspaper apologizing to their fans. My second concert was considerably better, as it was Peter Frampton September 4 of the same year in Orlando, Florida, on tour after the release of his Comes Alive album. This was one of those all day rock bowls, and included Kansas, J. Geils Band and Rick Derringer. But Frampton was the headliner, and he was fantastic!

@@user-nb2xs3ss1g I no longer live there. But it amazes me how strong of a memory this is. I just have to hear Night Moves and I’m back there. Zeppelin songs don’t make me think of that concert the way Bob Segar does. Minds are a funny thing. And music is almost more of a trigger as scents are for me.

Stood there boldly Sweatin', in the sun Felt like a million Felt like number one The height of summer I'd never felt that strong Like a rock I was eighteen Didn't have a care Working for peanuts Not a dime to spare But I was lean and Solid everywhere Like a rock My hands were steady My eyes were clear and bright My walk had purpose My steps were quick and light And I held firmly To what I felt was right Like a rock Like a rock, I was strong as I could be Like a rock, nothin', ever got to me Like a rock, I was something to see Like a rock And I stood arrow straight Unencumbered by the weight Of all these hustlers and their schemes I stood proud, I stood tall High above it all I still believed in my dreams Twenty years now Where they go? Twenty years I don't know I sit and I wonder sometimes Where they've gone And sometimes late at night When I'm bathed in the firelight The moon comes callin', a ghostly white And I recall I recall Like a rock, standin', arrow straight Like a rock, chargin', from the gate Like a rock, carryin', the weight Like a rock Like a rock, the sun upon my skin Like a rock, hard against the wind Like a rock, I see myself again Like a rock Oh like a rock

My personal view: when you are young, you run against the wind, you have fight and fire , and you want to take on any resistance. You fight with purpose to battle through ' the wind' . When you get older , you run against the wind, everything you do and want is a struggle , nothing comes cheap, easy or free. Life is lived daily against ' the wind' . On a side note I can just imagine the Silver Bullet Band hearing Bob break out "Let the cowboys ride !!" and them looking at each other questioning where that came from ... then just accepting, its Bob, let him go with it lol.

This was on the radio when I was in high school and I went out and bought the record like I had bought his other ones. And it's so interesting because as a teen, all of this resonated with me so much. But it wasn't until I got older that I realized how much more there was to this song. And one thing I like about the outro is that it just keeps saying, Watch the young man ride. Watch the young man ride. It just drills it into your head, and then suddenly he shifts to, Let the cowboy ride, Let the cowboys ride. It emphasizes that shift from youth into adulthood. And one thing you didn't comment on was that at some point in the middle of the song, it's not running against the wind; he keeps emphasizing taking shelter from the wind. It's a great transition.

I love Bob Seger, his voice. his singers, his band. He paints such vivid pictures with his lyrics backed up by harmonies that really make them sink into your psyche, listening to his songs is like watching a movie unfolding. This is an A+ song for me and I would give it S if I know he has even better songs than this one. Great reaction, thank you.

The session guys at Muscle Shoals were a big part of Bob's "sound". I believe they played on his most successful albums.

I like how you recognize that "Against the wind" changes throughout the song, from an exciting challenge and youthful adventure to an old man trying to keep up.

That voice and those words describe a Bob Segar song. Out of all his hit songs this is my all time favorite. We all challenge the wind in our Iives.

Against the Wind won the poll over Her Strut and I like both songs. Her Strut is a 100% banger and has what has to be the most humorous double entendre ever in a song in the chorus. A bit politically incorrect in 2021 perhaps, but incredibly clever nontheless.

This song came out just as I was going through a failing relationship. It became my theme song in 1980 for awhile, and may have even helped to deal with the Hell. It will always be a big part of me. Let the music play.

My Mom fell in love with this song the first time I played it for her. She was 51 at the time and I was 16, in 1981. We got home and she had me play the tape over and over, just so she could teach herself the song on piano.

I first bought Bob Seger's Night Moves when I was 13 years old and Against The Wind when I was 17. Loved those albums, especially the upbeat songs. Now that I'm an old goat of 58, I still love those albums but now the songs that reflect on years gone by are the ones that really grab me by the heart. Hey Alex and Andy, I love your enthusiasm for classic rock, awesome job guys.

Adding the guitar to the piano solo was an idea that Bob's great friend Glenn Frey came up with, aswell as singing backing vocals at the end there. Absolutely timeless song. You will never tire of listening to anything written by Bob Seger.
