A song that relates well to today's music, even though it was a slam against the disco scene back in the day. Also by the mid to late 70s there was a swelling backlash against the excesses of the many tangents that Rock had gone taken and to some extent those excesses only became worse during the 80s.

Every generation has their music hated by people who are 20 or more years older than them. It makes no sense whether we are talking about the 1920s, 1950s, the disco-dominated mid-to-late 70s, or today. Great music is made all the time. It always was, and always will be. Don't be that guy.

Little late on this reply but hey! I was stationed in Germany when disco had just started. I went over to the battalion, where all the men were housed (separate barracks back then), into the common room. Some new guy had just come in and came down with a disco album and put it on the stereo. Dead winter, I mean cold out. The guys picked the newbie up, took him up to the main door and tossed him out in the snow and threw his record on top of him, one being a country music fan. Then they locked him out. He wound up staying with a new guy in another battalion he shipped in with. He couldn't get back into the barracks until the next day.

Unrelated to this song. I had a weird dream this morning. Alex was driving me and my mom somewhere, while Grateful Dead’s “Friend of the Devil” was playing on the radio. Alex thought the cars on the road were going to slow, so he pulled off to speed along on the grass on the side of the road, which incidentally was at almost a 90-degree angle from the road! I was sure we were gonna roll down into the ditch, but we didn’t. HOWEVER…Alex was going so fast he ran into two mobsters, making them very angry (he may have hit their children, too - I can’t remember). At that point, my alarm woke me up. George Jackson was a songwriter for Muscle Shoals. He wrote this song and the Swampers made a demo for Bob, who often recorded in Muscle Shoals. He tried the song with his band and was not satisfied. One day at the studio a teenager and his mom and dad stopped by to visit the studio. The kid had his guitar and wanted to play. The owners were about to show him the door, but to humor him they let him play along with the demo. The owners liked it, Bob Seger liked it, so what was finally released was the original demo performed by the Swampers, and this boy. I believe his name was Howie McDonald. When the song went big, he tried to get studio work with little success. I think for many years he toured around with some musicians in an effort to parlay his "fame" from having played on a monster hit record.
@WhizzingFish122 жыл бұрын
The Muscle Shoals sound is the best! The Swampers AND the Tower of Power horns. He has some amazing early stuff you'll never hear on the radio. Total bangers...

Bob Seger "Beautiful Loser"...A MUST HEAR Classic..Truth!!

Thanks for making this song feel fresh again. It's one of those I never cared to hear again due to it being overplayed. But, one of your movies of the month should be "Risky Business", which helped to propel this song to super popularity in the early '80's.

This is an S-tier song because you can dance to it, listen to it on a road-trip, at a party, or on the porch sipping whiskey. Young or old, you’re grooving to this, no matter who or where you are.

He did a lot of great jammers. I don't recall which of his songs you've done, but Rock and Roll Never Forgets is another anthem similar to this one. My favorite more serious Bob Seger tunes are Night Moves, which I know you've done, and Against the Wind.

Every single wedding reception I’ve been to, the DJ has played this. And it gets people dancing.

I couldn't rate this song because I'm numb to it. It is easily the most overplayed song in rock history. I can't imagine anyone over 40 having not heard this song at least a hundred times. Even before it was in the movie Risky Business it got played over and over and over on rock radio. The lyrics made it very popular to use for many different purposes in different media. Then after Risky Business it blew up even more. It's a great song, no doubt, and I've played songs I like over and over dozens of times, but this is the only song I've heard scores of times not by choice. I never just want to play this song because I know I will hear it again soon enough anyway. As far as more Seger to listen to, you should do Mainstreet for sure as well as Katmandu and Still the Same.

Exactly and that doesn't mean it's bad just overplayed

For real. At a concert on Seger's final tour, I went to the bathroom during this song.

Yes, waaaay overplayed. Too bad… a good song.

Is "Old-Time Rock and Roll" overplayed? Yes, it is. Is it "easily the most overplayed song in rock history"? No, it isn't. I present to you Exhibit A -- "Stairway to Heaven", Exhibit B -- "Free Bird", Exhibit C -- "Bohemian Rhapsody", and Exhibit D -- "Hotel California".

Every wedding I've been to this song is one the first played, gets people out of their chairs. Look at juke box most played songs, this song is near the top. As for where Seger is vocally, agree with you and he is very underrated.

You’ve seriously never heard this song before??? How is that possible? Lol

Today, when you only listen to what you choose for yourself on Spotify or what is chosen for you based on an algorithm vs. hearing what is played randomly on the radio that you have no control over, you have no idea what you may be missing.

"Night Moves" is like a timeless work of art, hanging in The Louvre, that will be forever cherished. "Old Time Rock and Roll", is like a classic 1970's Playboy Centerfold from a magazine found in your dad's attic that is still in pristine condition. They're both great, but you can't really compare one against the other.

Every time a band plays this song live at any venue, everybody hits the dance floor. It’s one of the number one dance songs for classic rock ‘n’ roll.

Have you ever heard a song that you loved so much and heard so often, that you began to hate it.....just a little? I love Bob Seger, but this is one of those songs that got soooooooooooooooooo much airplay (and still does) that I just get a little tired of hearing it sometimes. Ok, now that I got that off my chest, good reaction guys! :)
@triscat2 жыл бұрын
Same. I mentioned, above, that there should be a special category for these songs. I've heard this one so many times that the moment I hear those piano chords, I immediately change the channel. Same with George Thorogood and even AC/DC, for me
