Back in 2014, when the BBC over in the UK launched a music channel they decided to use this song as part of their announcement, and as a way to feature all the different singers/genres you could find on the channel: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jqKvhZhunZVgoNE Hundreds, if not Thousands, of iconic songs from iconic British bands -- and they chose a song from an American group -- it really shows you just how powerful the song is. Even Paul McCartney has referred to it as his favorite song of all time, and going on to add: "“God Only Knows’ is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down. It was just too much to stand there singing this song that does my head in and to stand there singing it with Brian,”"

If you're interested in ground-breaking production values that paved the way for Brian Wilson, check out the psycho killer himself, Phil Spector. He worked with the Righteous Brothers, the Ronettes, Ike &Tina Tuner amongst others. He famously (or infamously) worked on a Beatles album and pulled a gun on the Ramones. Years later, he's now rotting in jail for murder.

They certainly were, along with the Everly Brothers at that time, influencing so many bands to come. It is difficult, and I give these two kids credit for trying, to get into the frame of mind and the culture that was the 60's & 70's, to appreciate this music.

From what I remember, Brian Wilson, the main writer for the band's most popular hits actually hated the beach. The one member that seemed to actually fit the lifestyle demonstrated by the themes in these songs was the drummer, Dennis, who actually drowned in a boating accident.

Brian Wilson wrote this and almost everything The Beach Boys recorded. Paul McCartney called it the “most perfect song yet written”, which made Brian despondent. He thought that if it were the most perfect song yet written he could never top it, and that would mean the rest of his career would be headed downhill. He went kind of nuts and gave up touring. Glenn Campbell took his place in the touring band.

Pet Sounds is an incredible album. It also inspired Sgt. Pepper, which in turn made Brian Wilson have a mental breakdown
@lukeizabelle21314 жыл бұрын
Well, not only that, also because of taking too much drugs like for example LSD, the pressure from both the public, critics and Capitol records, to release something really genius that would beat Pet Sounds and anything that the Beatles have done or were doing, his cousin Mike Love basically hating the music that he was doing for what would have become Smile album (which in the end obviously didn't happen, I mean it wasn't released at all) which has to do with the fact that Love didn't understand at all the groundbreaking music that Brian was doing and the fact that he feared it wouldn't sell that much as their previous hits etc. Brian Wilson had too many things that were against him unfortunately plus he was a very sensitive man. If only he had the same human and artistic support that the Beatles were having from each other and from George Martin, maybe there would have been some better chance for him to not have fallen from that infamous mental breakdown, such a shame
@vKarl74 жыл бұрын
Sgt Pepper didn’t make him have a mental breakdown. Always putting speed in his bowls that he smoked, coupled with the band not fully supporting his new masterpiece SMiLE and all the pressure he was under made him have a mental breakdown. He was already completely paranoid when Pepper came out; that just added insult to injury because he knew he could have beaten them had he finished SMiLE on time. It wasn’t the LSD, either, which he only ever took twice. IT WAS THE METH.

He, then, started to smoke pot when a few people were doing it, the LSD came later, but he was already emotional and mentally damaged. The recording of Smile was the deffinitive breaking point. He was so perfectionist about it that couldn't finished it... and here comes the multiple theories about Smile, if it was ready to be released, if it was just a collection of recorded sketches and so on

My first fave band along with Chuck Berry when I was a little little kid. That was many decades ago. This song was played at my wedding. Timeless. Check out the vocals only version floating around youtube. Pet Sounds vastly underrated album. BB vastly underrated as bubble gum pop.

Brian Wilson was so taken by RUBBER SOUL. He wanted a concept album to put America's most musically progressive group on par or even better. PET SOUNDS was his masterpiece. Paul McCartney loved this song .its a simple love song which was his forte so that makes perfect sense.. Brian says he wrote in like a half hour simple can be perfect

I've watched a few documentaries and interviews about this album, like the extra's off the DVD-A disc, and there's so much about the production of it that you will never know just by listening to the songs. I wonder what Brian Wilson could have accomplished by this time in his life if his father/manager hadn't insisted they only write catchy 2 minute pop songs early in their careers. Oh what could have been. But I'm glad for they gave us.

You've probably heard this a hundred times already, but it bears repeating. When Paul McCartney heard Pet Sounds that is what inspired him to drive his band to create Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. The Beach Boys are super underrated!

@@HamiltonRb True. I believe that once during a concert somewhere Brian and Paul sang the song together. There is a KZbin clip with the audio of this singing.

Brian Wilson pure genius. Carl Wilson sings this song. After his death they have him sing the song in concert and the rest play there instruments

I'd add "The Little Girl I Once Knew" and "Salt Lake City." Both brilliant, along with "Warmth of the Sun" and so many others.

It's crazy that rock from 50 years ago is still good. In the 70's we could only go back about 10 to 15 years and my teenage self thought those "oldies" sounded dated. My oh my how things have changed. Good is good no matter when it was made.

Just like great science, all great music stands on the shoulders of the giants that came before. I'm sure if we try hard enough, we could find also the giants from the 1950es and 40es and identify their legacies in later music. And continue all the way back as far as the memory of Humanity goes.

If you get to hear "The Pet Sounds Sessions" box set, Brian made a few mixes of God Only Knows. Near the end of one version (where music quiets and voices build up before fade), Brian took out all music and left the vocals a capella before the instrumental joins back to fade. With editing, there could be a great extended version of the song

This song holds special memories for me regarding our daughter. There’s a movie “Love and Mercy” that’s a biography of The Beach Boys. And Brian Wilson in particular. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, I recommend it

There are really no adequate words to describe how influential this band was. Legendary. Iconic. Classic. They created a timeless sound that will be listened to for ages. This is definitely one of their best songs. 🎶

Your appreciation and understanding is awesome, ... . Addictive and a great way to lift the flagging bones and spirits of me, and my fellow front line health crew in the frantic London hospital where we work., break times are spent watching you guys. From all of us Thank you., really really..... P. S, for a story in a song, Piano Man, Billy Joel is autobiographical. ✌️, brilliant and almost perfect.
