The exposure is not set automatically for the videos on the a33 (unless it's in auto mode). You cannot change it while recording but the camera will use whatever settings you set before pressing the video button. So you have full control over the exposure !

The Sony A33 speaker is awful. That was a shocker, their higher end models have very good mics. I have the A57 and I love the fact that I can pay half the price for Sony lenses because I don't need IS in the lens. For you aspiring film makers, Canon is the right choice because of not cropping in video mode, side battery access, and magic lantern hacks. You can automate lots of time lapse and focus effects where you'd have to manually do it with a Sony. I love my A57 but a T4i or 60D would be better for photo quality, just slightly. So that that from someone who's done it with both.

Thank you. Excellent review. I will have to shoot tango dancers in quite low level conditions. Do you think the A33 could follow these dancers without jumping from one couple to another. I tried with Canon but it is almost impossible to keep focus.

@Skapo14 жыл бұрын
@Andyax A couple things that you forgot to take into consideration. In 60P rolling shutter becomes almost a non issue. That is 720P, but for web videos that won't make a difference. I use the T2i for filming Skateboarding and motocross with little RS. Also, the video quality is not equal. Take note than in all the A33 shots, it flattens the difference between darker and lighter shades. As a film maker, it would be a struggle to not be able to sharpen the difference between shadow and light.

His last comment about number of lense options did not consider that the Sony camera takes all the superb Minolta, and related after-market lenses for minolta camera, that were produced prior to Minolta selling out to Sony. He said Canon has been in the camera business longer and thus has more lenses to chose from. Fabulous review. Really let's you be able to consider the camera that meets your need.

Nice video, A few weeks ago I bought the Canon 550D, partly through your videos on this camera, and I am very happy. Since I am a musician and not have problems to put music in my videos, it was important to be able to shoot good footage. After this comparison video i'm still very happy with the canon 550D. Manual focus for me is really necessary if you want full control over your videos. Therefore, the 550D better already.

If you can learn to live with a few limitations, the A33 is an extremely powerful filmmaking tool (in the hands of right people). The T2i is better in many respects but has serious issues with usability and speed. Canon should stop gloating and unleash more power in their entry-level cameras. And for all those nagging about A33's manual control in video, the A33/55 DOES have it! I will soon post a video tutorial on how to take full control of the A33 and create some compelling footage.

I am not a dSLR owner yet, but since the 550D has no autofocus, you have to constantly adjust the lens manually for focusing, correct? I am looking to get a video capable SLR but starting out I'd have a lot of problems w/out an autofocus during video.
@Skapo14 жыл бұрын
@swisstristan2000 I will tell you straight up that if you are trying to use the camera for film making then go with the 550D. The D3100 is no where near as well suited for shooting video. The 60P option alone is very well worth going canon.

@a1mint I think like the video states, it depends what you are using the camera for. The 550D for me wins hands down due to manual control over the image, auto exposure is a huge no no for taking video. Auto focus also is not a problem as anyone serious about filmmaking wouldn't use an autofocus anyway. Don't get me wrong,I'm sure the Sony is brilliant for casual use and image stabilisation is sorely missed on the Canon, but if you want to make films, get the 550D.

@a1mint I was talking out of these two cameras. As for talking about autofocus with kids and pets, like I said, that's not what I'd use this camera for really. I don't understand how you can say only I would like it? I mean it's universally praised as a brilliant camera for the price, and for movie mode it's exceptional. BTW I have used it, so I'm not 'imagining' this. The 550D with the right lenses is an immense piece of kit.

Owner of this video didn't spend much time with A33 obviously. You don't have to Lock the exposure by holding down the AEL button. You can change the settings from toggle to pushON/pushOFF it is in the menu. Also you can stop auto-focusing by a switch on the lens, or temporarily lock auto-focus by preview button under the lens. So you can do the out-of-focus exiting scene. I'm not even mentioning that you can switch manual focus at all :) Also you can change every option about video.

The background noises while capturing sound really bad. They are much more annoying than the hearable AF, I think. I do want this camera, but that loud and disturbing static noise keeps me away from buying the A33. What's the sense of gorgeous Full HD filming when the audio quality is that bad? I currently have a Panasonic TZ-7, compact camera, and its audio track is free of any background noise...

@MrLTFilms If you've been doing professional cinematic filming for any length of time and have done your reading, then any "auto" feature should be turned off anyhow as much as possible. Buy a follow focus kit and use that with the manual focus on the lense. It's not that big of a deal and is in no way a deal breaker. It's just like the video said, although the autofocus is nice, it depletes the quality of the picture.
@unir0013 жыл бұрын
I'm a Canon user for many years, but this «test» is a joke. I just tested both cameras (A55 Vs EOS 550D) and the Sony is far better in many aspect (pro like). Total control through the EVF: WB in °Kelvins w/wo bracketing, AdobeRGB, superb colour, in-body stabilization, HDR, 3D, extended flash feat. such as: High Speed Sync, Rear Curtain, Fill-in, Wireless, 10 fp/s.. So I don't want to switch because I don't want to sell all my lenses. But WOW, I will confirm that Sony is on top, now. Mitch
@editedbyfailure13 жыл бұрын
@BoxxyFan Now you also mention histograms. The 550D actually has a live histogram on the LCD when in live view. Saying it's for "amateur/beginners only" when the A33 has gimmicky autofocus is dead rich.

@BoxxyFan IS is built in on the Canon T2i and also it will last a lot longer because it doesn't use a 'like.no.other' SLT system. The SLT mirror will last about 2 and a half years at the most and cause your images to be grainy. I am not a huge Canon fan myself and am thinking of buying a Nikon over the t2i. Photography is my passion and I want my camera to last me a lot longer than 2 and a half years. Don't you?

@NightsirK Except 7 fp/sec VS 10 fp/sec, no noticable difference between A33 VS A55. @ nidschki, you have mini-jack for external microphones like a pro camera (of course not symetric but for that price...), so what is a problem? You can use dedicated microphones for video and plugin-it on top of camera using the flash grip. @ reddragon9918 well, the only difference is -1/3 of IL due to the translucent mirror, what else? The A33/A55 can feet every need, not problem of that.

@BoxxyFan 404 not found. Actual professionals (not idiots with DVCAM camcorders) who make movies use external LCD monitors. On shoulder mount cameras, there is no option but to use viewfinders (viewfinder attachments are available for the 550D) but if you're serious about DSLR video you will be using a rig of some sort with a follow focus, decent primes and external LCD.
