Navigator Les Paul Refinish (Part 2 of 2)

So, here is the second part of the Navigator Les Paul type oil finish.
Part1→kzbin.info/www/bejne/oGHQYXaVh7Jlh5I
The work I did was to apply more coats of oil finish and wax.
This guitar is a custom order, and there is no toggle switch near the neck, so the pickups are switched by a mini switch, so I had to come up with an original wiring scheme. I made a beautiful wiring scheme. It's not quite there yet.
I used SONIC cross wire for the wiring material.
It's the best cross wire that doesn't have solder on it. I don't know too many of them.
I was told to use flux and a sponge to remove the heat from the solder before pouring it on, so I've been trying that lately.
I heated the refret with solder as usual and pulled it out. I was still a little unsure if the fret grooves were Japanese fret standard grooves or inch standard fret grooves, so I filled them in and adjusted the grooves before fretting.
The fretboard is so tight that 0.04 of the Thicknesse gauge won't fit. The fretboard is as close to the fingerboard as possible.
It's very difficult to adjust the fretboard because it's very important for fretboard adjustment.
The fingerboard polish is like a jewel... I was happy to read in a comment that the frets are like jewels.
I didn't know about the nut replacement, but I wonder if the nut on a Les Paul from the 50's is the same size as an acoustic guitar.
I bought a regular Gibson size first, and the size didn't fit.
I was able to cut it out with an acoustic guitar nut size.
It's difficult to shape a Gibson type nut... I haven't done many of them, but it's basically difficult to determine how much to cut off because the strings don't have to touch the nut.
If you cut too much off the sides, it won't be beautiful or durable... If you don't cut it off, it will affect the feel of the guitar in your hands...
I don't like repairing guitars, but I'm risking my life to do it.
I hope you enjoy the video.

I'm a new subscriber, Thank You for sharing this, much appreciated. I've done this very same work to a couple of Les Paul Guitars, after watching this I'm glad to see this I'm on the right track with all of my processes/procedures. So satisfying to watch, I find myself getting lost in the satisfaction when actually doing the same work. Love the volute on this ESP, nice ribbon figuring in the mahogany body too.

Your attention to detail is amazing. Truly amazing for me to see a luthier take this much pride and time into doing this much work by hand. I've had nothing but bad experiences with luthiers in my area, so I have become my own... ...that said, after I watched this video, I think I need to go in the other room, neatly place all of my guitars in a pile, then light them on fire and start over. Great inspiration to do better work. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I did cringe a little in pain during your soldering but then I realized the paste allows you more time before the solder and components start to burn, cook and/or fry. Your work is fantastic. This is in no way a critique, but something I think you'll appreciate. When trying to have the cleanest wiring possible I use heat shrink on the ends of cloth wiring, this keeps it looking very clean in addition to preventing further fraying of the material. I haven't found a way to cut it that looking pleasing. I really appreciate your use of tubing over the leads on the tone caps, great idea.

Soldering in one of those things where there is a dozen "right" ways to do it. Your work looks great, and the only difference I see in what you do, to what I do, is the following. 1: I don't add solder to my iron. I use the iron to heat the joints, and place solder near the iron on the joint and let it flow to the heat. 2: For a great "stable" joint, Mechanical First, then solder. (Example, at 5:20, you soldered the wire onto the tab. I'd have looped through the tab, then soldered). btw: Props to you on using heatshrink there too! 3: I've never ever trusted the cladding on pots. I've always taken a small swipe at a pot with a file and soldered to the metal (which generally you use a bit more flux and heat to accomplish).
@Andybassguitar
@Andybassguitar 2 жыл бұрын
My ideal soldering is to not pour in as much solder as possible, because solder is resistance. However, the amount of solder is difficult to determine, because if there is not enough, the strength cannot be maintained.
@OpSic66
@OpSic66 2 жыл бұрын
@@Andybassguitar Right you are, Solder is resistance (depending upon the connection it could be less or more than the physical connection). Which is why a good mechanical connection is important. In a perfect world, we can rely on the mechanical connection, and solder to stabilize it, and prevent corrosion of the joint. 🙂

I am a luthier at heart, it is literally all I want to fill my every waking minute of time and days with is being around, playing, or working on instruments... of course my music, and being the creator of my own original music. But mostly want to be hand building strictly one-off custom guitars and or refurbishing other guitarist\bassist gems and of course acoustics too. I mean that's a given right.

@@Andybassguitar Thanks but it isn't. I was wondering because the one in your video has a convenient connectors orientation that I don't see anywhere else, and it seems to be good quality. I try to read the brand at 5:00 but I can't.

At 16:30 i do not understand why you didn't make the ends of the frets before they are seated on the fretboard.

This scene shows the removal of burrs from a fret side that was cut diagonally. I'm sorry, I didn't understand what you were saying.

@@Andybassguitar Yes, after removing the tung of the fret i would cut the length accurate and sand and polish the fretends to their final form and then i would hammer them in.

That way, there is a chance of scratching the hammer, and there is also a chance of misalignment of the sides when the frets are driven in. I think the way to do it is fine for each person. I've never heard of that method before.

You don't put solder on the frets, you just heat them with the iron.
