Awesome! It's my favorite Monk tune, too. I'm nowhere near being able to play jazz on my guitar, but this Monk standard, Herbie Hancock's Watermelon Man and Kenny Burrell's Chitlins con Carne will probably be my "gateway jazz drugs", so to speak.

For sure, those tunes are great tunes to get into the genre. You could then move onto jazz/blues like 'Things ain't what they used to be', ' Work Song', 'Soft Winds', 'Sonnymoon for two', 'C Jam blues' and 'Cool Blues' - so many great ones.

Andy, is there any reason to choose a three note chord vs a four note? Aside from what the player thinks sounds better?

The Root, Third, and Seventh are the most important notes of the chord. They define the chord + It’s also the movement between those notes from chord to chord that gives the chord changes their sound which is why we focus on that primarily

Personally I feel they are easier for most people to begin with. Unless you have a chord with a b5, the 5th doesn't bring too much in terms of influencing the chord quality. I'd see the hierarchy of tones as being 3,7,1,5. I often find that less is more in jazz chords, but the key for whether to use 3, 4, 2 or even 1 would be the context and how what you're playing supports and interacts with your fellow musicians.
