In this video I explain the 4 key stages of learning guitar. This video aims to shift the perspective of new guitarists who think you can learn in a linear 'level 1, level 2, 3 etc' beyond a beginner level & the pitfalls of doing so.
www.andyguitar.co.uk/online-le...
Even though I personally studied music academically to degree level, I feel that this along with the 'grading system' (grade 1, grade 2) is an inefficient & even ineffective way for most people to achieve & MAINTIAN a high level on guitar. More so, IT IS NOT the way that most of my musical heroes (Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Tommy Emanuel, The Darkness, John Mayer among many others) developed their skills
The 4 stages of successful long term guitar players is (in my opinion);
- Easy Songs
- Harder Songs
- Playing With Other Musicians
- Your Musical Outlet
Having filmed this video a few weeks back, I'd now add 1 other crucial 'stage'; learning to play 'by ear', which means developing the ability to copy music that you hear, and even to then improvise over it freely.
What do you think? Am I mad/ wrong/ spot on? LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS BELOW!

I’m currently at the stage where I can pick up a guitar and learn any simple/intermediate songs within a few days, been playing for about a year now and my progress has been noticeable, I’m currently learning Johnny B Goode on my fender telecaster, but 2 months ago I couldn’t even do basic power chords, it all just happens at once, you’ll wake up one morning and your suddenly playing a song that you previously could never play, it just takes patience and determination

Just wanted to jump in and say hi Andy! I have wanted to learn guitar for ... oooohhh... I don't know... maybe about 30+ years LOL but just never had either the time or drive or both. I'm a 52 year old single dad of a 5 year old, now, and was diagnosed with cancer when he was 3. Now, 2 years later, and after a year of treatment, look to have beaten the cancer, but there's one thing for sure - You never look at life quite the same after that. I live for my son. I"m all he has. It also made me realize, though, that I actually regret never taking the time to make an effort to actually learn to play. I just recently started following your lessons, about 2 weeks ago, and just started playing Something from Nothing - acoustic, from your video. Bouncing around them a little bit, but mostly following their progression. I want to tell you how much of a difference your lesson are making in my life, in just these short two weeks. You're helping me achieve something that I think part of me truly desired but l had given up on. I thank you. Sincerely. From my heart.

I also like Andy's videos :) just wanted to mention another couple resources you may want to check out (I'm not affiliated with either but I've found them personally very useful) - I use Yousician a LOT (and we have a great community too - Andy would be excellent if you popped by and joined up too! We have some excellent guitar teachers involved, look up Alexicutioner on KZbin, so you'd be an excellent addition to our community!) and also Rocksmith 2014. Good luck with your journey! Ryan

Andy, I love hearing especially acoustic guitar, and playing it, I have taken guitar lessons and couple of time periods in my life, but unfortunately both times I had financial problems, which I in result ended up having to quit. So I am so glad I found this solution. I really didn't want to have to quit in the first place.

Absoutley bang on about the Grades. I reached grade 4-5 by the time I left school. Didn't enjoy the process at all and felt no pleasure at all. Yeah I could play some nice pieces but not once did I get to do the music I wanted. Left it and joined the army. Now all these years later I continue to play and have benefited hugely by simply playing the guitar the way I want to and learning songs that I enjoy. I wish I'd done that YEARS ago.

You can tell how mature you are in this subject. You teach exceedingly well in my opinion. With stage 4, I feel a deep knowing that I’m on the guitar journey to just give love and be love, from an unconditional place to others. I have busking in my heart and also a picture of performing classical guitar to others too, when the time is right and the skills are cultivated 🤍 I’m patient and I’m in no rush. Just enjoying the process of having a new meaning to my life. It helps me see new cycles ahead for myself and not just reminiscing over the old ways of being. Sometimes we have to grow 🌱 I’ve noticed that music has a way of bringing people back to their authentic selves too. We always recognise music and it’s intrinsic vibrations and the memories and recollections we gain from its melody are so intense from relation we could almost relive that moment the melody notes back to us. Lyrics and melodies are such a deep and meaningful translation to raise to a new life when certain moments in time no longer resonate when unfolding that next chapter of our uniquely, magnificent book of life 🥰🎼

I think this is so true... I've been playing guitar about a year and a half. After my first 3 chords I learned I started writing songs... after 8 months I started going to open mics and playing with other musicians. About a year I started recording my own music. I definitely have a goal and I'm working towards that. I still consider myself a beginner but I'm very motivated to improve.

VERY USEFUL VIDEO TO ME! I've been singing in bands my whole life but never played Guitar or other instrument. (Always felt I got started too late in life) So I've always been at the mercy of what my bands are wanting to play. I kinda just filled the slot as their frontman, but I couldn't really contribute musically with them or on my own. This is why I've decided to learn Guitar. It's also a good time for me to learn as I'm out of work at the moment. I'm learning so that I not only can just play some songs, but will eventually have the ability to steer the direction of projects I'm involved in better, & be able to write my own songs when I'm inspired, on my own! Instead of ONLY when I'm inspired by others if the opportunity presents itself, which As We Know, doesn't happen as often as we'd like organically. Thanks Again!!!!!

It's made my expectations clearer of lots of things that drift through my mind. It's natural to start to wonder whether you are not experimenting enough or trying too much before you are ready. Wow, its now been a month that I finished beginner guitar lessons (4 introductory classes in 2 weeks) and I feel I'm at stage 2. Not bad as I approach 50. I probably spend 30 minutes to an hour (or more) each day out of sheer motivation and inspiration to learn and improve my skill. Much respect to other peeps who are progressing as well. I'm just fascinated with this supposedly new hobby of mine and how I've come along in a short time. Now excuse me while I leave my office for my lunch break and pull out my guitar to practice some more (wink).

You've hit every nail right on the head there. I have a fair bit slower progression than some, faster than others though, but I started around 18 months ago and learned more in the last few months than I did the frist 14. A lot of it is about understanding what we're doing. I have struggled finding a teacher, or affording one, so your video's are simply golden. I'd love to meet face to face, but I know that can't happen, nethertheless, these video's are an amazing learning tool. I think I'm somewhere around stage 1/2 ish, or jumping back and forth between them at the moment, stage 3 I am trying to get to, but due to health reasons, I'm unable to do. I'd like to meet others, learn with a mate thats also learning, etc...., but I'm very uncomfortable around new people and my mate thats also learning I don't get to see more than about 2-3 times a year or so. Expressing myself is one of the main goals I'm looking to get to, writing my own music and really bringing some emotion out of me through the guitar. I think I will really have a lot to give there when I get to that stage, I say 'when' rather than 'if', as I know sooner or later I WILL get there. Recording I already do, I have posted some stuff to sound cloud, have one (pretty poor quality) video on youtube, and have stuff only I have heard. Recording my practicing and playing has been about the biggest help for me as I can hear when I have gone wrong and do it again to correct it. I'd advise anyone to record themselves from the start, just for their own 'diary' of sorts, it really helps and most can do it easily on a free smart phone app, a voice recorder is included on many smart phones these days, so it's quite easy to do even if it's just for them to listen to to help them hear what they have played.

Andy, Excellent. I just walked a mile in sweltering heat on a Chicago morning listening to this video. Time well spent. I like the simple 4 step guitar journey. Strategic, not a bunch of techniques. After 8 1/2 months of playing guitar, I've solidly done steps 1 and 2. This week I am attending a 90 minute jam session at the oldest non-profit guitar school in Chicago: the Old Town School of Folk Music. Founded in 1957, they have weekly jam sessions that are free. That will take care of step 3. Just need to do it each week. I think I will make step 4 a goal at my 1 year mark of playing guitar. Thanks Andy. You recorded an actionable video for anyone committed to learning guitar. Best wishes from Chicago, IL. USA.

Wow, this is great. You are really something. Thanks for sharing . You are a great guitar mentor. 😍😍 You've really inspired and encourage me to learn and not to stop learning. I keep on going back to your previous videos, every time I go back to touching the guitar again. I am learning guitar easily because of your teaching style which I find easy for me to follow through.

Another great vid Andy, Being from Lancashire I'm more Android than iphone man, but seriously the recording was a great help because when I first played in front of someone I just crumbled big time with nerves also how quite difficult it is to sing & play at the same time or playing stood up as to being sat down as normal, but thanks to you & yer vid's on practical & theory thing's are improving slowly but ever so surely. Many thanks good man yerself. Kev.

Guitar is a performance skill. That is a key insight presented I learned. Play with others, recording video/audio of yourself, playing live, eventually writing or performing at events. After 6 months to a year of gaining an intermediate level by playing harder songs. Nevertheless, my key insight is that gaining the insight of a great guitar teacher like Andy is a great advantage combining with the tenacity or ambition to succeed at guitar.

I always wanted to be able to play fingerstyle but I feel like I had to first learn to play the basic chords and get the hang of normal guitar playing first. For a year I've just been playing guitar and even got an electric guitar but I kinda forgot why I started all of this. Playing became a bit dull for me and there wasn't a lot of progress anymore. You kinda reminded me that I shouldn't forget why I started this all, that way I can work towards my goal and I become more exited to play. One day I will play my own fingersyle verson of Hotel California! I just have to work for it ;)

This is great! I'm about 6 months in and i am very lucky that i have the pleasure of playing with some of my friends. My main goal is song writing, can you point me in the direction of what theory i should be learning along the way? Nice throw by the way :D

This coment was written 6 months after you picked up the guitar for the first time. My questions are: What were the excercices that you practiced In order to play with your friends, did you only learned how to read the tabs or you had to learn music theory? Do you have a KZbin Chanel where I can keep asking you things? I am starting to learn how to play guitar, By now (JULY2020) it had took me 3 months to be able to play G,C,D and E circles.
