Love the aggressive songs on the first album There's a Place and Twist and Shout. Paul McCartneys bass is also key to the Beatles sound. He was fantastic. Malapropism comes from a character in an novel 1775 Sheridan in which Mrs Malaprop would mistake words and use something similar to the correct on...to comic effect. if you have the Lp of Sgt Pepper.. When the player arm finishes the last song on the run out groove there is the line "never could be any other way" that just repeats ad infinitum if you have a manual non automatic return arm player.

Almost every Beatles album has a questionable inclusion: Run For Your Life, Yellow Submarine, When I'm 64, Honey Pie, Maxwell's Siver Hammer; but there's one exception, Hard Days Night. No covers, nothing you feel the need to skip over, just the Lennon & McCartney song mill operating at peak efficiency. Their one perfect album.

"When I'm 64" and "Honey Pie" are absolute highlights in my book, I love it when Paul does his Fred Astaire voice. Also, I always thought it was the biggest flex to follow "Within You Withou You" with "When I'm 64". Like, yeah, we'll make a beautiful CIM crossover and then we'll do a music hall/vaudeville/Irving Berlin-type song and let's include a trio of clarinets in the arrangement, while we're at it. I mean that's some serious variety. Which other band could have pulled that off as effortlessly as them?

They're my fav band. What l love about mysic is that aftr all the amazing musicians that came before them they arrive and create a new genre of brilliant music. I think their time in Hamburg is often lost as developing their ability to be so efficient in the studio. Even after they stopped touring and treated the studio like a fifth musician. A brilliant example of musicians not at the top of their craft as individuals that when combined leaped so far ahead of everyone around them. From my many years of reading about music they are by far the most cited band as the biggest influence by those that followed. U never get tired of listening to them. Their ability to do every genre of pop rock blues is unparalleled.

Sadly, Andy, you’ve missed the mark on a number of your ranking videos; however, you nailed it here, notwithstanding your reluctance to cite Abbey Road as the greatest Beatles album, indeed, the greatest (rock) album of all time, and, yes, “The Medley,” aka “The Long One” is the greatest piece of recorded music in popular music. I was pleasantly surprised that you ranked Magical Mystery Tour at number two. Based on the lineup of songs, a strong case can be made (as long as “Baby, You’re a Rich Man” is included), but the album does sound like a compilation more than a coherent artistic statement. I also agree with you that if “Hey, Jude” had been included on The White Album that it could have ranked as high as #2, but Abbey Road is secure as the top Beatles LP and the top rock LP of all time. Finally, I appreciated your slip of the tongue in confusing - briefly - The Beach Boys and the Pet Shop Boys. I’ll take the Pet Shop Boys over The Beach Boys eight days a week. You see what I did there? 😅

Well done. Very enjoyable. Although I mist say, Magical Mystery Tour was not a UK album until much later. It was originally a double EP. Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields were released before Peppers as a single and originally intended for the Peppers album. They are not truly part of Magical Mystery Tour. Also the Magical Mystery Tour album, even the UK version released in the 1970's, was put together by Capitol from copies of copies of tapes (unlike the German version, which sounds amazing). Ranking is often personal taste and for me (having been around when each album was first released) a lot depends on the impact on me and others around me at the time. For that reason, I would rank Revolver higher than Peppers (and Rain had been released from the Revolver sessions. Peppers while ground breaking was a logical extension of what came immediately before).

If my memory serves me correctly, back in February of 1963, when I was a senior in high school in South Bend, Indiana, one Saturday night when I got home a bit after 9 PM from working as a stock/bag boy in a grocery store, a DJ named Dick Biondi was on radio station WLS in Chicago. He played "Please Please Me" for the first time on any major radio station in the USA and I was hooked on the Beatles without knowing the first thing about them. Later on, after I'd graduated we moved back to Miami, FL and shortly thereafter (I finally turned 18 in November) I left my parents' home for Nashville, TN and soon I heard the album called Meet The Beatles was being released. I had a friend in the Music Dept. of the downtown store known for getting the albums first when released. I worked third shift and the day the shipment came in he called me at work so I could get to the store early and buy the first copy (which I did). I still have it along with all the rest of The Beatles albums. My favorite music still includes some classic 50s but mostly it's the 60s thru mid-80s. Long ago, I gave up trying to rank any facet of the genius that was the Fab Four. It's not worth the effort to try. However, I did really enjoy watching this video!

The first of a whole pile of additional posts.... In them days, the world was different in ways we cannot imagine First, you would play church halls and pubs, then when you started to make it you would do national tours on the variety circuit. A lot bands would fracture at this point due to the misreable existence of B&B living. The more talented members of a band could go onto be the backing musicians of name acts and finally shangri la, if you are good enough, you make a reliable, easy living being a session man for a record label or maybe the BBC. Some people went to Tin Pan Alley, Denmark St or the Brill building As you said, having a band that could do it all was a complete game changer, as it it made the bands a lot richer

Great video Andy. Great aesthetic presentation too. Of course Dylan raised the bar for everyone - I think Country was already present in the Beatles before their encounter with him. One of George’s biggest influences was Chet Atkins. Ringo too, was a huge Country fan. When space opens for George’s songwriting, so it does for the Country in his guitar playing. The slide playing on his solo work is second to none. He’s there before Keef latches on to Gram Parsons and Ry Cooder. I’d argue that it was George’s Country chops that was the glue for the TWs. I can’t see any other Beatle really gelling with the rest of that band the way that George did. How about a video on George Harrison’s contribution to Fusion/Prog? PS. George was also the preeminent ukulele player and George Formby aficionado in the band.

Interesting. And, I mostly agree. However, as much as I'm glad you gave some love to Magical Mystery Tour, it is NOT the 2nd best Beatles album :-) Drop that down to Rubber Soul territory and it's a sale.

I ping pong back and forth between Rubber Soul and Revolver being my favourite Beatles album. Specific songs imprinted themselves on me at a young age: Drive My Car, Got to Get You Into My Life, In My Life, Eleanor Rigby. Rubber Soul is currently winning. Drive My Car: "Beep beep mmm beep beep, yeah.." That's Teletubbies kinda stuff, very catchy to a small child. I also loved 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon at the same age, the rhyming was strong, so catchy, easy to sing along to when you're still learning to speak. Years later, the first time I heard what was to become my teenage theme song, Everyday is Halloween by Ministry the "bop be bop bop" part in particular resonated because it reminded me of The Beatles Drive My Car. I still occasionally break out with a beep beep... or bop be bop out of nowhere because I like the way it sounds, the way it rolls off the tongue or I just need a little groove. That's because of Rubber Soul. In My Life: To Sir with Love is one of my favourite films. I saw it quite young as well. When Pet Clark sings the theme to Sidney Poitier it hits me in the same way that In My Life does. Both have similar gravitas, both are short on length but long on wisdom and reflection. Poignant. Both songs smacked me straight in the face like an epiphany: BANG! light turned on somewhere deep inside my brain. It took me years to really understand the depth of feeling contained therein. In My Life makes me cry every time I hear it. So does To Sir with Love, actually so does Wish You Here by Floyd if I'm honest. I could listen to all three on repeat. I suppose I'm wired for gloom, In My Life brought that out first. Rubber Soul did that. Final thoughts: 1. I came to real music very early, it affected me profoundly, still does. When I get into music, I really get into it. I think there is likely some correlation between age, music appreciation and speech/sound cognition that I'm not knowledgeable enough to speak about. I can speak to the fact that the first two LPs I inherited were Twist and Shout by The Beatles (this was more or less a Canadian rehash of Please Please Me) and The Monkees by The Monkees. Both bands have made an indelible impact on so many things about me including my tastes, my sense of humour, my continued interest in all sorts of music. Younger people who aren't able to appreciate The Beatles seem to be missing something to me, a building block maybe? 2. Confabulation of the Beach Boys and PSB? It's a Sin.

Great video, Andy! Thanks for bringing up and explaining the whole Bernard Purdie thing; I read about this in an interview he did in Modern Drummer magazine back in the 80’s(?), and I remember getting very upset about the whole thing at the time……

Excellent list! Almost the same as mine. One bone of contention is you skipped right over “Something” which is George Harrison’s greatest song. Cheers!

Great as always, Andy! The greatest band of all time! You should have kept Magical mystery tour at number one! It just has their best masterpieces - Strawberry fields, I'm the walrus and Blue Jay way! They definitely invented prog! All the best and keep going!❤❤❤

Today, my top five are: Revolver Magical Mystery Tour Abbey Road Rubber Soul The White Album But it would be Magical Mystery Tour I’d take onto my desert island. Its diversity and its invention captivates me. Great vid, Andy.

Thank you for your wonderful ranking. Now please do a full video on "Tomorrow Never Knows". This is the song on Revolver (which is #1 on my ranking) that split the Universe wide open for me...

A Hard Days Night had ATTITUDE and possibly more impact when it was released than any of their other albums. Those rankings always dismiss their fiirst 5 albums. you at least gave it a wee bit of respect.

Well - I guess MMT always seemed like a compilation album. So I guess I never thought of it in the running for best album. But if I forget all that... not knowing that Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields had been released before Sgt Pepper... I think I would agree. I've always Loved MMT and especially I am the Walrus, and of course the pre-mentioned.. Just amazing.

Dude, how did you not discuss Helter Skelter?? Talk about unanticipated consequences! And it's pretty much considered foundational to heavy metal. A monster track!

My own list: (To be honest, the top 5 could probably rotate through, depending on the day of the week. 🙂) 1. Abbey Road 2. Sgt Pepper 3. Revolver. 4. Hard Days Night 5.Magical Mystery Tour 6. Rubber Soul [Hey Jude album - compilation of singles + B sides] 7. Help 8. Yellow Submarine 9. Please Please Me 10. White Album 11. Meet the Beatles 12. Beatles for Sale. I'd love to put the 'Ringo' album in here somewhere as well, which is practically a Beatles album - even the album cover is a 'parody'.

A very enjoyable ranking of their albums . I think that when you came into listening to the Beatles' music, plays a large part in how you would rank their albums . I was 10 years old when I saw them on the Ed Sullivan show in 1964 , so I was in on their music from the start . I love the early part of their catalog quite a bit , as that's what I grew up to as a kid . Here's a disclaimer before I give you my ranking : Growing up in Toronto , we actually had Canadian versions of the Beatles' Capitol records albums , that differed slightly from the US versions , usually by a track or two , which in themselves differed from the UK versions . All of my choices will be the UK versions unless otherwise noted . Anyway , here is my ranking. ( as of today , anyway ) , starting with my favourite : Rubber Soul. ( US version , which was at this point , the same as the Canadian version ) Abbey Road A Hard Day's Night White Album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Clubs Band Revolver Help ! Magical Mystery tour Let It Be With the Beatles Please Please Me Beatles For Sale Yellow Submarine Many thanks !

Great video Andy! 49:25 Makes me think of Ian the manager of Spinal Tap -- "Every movie in every cinema is about death -- death sells!"

Thing about Magical Mystery Tour was, when it came out, it played like a one-sided album, reason being that the singles that filled out side 2 had been played to death on the radio that year, great as they were and are.
