I was reading my old journal from 1991 today and since I wrote extensively about the Tokyo WC I had to come and relive some of the best and most memorable moments from that summer; this historic long jump competition and also the 100m run. Man, I will never forget watching these events live and it's been twenty five years this summer, wow, how time flies.

Dwight's commentary really complimented and made this competition so special. His reaction to Carl's 8.91 and Powell's 8.95 mimicked a true fans sentiments. IMO this is the best competition I have ever seen. Considering what a HUGE barrier this was and how both of these guys surpassed it is amazing. Lewis' series is just inhuman.

Indeed, I saw this when it was live here in The NL Always admired Lewis but Powell came and comes across as such a nice, positive and modest guy. That long jump contest was one of the most intense matches of any kind I ever saw. You just knew this was of a standard so high it will be difficult to reach ever again. And thart is surely because Carl Lewis was doing so incredibly well AND Powells jumps, while faulty, were really far as well. Something in the air...for almost 9 meters!

@SeanFHoward I think a lot of people were happy to see Mike Powell win this competition. I think they thought that Carl Lewis could be arrogant at times. Carl often spoke very highly of himself. I always respected him as an athlete though. Although he never broke the world record in the long jump, he did win the Olympic Gold in 1984, 1988, 1992, and 1996. I agree. That's why I just had to upload this video. Usually, when the networks show a field event coverage, they suck all of the excitement out of it. They show the winning jump or throw and the final miss/foul/short throw of the next closest competitor. Where's the excitement in that? It's like they're showing highlights on the news. Sometimes they even tell you that you're about to see the winning throw or jump! They don't cover the 1500 by telling you who's going to win beforehand.

It seems that everyone is forgetting our history. Jesse Owens' world record stood for 25 years. Given the advances in nutrition, equipment, facilities etc. Owens would be putting up 28 + jumps and maybe 29 foot jumps. Owens set three world records and tied a third in the space of one hour at the 1935 Big Ten meet.Give the man his due folks, he has to be one of the greatest of all time.

Two possibilities. 1. Although we only see the metric sign, there may have been a computer feed for journalists that also showed feet and inches. 2. He recorded his audio commentary after the competition was over and had plenty of time to make the conversion. Keep in mind that this competition aired late at night in the United States, about twelve hours after it took place in Tokyo. The editing makes me think that it was all done before the commentary was added. What do you think?
