They've been building through the draft, free agency and trades since James left. No one paid attention. It all started with Collin Sexton. Then the questioning as to why they drafted DG, traded for Allen, drafted Mobley, signed Markkanen, traded for LeVert, and then flipped players and picks for Mitchell. Which is weird because while in Utah, everyone was praising him and saying that him being a Knick would be a megastar move. The GM(and owner) has been patient, calculating and managed to get the core locked up. The moves he's made with undrafted players and offering nice contracts to role players has been elite as well. They have Emoni Bates developing his game and body in the G-league too. I mean, for giving up those first round picks, they still got Bates, Travers and Tyson late first and in the second. They went from 19 to 51 wins in 5 seasons. That's not by luck.

Koby Altman (GM) is seriously underrated and give props to executive management and ownership for believing in the vision and letting the guys cook on all levels. Altman has been in since 2017 (last LeBron season) and he was brought in with a vision and goals for the future of a team that would inevitably need to rebuild. Every single move has been positive and pushed the Cavs forward when available. And when the chips on the table were the best offer (like this past off season minus JB for Kenny) they have always just run it back. This is what it takes to build a winning culture and organization and the only way to thrive w a small market like CLE. The Cavaliers are a competent organization that has been incredible from a fan perspective and I want nothing but success for Altman and also props to Dan Gilbert as the owner for putting good people in good positions and believing in them. Complete opposite of the Browns and Haslam it is amazing. Also PS I've met Altman personally and he is very decent and intelligent and I have immense respect for what he's achieved as as GM in the NBA so far.

What people tend to forget about the Cavs last season is that even with Mitchell missing Game 5, Garland still struggling to find his form after the massive weight loss from his jaw injury, and Allen out for the series, they still made the Celtics work in every game and had the best overall series against them. The Pacers got dogwalked, the Heat got one win and then got obliterated in every other game, and the Mavs couldn’t slow the Celtics down at all, only winning the one game when the Celtics couldn’t hit any of their shots. Only in Game 1 and the last quarter of Game 5 did the Cavs actually look overmatched, even hurt as they were.
