Andy, thank you and well done on providing a clear, succinct, no waffle video which answered all my questions on installation, how the TB works and adding a bonus re the TB USB cable installation (which I wasn't aware of) allowing me to charge other 12V accessories in my tank bag. You mean the black wire? The ground? It’s possible i might have connected them to a point on the frame. One way or another, you need the ground to make the accessory work. But often you can ground on to the frame and that itself is connected to the negative terminal of the battery.

@AndyManCam4 жыл бұрын
You could connect the ignition wire (white one) and have a switch on that circuit. But that would then switch off everything connected to the TB. Otherwise a switch between the Spotlights and the connection to the TB would do the trick. Of course depending on the draw of your spotlights, you might want to think about putting a relay in there.

My laziness was the reason i got the Oxford grips. They were originally wired directly to the battery but automatically switched off with the bike.
@mattmutane55024 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam My laziness is why the loom is installed (direct to the battery) but the grips are not (will do that VERY soon). I've got the "official" Yamaha grips which auto-detect the bike switching off and turn themselves off, but I like this better, "enforced shutdown"! ;) :) I don't think it's advisable to splice a heating element into an ignition circuit, which wasn't designed to take that kind of current...(which is why they are designed to connect direct to the battery) :)

Good overview, just wanted to confirm something. So I assume the thunderbox "knows" the engine is running because it detects the higher 13+volts from the bike's charging system. So in order to plug in a battery tender, the only way to prevent the thunderbox mistakenly thinking the bike is running, you have to dig out the thunder box, dig out the white wire every time and then connect it to the black? If that's the case I assume connecting the white wire to an ACC power might prevent all that, but then you'd loose the "only while engine is running" function. hmmm Also connecting the permanent lead plug for the battery tender would still require attaching directly to the battery, in addition to the thunder box yeah?
@AndyManCam7 ай бұрын
I’m afraid i didn’t delve into that too much as i never had power in the garage. But i did eventually end up connecting the white wire anyway, as it allowed me to keep power to the USB sockets even when the bike was off.

I didn’t, but i did have a problem whereby my Daytona heated grips would switch off whenever i stopped at the lights and the bike was ticking over. Healtech told me that it was because mine was the first batch and it was fixed with firmware on all after that. When i eventually did switch to oxford grips, i connected straight to the battery, as the intelligent controller always worked well for me before so i didn’t see the need to double up on the protection. Then the grips proceeded to kill the battery the first time i parked the bike 🤦🏻♂️ After that they never worked properly again and now i have factory fitted KTM grips on the 1090 that i replaced the Honda with.

Hi Andy Very good video and this is a great system. Please be clear though that you CANNOT connect a smart charger directly to the thunderbox

Thanks Andy, looks so easy to install. My battery looks exactly the same ... so many wires to the battery terminals. I've just bought one from your link and it's a very good price. Top man👍

Hi Andy from northern Ontario Canada, this is just what I have been looking for on my 2019 Suzuki v-strom 650. I need to and some extra lights for night rides into work. Now just need to find where to get it and how much in Canada. Great install video. Cheers

Hi, great vid, I have an oxford solar trickle charger wired directly to the battery that lives in my oxford bike cover, can this still be connected in conjunction with the Thunderbox, or do I need to take the white wire directly into the black rail to cancel any power to it? Thanks.

I’m afraid I’m not sure. Maybe try giving Healtech an email. They’re usually very helpful and knowledgeable.

Interesting, I have a Innov powerhub (V1) on my FZ1 it needs a switched live which I connected to the number plate light using a posi-lock. It has a 5-10 second delay so even if the ignition's on you can use full battery power to crank the bike. I'm surprised it took this long for a company to bring out one of these without the need of a switched live considering heated grips and other accessories which can detect a bike not running existing for a while now. BTW if you use an SAE tender cable you can use Optimate's USB adapter which auto shuts off if the battery hits 12.5V without any ignition being on (SAE cable is connected direct to the battery)

I agree. The need for this and the capability has been staring is in the face for years! At least it’s here finally!

I was going to mess around with relays and stuff but might just get this, much easier. I assume you can still connect battery charging cables directly to the battery?
@AndyManCam4 жыл бұрын
It’s astonishingly easy! You can. That’s the idea behind the shutoff with the white wire. So when charging, the accessories stay switched off.
@easternmenace4 жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam So every time you wanted to charge the battery you would have to connect the white cable to the black terminal block if I understood that correctly?
@AndyManCam4 жыл бұрын
Depends really. You could charge the battery fine i think, because the engine wouldn’t be running anyway. I guess this is just a further safeguard against the accessories powering on. But even that wouldn’t really be any different to charging the battery without the Thunderbox.

If it works anything like the smart power switch I have on my bike cam that uses voltage detection to turn on, when the optimate charger is connected it turns the camera on so I have many hours of footage of the garage over winter when I forgot to disconnect the power to it.

Excellent video review. Looks like a good piece of kit. I think I will have to invest in one for the bike, it a very neat solution. Cheers

Hi Andy, can the TB-USB1 be connected directly to the battery without draining it or does it have to go through the thunderbox? Thanks
@AndyManCam3 жыл бұрын
It can be connected directly to the battery, but by it's nature it will constantly sap a tiny amount of power from the battery. Better to go through the thunderbox to be safe.

Hi Andy, love your channel. As a new rider I just got myself a Triumph Tiger 900 Rally Pro. Been thinking about how I could hook up my gps and the Scottoiler to the battery without interfering with any original cables. When I stumbled over this video I knew I had to get the Thunderbox. Waiting on my TB-U02, which is a nightmare to get. Hope it arrives in the following week. Now to my question. Do you know if the Thunderbox still works when using a Connector, like a Ctek Comfort connector as a possibility to switch between using the thunderbox an hooking the battery up to a charger… Thanks.

Thanks very much! Happy to help! I do remember something about being able to use it with a charger. You just have to do something with the white cable to make it work properly. I’m pretty sure you can download the manual from the website and take a peek at what the score is. But ultimately, yes.

Hey, great video. I was just wondering if you had a link or a name to the USB outlet you have mounted on the handle bars?

Hi again Andy. When you say the white wire can be connected to the black wire to bypass the Thunderbox, why is that good when charging a battery. Do you know if it causes any issues if we forget the white wire completely and charge the battery with the TB in standard auto mode?

I have 6 cables coming from my VFR800F battery, 3 positive etc. 1. CTECK charger, 2. Bering heated jacket 3. Rock Creek pump. All different end connectors!!. Would I be wise to purchase one of these boxes? The wiring under my seat is not too messy. Would it be overkill?
@AndyManCam4 жыл бұрын
Not at all! I love the tidiness this thing gives me. The battery is unbothered, plus the extra overload protection is a plus and knowing that nothing can drain the battery while the bike is parked is also a bonus.

How does the unit decide if to ` blow a fuse` . Basically how does it decide if 3a or 15 a is too much ?
@AndyManCam Жыл бұрын
I’m afraid you’re getting above my pay grade the David. I would guestimate that it simply responds to any sudden spikes, way over the ‚normal‘ draw it’s been providing.
@davidshucksmith3342 Жыл бұрын
@@AndyManCam Thank you for reply. But, say, r the accessory is faulty when purchased, and the unit decides the amps is ' normal', so doesn't cut the circuit 🤔. That's the part I don't understand 🤔
