Really lovely piece. I like that the design isn't overly fussy and instead just highlights the natural beauty of the wood. The natural edge along with the bookmatch works perfectly. Amazing heirloom-quality table. Really no need to ask if we want the bench video... of course we do!

God's handiwork enhanced by God's given talent of Andy Rawls. Also Robert's presence and talent which you are honing really made such a sizable project possible. I love watching you work together, you seem to have formed a wonderful bond of master craftsman and attentive, helpful, imaginative student. Great team work, the belt sander segment was like a beautifully choreographed ballet. Of course we want to see the bench built, why would we not?! 😄

The bench looks like an easy build but a video of the build would be awesome too. I watch videos for the small ideas. Most times the small things make the big projects go so much easier so every build is a learning experience no matter how easy or hard.

LOL moment starting at 18:10. Concerns about burnishing/ marking/marking finish then steps on table feet with work boots to hold stable. Not being a hater here - recognizing the times I have done this very thing. Cracked me up. All humor aside, that table moves me. It is a stunner. I am a Texas boy living in Washington State and pecan wood is such a rarity. Have never seen it for sale in 20+ years of living here. High figure Big leaf maple? I have stacks of 4” slabs up to 52” wide. Old growth straight clear grain douglas fir? Got plenty. Black walnut? No problem. Alaskan yellow cedar? Stickered in the shed loft. Pecan? Ha! Dream on.

Beautiful table. Looks like you're riding the line between holding on to your brand and quality and teaching your apprentice. Something I've learned from those wiser than me: 'if you're doin, you ain't teachin'. If you've got the tool in your hand, then his hands aren't learning how to use it.
@dragonstonegemironworkscra47402 жыл бұрын
True to an extent. For me watching the process as done by the teacher is invaluable. Oft it takes watching multiple times to soak in the basics of function then the reactions of the material worked, then the nueances of how the process is performing. In my wragged mind, if I get told do THIS in this way, then I try and apply the theory without basis for the actual how it's difficult. At the point when the teacher says no your doing it wrong my mind goes zzziiitttt. In contrast if I wave watched rewatched and again, well when the teacher says your doing it wrong, do THIS in this way... I grasp the education easily. Blessings aboundant Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️

I built a live edge maple dining table for my house, I used ratchet straps for my glue up. Worked well.
@dragonstonegemironworkscra47402 жыл бұрын
Interesting concept. I've used ratchet straps for many things. But I must say I've never considered it for this application. Considering the pull, one would want to reverse every other strap to get consistent "torque pressure" correct? Truely it's a community effort to learn all these different techniques! Knowledge is golden IMHO. The greater the options in hand the greater the chances of success! Blessings aboundant Crawford out 🙏🔥⚒️🧙🏼♂️
@theweekendwarrior63552 жыл бұрын
@@dragonstonegemironworkscra4740 yes I reverse the ratchet side for each section, and then I used Caws to keep it flat. Also had to put a few pieces of plywood under the straps as when I tested it before glue up, I noticed it the metal started to dig into the bottom of the table.

I always use a handmade after the jointer, I have a little trick that would help slightly, if you own a scrub plane run 2 to 3 passes about 1/4" away from the edges, that serves two purposes, primary is that when you run your number 7 you're only contacting the mating surfaces which makes it so much easier to run the large iron through,,the second is that it creates a very shallow juice groove for the glue to sit in and allows the outer edges to come together so much tighter. If you don't own a scrub plane I would highly recommend the veritas scrub plane with a pmv11 blade. Great work all around!

Attaching a taller fence extension and keeping pressure against the fence surface will give a a damned straight and 90 degree edge. Way too much work with the hand plane. But it’s a great skill to have. So is the ability to dig a deep trench with a pick and shovel. But I’d rather use a backhoe. Minwax Wood Hardener is what we use to harden punky wood like you were dealing with. It’s as thin as laquer thinner so it penetrates deep and hardens rock hard. That table turned out gorgeous!!

I like to plane it square like you’ve done then take a heavily cambered plane right down the middle a pass or two to give it a little scoop out. Just a hair of space for the glue and to ensure the edges press together.
@stallionranchwoodworks2 жыл бұрын
I've been shooting Mohawk Conversion Varnish for a few years now and I like it way better than CAB acrylic lacquers. If you want to stop the bubbles from appearing you need to add about 15% retarder/reducer to your mix, it will lay down that varnish nice and smooth and allow the gases to release easier without forming bubbles.
