He's actually a very good player, but being too one-footed and truggles to hold width makes him doesn't look right in this system.

7:43 - Other football channels haven't pointed out the flaws of Angeball and I'm glad you did, however, as stated, like Ferenc Puskás, Ange would rather win or lose 4-3 than 1-0. It's the mentality and the players have obviously bought into that. The morale change is clear and Dejan Kulusevski outright just said it in an interview recently as well. Tottenham vs West Ham will be an amazing match to watch tactically due to this clear counter attack play by West Ham that Angeball is prone to and the clear all out attack of Angeball vs 5 man block and 'zone-man' marking of West Ham.

Also in reality, Ange's tactics are nothing new, as similar tactics were used during Ange's playing days at South Melbourne under Ferenc Puskás, which Angeball is influenced by. Ange, who played as a wingback, hated it because, like Angeball, it demanded so much from the wingbacks under this type of system. I'll LOVE an analysis of Angeball vs Puskás and the similarities and differences, as the influence is clear. 50 year old tactics, yet still so effective in the modern day. - Also while every football channel is looking at the tactics, what is overlooked is his amazing man management and people skills, both to his players, but also the media. He has a clear distaste for the media and their often repetitive dumb questions (see being asked about Harry Kane recently), but never gets overly angry or dramatic like Conte or Mourinho, and often has quick jokes to lighten the mood while also being firm and shutting down their dumb questions when needed. Like Mourinho, Ange can deliberately take the media heat to protect his players when needed as well.

Seems you are very knowledgeable of angeball I've a question ofc he's a brilliant tactician but is he flexible enough to change his systems when eventually teams find out about his setup or is he as rigid as managers like kompany ( so far) and bielsa in that they set up their teams to relentlessly attack which makes them valunarable for other teams to exploit and punish them?. Their are tactical geniuses in the league like de zerbi, pep, arteta who will find solutions to sustain his tactics, can he adapt?. Thanks for the analysis too

@@user-jx8lf1jl1u Ange has shown it already. The players will counter and will use the long ball if the opportunity arises, for example, if the defensive line is too high, like the first goal vs Burnley. Son's pace is a clear advantage in this case.

I can sympathise with managers like Ange and Mourinho. These days it's not just the unoriginal sports-journo line of questioning, it's the rigorous media training forced on players and managers alike. Nobody is allowed to say anything controversial (on pain of significant fines), which makes interviews merely about "for the team", "most important are the 3 points" and "looking forward to the next game". I think we all miss players like Zlatan, who made a point of making interviews fun.

I’m not a tactician or even try to pretend so…. But the more I read or watch about this guys system I’m gobsmacked. He’s making it look so darn easy, yet it’s not at all. He’s a chess master and has got Spurs players absolutely ripping it up. Yes it’s only 4 games in…but imagine what they could be like once they perfect this…scarey. I do not think I’ve ever witnessed such a transformation in a team before. Simply put, I’ve seen teams become ultra defensive to stop the rot…but I’ve never seen an ultra defensive team become overnight so attacking and brave! Style, managers and players. A club that’s been ridiculed more than most…I do believe could be having quite the last laugh.

There was a question in r/coys about what are your expectations for this season & I answered "if we get the same amount of points from last season but with more interesting football to show, I won't mind." As a cautiously optimistic glass-half full Tottenham supporter, I'm very happy with the way things have gone. I like that you have pointed out many ways Tottenham can succeed from building from the back & just to add your point, Porro - a couple of times - was dispossed by Man Utd in the first half. But Postecoglou change it with widening the distance between - If I'm mistaken - the centerbacks & the inverted right fullback. So when Garnacho was covering a shorter distance to press in the first half, it's now longer. Sarr dropping back a couple of times to help also help. One thing that I'm curious but hopefully would not happen a lot is if one of Romero, Van de Ven or even Vicario absent. It already showed during the Fulham League Cup game & I believe we didn't have any shots on target in the first half. Postecoglou then switch to a 4-4-2 but on build-up, a 2-2-2-4 with Hojbjerg & Skipp dropping back closest to Sanchez & Van de Ven. Royal & Davies were closer to the front four of Perisic, Richarlison, Scarlett & Solomon then the two midfield players. We managed to push Fulham back with direct balls where we also managed to win the second balls - probably due to Royal & Davies contesting those balls then Hojbjerg & Skipp. It also makes sense that Hojbjerg & Skipp - probably two better ball-playing players then the two fullbacks - were closer the centerbacks so they can help with building up plays from the back better. Could this switch to 2-2-2-4 be an one off or something of a plan B from Postecoglou.

As an Australian I can tell you that Ange may have the team sheet as say 4-4-2 or even 4-3-3 but his plan is always to try and play 2-5-3. What this means is that once the side goes into attack he likes the left and righ fullbacks to come into the midfield thus, freeing up the left and right midfielders to move forward into attack. It is fantastic to watch but it is also fraught with some danger because if the oppposition team transitions very quickly it kind of leaves the two centre backs exposed. But he has been very successful on this model.

Spurs have a good chance at finishing in the top four. What this video showed is that Ange system is one that covers everything. Opposing teams so far simply cant keep up with the way the system changes. Son will play up top with Salmon on the wing. Also with Johnson signing he offers speed down the right. Having three front attackers with Speed and energy will be hard to deal with. As for the defence. Spurs will press high to win the ball back. Also notice if Spurs are being exposed in the wide areas too much the full backs will stay deeper when in attack. Sarr and Bissuma sometimes Maddison will go wide. The Ange system really does seem to cover everything.

You've summed it up pretty well I think. Been watching Ange's progress since he was here with Brisbane Roar but haven't tried to unpick his tactics much, he's too smart for me, it seems though that he gives the players enormous freedom to work it out in the moment while they all say that Ange is very clear in what he wants from each of them. I feel this is why, as you point out, it is all so fluid and difficult to for the other manager to counter because no matter how tactical they are Ange sets the strategy and his players are employing the tactics on the run. I think this is why they enjoy the game so much as well because the manager entrusts them and he will tweak it with the subs as the game unfolds. I might be misreading it completely but it is sure great to watch.

FMS, Great analysis. I am predicting Spurs to finish in top 5 this season, not champions😅. Ange is a top manager with a lot of international experience that has taken the best parts from Mr. van Gaal, Josep Guardiola, Juan Manuel Lillo, and Don Bielsa and applied them to his game model. Each appointment (Austrailia MNT, Yokohama F. Marino, and Celtic) he adapted his tactics to the skill level of the players at his disposal, but the game model and prinicples are the same. I see potential for Ange to exceed Pochettino’s accomplishments but there is the Chairman Daniel Levy factor which has been consistent the past 20+ years too😢.

As an arsenal fan i can say that ange's explosive styleof football is so beautiful to see, but not quite sustainable. I reckon the best finish in his tenure may be 3rd because they give up too many big chances. Some games you'll win by a large margin, others, you can be destroyed as well. I think that his style is quite erratic and very reminiscent of jesse Marsch's or hansi flick's style of football. I expect spurs to struggle especially against teams like liverpool, west ham, brentford, arsenal. Even when they won against man utd, the 1st 45 was quite indicative of the downside of ange ball that I am speaking about. There average shots against them in the premier league has also been 15 as well. Really high risk football and indicative of the lack of control in almost all their games thus far

I know that Anges teams get better as they better understand the system. So they're going to finish above 8. I would put money on top 5 this year, higher next year. But I am curious to see how the defence holds up when you have other teams who are great at the counter such as Liverpool with players like Alexander Arnold who can make a very accurate long pass to a deadly finisher like Salah or Man City. And has played Man City under Pep before and his Japanese club side managed to out stat them, even if they're finishing quality didn't get them the win.

But as I've pointed out on numerous posts Ange learnt from Ferenc Puskás. Google him if you haven't heard of him. Puskás' strategy was to outscore the opposition. You score 1, I'll score 2. You score 3, I'll score 4. Conceding goals is not as critical as scoring them, as long as you're on the right side of the profit/loss equation.

I'm glad you pointed out the biggest flaw in this attacking plan, the gaping holes on the wings left by the advancing fullbacks. Ange ball was successful with Celtic in the Scottish league, but they were found out in the UCL. The big tests are around the corner, Arsenal away and Liverpool at home this month, and then City in Dec, teams who know how to exploit space. Even the matches against Brighton, Newcastle and Hammers will be tough ones. If we come out of those matches with commendable results I'd say we're in for a special season.

there's a gulf in class between Celtic players and Premier League players. Celtic didn't get beaten because of their tactics, but because they faced world class players who would walk into any team.

Although Spurs have been brilliant but they still haven't faced a tactical manager like pep, Klopp, arteta, emery, de zerbi who can expose this flaw & dent the confidence of the Spurs players. Imagine the likes of mitoma, Saka, Diaz, Salah, grealish, martinelli, diaby getting so much room on the wings & being 1v1 vs the CB.

I think Porro is the weakness in this side and tactics. He's great going forward but very average receiving the ball with his back to goal in midfield. It could be worth considering playing Betancur in his place. Outside of that, they need a dribbler outside and Soloman may be good enough for that but he's still unproven. If they manage to control the defensive transitions, which will be a huge task, they might challenge for top 6.
@Minyvan66
@Minyvan66 8 ай бұрын
Porro is fantastic, and Bentancur is a midfielder not a right back. I don't think it's likely that Bentancur is randomly pushed to full back after recovering from his injury. Also, you haven't mentioned Johnson - could be a real gem, just have to wait and see
@HishamR89
@HishamR89 8 ай бұрын
Oh yes I forgot about Johnson! @@Minyvan66 I think he'll fit like a glove. regarding Porro, He's great in the last third but he's mostly positioned as Bissouma's partner in the middle in transition and he's rarely outwide other than in the defensive transitions. Thats precisely why I think Betancur could work since he will be inverted on the ball and the less of a risk with his back to goal receiving the ball.

The game only went away from them at the end of the game when it looked like fitness became an issue as well as having players like reguillon losing the ball. The quality of the first 11 in this system is on another level but there will no doubt be issues down the wings and they will have to rely massively on Vdv’s recovery pace

LOL you - I live in Aussie here - ALL tactical systems have flaws, and are figured out eventually e.g. when Tika-Taka was finally figured out and countered. There's no 'Ange army' mate. However, we can and do rightfully point out the Eurocentricism thinking of some football fans in Europe, and they doubting managers from outside Europe or managers coming from small leagues, particularly England-based fans. It is nothing new. Arsenal's fans in the early 90s doubted Wenger when he came from Japan, Manchester United fans doubted Alex Ferguson coming from Aberdeen, Swansea and Brighton fans had doubts when Graham Potter came from a small club from Sweden, many doubted if Eddie Howe could manage in the Premier League despite bringing up Bournemouth from the 4th tier as well..... And many Celtic fans, most famously Alan Brazil, doubted Ange as well when he came from Japan to Celtic as well. Another Aussie manager, Graham Arnold, who outsmarted and beat Denmark with a far less talented squad and was named the best manager of the World Cup, and how he isn’t managing a big European club, while the likes of football’s ‘nepo-babies’ with terrible records like Lampard and Scott Parker kept on getting rehired is a clear example of this Euro and English-centricism.
