Wesley's relationship with his dad is something so interesting to me. It's brought up originally in 1x14 with him saying "A father doesn't have to be possessed to hurt his children..." and then later when the demon uses that to make him stall and distract him, then they dont talk it about again until 2x19

I feel like they also allude it to it in 2x04 "Untouched" where Wesley figures out Bethany's abuser is her father. I don't think the nature of Wesley's parental abuse is the same as hers but I do think it's a significant character moment that he's the one who makes that connection.

I wonder if all watchers have a similar relationship with their parents and are competitive with their siblings if they got any. It does groom them to be obedient subordinates. I don't remember Giles talking much about his family or being visited by them. It seems like being the Ripper made him a social pariah among the watchers and could have impacted his family's reputation. Wesley's relationship with his dad does explain a lot of his behavior in retrospect, even when he was on BtVS. They both did feel like children trying to get the council's approval at times and were blinded by authority.

If it wasn't already evident, the writers confirmed around this time that they tried to pair lighter episodes of Buffy with darker episodes of Angel this season where possible, and vice-versa. You _really_ notice it around the time of The Body - Angel's previously very dark second season takes a hard left turn into comedy shenanigans at the _exact_ moment that Buffy's fifth season, which started as very light, fun and cosy, swerves right into heavy drama and tragedy. Buffy and co are fighting for their lives and the fate of the world while Angel Investigations goes on a goofy medieval fantasy romp. I think that's a big reason why watch guides recommend watching the last four episodes of Buffy and then the last four of Angel - so you don't get whiplash from the transition from Buffy being so overwhelmed that she goes into depressed catatonia to "Numfar! Do the dance of joy!" (They're a few episodes ahead on Patreon, none of this is a spoiler.)

Poor Wesley, the implications about his relationship with his dad are heartbreaking, and really inform how much he seeks approval, primarily from Angel. I love the addition to the lore here for the Host (Lorne) and how his entire race is basically empaths who can use that in different ways. He uses his empathic gifts through music - something that doesn't even exist in his home dimension. I love his story in this show, and I can't say more until the next couple of episodes. Loving this so much! Can't wait for next Friday!

You're very right. I often separate season 2 into two parts, not necessarily the same length. There's the Darla portion and the ramifications of all that. Then, there's Pylea. There is definite good in the first portion, but I love the Pylea arc.

It was great that the show took a weird turn here going to the other world. Lorne's back story and his escape to the nightclubs of L.A are a great little twist. This episode sets us up for some great comedy moments and action in the closing episodes of the Season. Love the Lorne Green Bonanza reference, and looking at younger people trying to work it out. Angel of course would have seen the show Bonanza, love it when the Buffyverse shows drop in these pop culture references from the past and the blank look on people's faces.

For some reason, Sergio’s paella comment had me laughing out loud lol. Fun fact: I was once on the same flight as Daniel Dae Kim. I was flying back to LA for college and he was flying in as well (it was Emmys season). This was back when Lost was still on the air. I remember seeing him up in first class and I was in lowly economy lol. I also ran into him in the airport restroom after the flight and he was all incognito like Lorne with the hat and sunglasses. One of the few times I actually noticed a celebrity out in public.

Love the change of scenery. The guys fighting their way through the mob 🔥Not them being captured as soon as Wesley said he thinks they’re winning 😂 The gang trapped in the dungeon while they plan to rid Cordy of the sight. Loved the Pylea Mini Arc with comedy overload, and a great character interaction. It was great to see this show take this strange turn in the other world. Lorne of course doesn't want to back to Pylea and the way Cordy The Cow is being treated it's no wonder, and we get out first proper look at Fred. Gavin turns up in pure lawyer mode about the hotel, but there is no way the guys are leaving. Again we have a kind of homage to Back To The Future where Marty had to drive his car through a portal to reach the past, similar here to get to Pylea. Gunn of course would never leave them to go alone, and of course they leave the book! Great comedy when Wesley says ' I think we are winning, and the next shot is all of them captured and bound together. After the guys are in prison we then get to see the twist with Cordelia as the Queen, a part that was made for her. This sets up a great finish to the Season.

The Drakken bears a striking resemblance to the demon created by the spell Jonathan performs in Superstar, and the hell beast from The Prom episode is much like the tracker beast.

Happy "Angel" Friday evening with Sergio & Cody! 😊 Getting closer to the end of the season. Episode 2x19: A demon falls through a portal that happens to open at Lorne's karaoke bar. We meet Lorne's cousin. And Cordelia gets falls through a portal to another land. Episode 2x20: We learn more about Lorne's past. Cordy works as a slave in this new land until she has a vision. Angel, Wesley, Gunn, and Lorne arrive in Pylea to save Cordelia. Cody and Sergio have now finally met Fred. At the end of the episode Angel, Gunn, Wesley, and Lorne are brought before the Queen of Pylea....Cordelia. Looking forward to the reactions for the last two episodes of season next week. 😊

Tbh, if the whole series had been like this, I would have loved it! As it is I only watched the first season of Angel back when it aired but because it aired right after Buffy I would usually get spoiled for major plot points because the channel it was on showed preview ads or you'd accidentally see the "previously on" bits.
