Great movie, watched it countless times. On a recent viewing noticed that Harry whistles one of Johnny's songs in his car and later plays a few notes on the piano, despite saying he didn't know who Johnny was. Opens up a realm of different angles.

One of my favorite movies, thanks for reacting to this! By the way, Lisa Bonet starred in The Cosby Show. She played the second oldest daughter and even had a spin off show called A Different World. @@avodaith I remember Cosby wasn't happy about it, but she did go on to star in a Different World for a couple of years after this movie came out, plus she came back to the Cosby Show for a year or two after leaving Different World before I think she was fired for good, so I think there was more to her firing than being in this movie. But how ironic is it knowing what we now know about Cosby that he was all sanctimonious and judgmental of her for doing a nude scene!

re: the incest. It was not gratuitous, though it can appear so. When Harry meets Louis at the end, Louis quotes "King Oedipus": "How terrible is wisdom when it brings no profit to the wise." That was actually an epigram in the novel, so clearly the story was meant to draw several parallels to "Oedipus", which, was one of the first detective stories, as well as a supernatural and religious story. It also explains why Epiphany (ironic name there) had to die.

Cypher told Johnny that the killings were done under his direction, possibly to slow the investigation and allow Cypher to savor each morsel of the discovery. But Johnny had a motive too. Each of the people Johnny killed had a piece of the story and was willing to talk, at least under duress.

The guy in the hood and in his flashbacks is Harold Angel. Favourite had "extensive facial surgery, so no one regognises him, but the poor soldiers ghost haunts him. In the novel, Angel has a crude reconstructed nose made of implanted wax that partially melted when he fell asleep on a beach. So, from there on his nose was like a combination of a drunkards and a boxers nose.

Awesome movie, awesome reaction/ review - your detective work was spot-on! I saw it for the first time when I was a kid, and had to go back and watch it again to catch all the clues and references. The first clue is in the names; "Harry" (or perhaps, "Hairy", aka "Beastly") Angel. Louis Cyphre (Cypher or "code") is the most obvious perhaps, as Lucifer, then there was Fowler, Spider, Winesap (as in, the color of blood draining, perhaps), and Detective Deimos (Demon). Epiphany Proudfoot's character just happens to come along around the time the viewer is staring to suspect that something really rotten is happening in Denmark, so to speak. So those are the first key clues. As for the spinning fans, when they spin one direction, he's Angel, when they spin the other, he's Johnny Favorite (and when they stop spinning, he's in transition), thus when he's playing detective, they spin one way, and when the suspects are being murdered, they're spinning the other. You obviously picked up on the use of mirrors and his refusal to really take a good look at himself. Lisa Bonet, for the record, is pronounced with the French intonation, "Bone-Ay". Her casting was controversial at the time because she was still filming her role on the top-rated, super-family-friendly Cosby Show, and Bill Cosby himself warned her not to take the job because he felt it was exploitative and that nudity would ruin her career. Ironically, as is so often the case with conservatives, it was the Cosby Show producers who shunned her after she played the part (for which she always deservingly earned high praise), and they reduced her role on the series to occasional cameos, labeling her as "difficult", and casting a shadow over her career. Politics... always funny in retrospect, like the guy from Overnight talking smack about Harvey Weinstein and getting blacklisted for his opinion, only to have Weinstein's own dark side get exposed years later. As MLK Jr. once said, "the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice," lol. Its hard to look at Mickey Rourke now and imagine that he was ever a sex symbol, but back in the days before the internet, he WAS softcore porn for a lot of girls, having gained tremendous popularity starring in films that were well-suited to late-night "Showtime" fare, or "Skinemax" (Cinemax) cable networks (like Body Heat, 9 1/2 Weeks, and Wild Orchid). Johnny Handsome is another noir-ish tale featuring Rourke and a young Morgan Freeman that's worth checking out if you enjoy films that embody the spirit of "I Fought the Law and the Law Won", lol. As always, sorry for the word salad, and I can't wait to see whatever's next!

Famous musicians in the movie. Toot Sweet was played by Blues great Brownie McGhee. The saxophone was played by British Jazz great Courtney Pine. The nudity in the film cost Lisa Bonet her role on The Cosby Show & A Different World. Believe it or not, Mickey Rourke was a sex symbol at this point in his career. His attempts to become a professional boxer ended that. He was nearly unrecognizable when he returned to acting.

But if this is true , and Johnny favorite had to kill Harry angel and eat his heart , to switch the soul from one body to the other ... then , wouldn't it had to have been Harry Angel who killed Johnny favorite , then let his own soul be switched? This movie demonstrates a magnificent noir style through production design that was aped relentlessly in music videos and commercials in the 80s to the point where it became cliche: hard line shaft lighting, fan blade silhouettes, diffused backlight, grimy textures, damp highlights. Alan Parker, Adrian Lyne, and Tony Scott were masters of this style and as this film demonstrates, it's a sight to behold when it's done well. It pisses me off that it's gone out of favor or used on shit films.

@@ShanWatchesMovies Funnily enough, Tony and Ridley both jumped ship on their older styles by the late '90s. I think Oliver Stone's films from NATURAL BORN KILLERS and U-TURN inspired the shift. But their 80s stuff? Whoahohohohoooooooa Nelly! You really see this look in action! BEVERLY HILLS COP II, BLADE RUNNER, THE LAST BOY SCOUT, and Lyne's JACOB'S LADDER are some of the top-tier examples.

I always interpreted the change in air pressure with when the true Johnny Favorite emerged and started to eliminate anyone who knew the truth and participated in his attempt to escape Lucifer. The blood running from the walls during the infamous sex scene was the blood between them crying out...on some level he knew who he was and so did she.

I thought I'd seen this movie, but none of it seemed familiar. I remember a lot of hype surrounding this film when it was released. I've definitely seen The Wall, since you mentioned it. I'm a longtime Pink Floyd fan, so that one was a must for me.

Great analysis as always. Parker's films always have rich atmosphere and great style. This film is certainly memorable but I'm not a fan of exposition dump endings. My fave Parker film is Fame. Mississippi Burning is also worthwhile. Shoot the Moon has heartfelt moments.

Shan, your PC looks very nice but I'm worried about water cooling setup. Your radiator for your CPU cooler is mounted incorrectly. If you're going to mount it vertically, the hoses should be at the bottom of the case, so that bubbles in the cooling fluid stay at the top of the radiator and not at the bottom. With your mounting of the hoses near the top, the pump is blowing a mixture of water and bubbles into the CPU block, which isn't providing proper cooling. You may even hear a bubbling sound in the hoses right now as a result. If the hoses aren't long enough to have them near the bottom of the base, you might be able to mount it horizontally along the top of the case, in which care there are also proper mountings to consider. Reference the following for more information and good luck. /watch?v=BbGomv195sk

Thank you for the concern man. I'm aware of the radiator situation. Unfortunately, even if the case looks good, I can't mount the radiator on the front or on the top due to the hoses being too short. I even tried inverting the radiator at its current position. Fortunately, even though mine isn't the best solution, I didn't experience any cooling degradation over the 3+ years I've been using it. Usually idles at about 33-35 C, (which is close to room temperature in my country) and goes up to 75 C during rendering/gaming. All my cores are overclocked to 5GHz so 75 C isn't too bad. Worse case scenario, the AIO will fail eventually and I'll just replace it, it's 3+ years old after all.

Thanks for another great review Shan! "This is a film that I've never seen or heard of before." It's interesting to see which films get lasting fame and which don't over the years. I was surprised to hear you'd never heard of it. Just as I'm often surprised to see which films and other media aren't being reacted to (outside of copyright blackouts). _Angel Heart_ also fits into a pretty sparsely populated sub-genre (one of Angel Heart's many different sub-genres), with other films like _The Devil's Advocate_ . I'm also glad to see the film aged well. I haven't revisited it in a long time, and sometimes these films don't age well (for various reasons: filmmaking styles, cultural relevance, viewer blinders, changing conventions, etc.)

Another classic and another film I have seen several times (but not so recently) Keep up the good work :) If you haven't seen it, there is a very good chance you'll love Alan Parker's "Mississippi Burning", Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe as two FBI agents (1988)

Johnny Favourite is described as being 'truly evil', and was clearly into cult, and supernatural practices. Angel is almost an innocent, possessed by Johnny Favourite, almost like a dual personality. Angel is not aware of Johnny Favourite's actions. You might like other Micky Rourke films 'Sin City' or 'Rumble Fish'. 'The Wrestler' is awesome.

For another excellent film with Lisa Bonet check out High Fidelity (2000). Also starring John Cusack and Jack Black. And someone else already mentioned Enemy of the State (1998), directed by Tony Scott and starring Will Smith and Gene Hackman. Both of them are well worth a watch.

This movie is awesome! Thanks for reacting to it! If you like the themes I suggest you to try an old videogame called Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Fathers (you can find it easily on GOG or Steam, there's also a 20th Anniversary edition with better graphics but I prefer the original), the game was heavily inspired by this movie and feature voice acting by great stars like Tim Curry & Mark Hamill. I don't think you do videogame reactions but I hope you'll give it a try even on your own because it's one of the great classics and if you liked this movie you'll love that game. :)
