Actually in the French Revolution, that apparently did happen. "Women in pre-Revolutionary France had no legal or political rights and were expected to be completely subservient to their husbands. So when the Revolution came about, they joined the army, protested, and hosted salons to promote women's rights. And if there was blowback from men, sometimes they'd cross dress and try to join the fighting that way."
