Policy holder/owner has to sign off on any and all changes. The insured has no say unless they are also the policy holder. So... if she is the owner, ain't no way she's signing it over if she is 20 and he is 65.

It's too late now. The son could have the power of attorney form fill out and have his father sign it. Going this route, the son has the power to manage his father's financial and make decision how to care for his father's health. The son also has the power to take back his father's life insurance policy.

If the father is not the owner, he wouldn't be able to make any changes through POA. Judging from their inability to make any changes and his 2nd wife had all the say, it is likely she is the only one listed as policy owner.

You are right at some levels but we don’t live with them so we don’t know the hardship. My father also left us when I was only 18 and I am the oldest. There were 5 of us and I have to help my mom raised my younger siblings. I tried over 10 to 15 years with our dad. He doesn’t want anything with us and pushed us away. Whenever he called us, it’s because he needed money. When he passed, we all went but it’s only to see him. None of us cry.
