But if you think about it these people are getting played because if they really wanted someone to report on the conditions of their company they would’ve invited actual journalist instead they invited influencers who would get canceled over the situation and give them more promo while doing it. And this isn’t my own opinion this is coming from the woman who made the original Shein documentary she said that Shein did this on purpose they could’ve easily invited actual journalists but then again that probably would’ve ended in real change that they never actually wanted to happen

@cutthroatalex7291Yes, all fast fashion companies around the world do partake in these practices, but Shein produces and manufactures new designs at a ridiculously high rate compared to brands like Zara and H&M, and that’s saying something. Plus, as the person above me stated, as far as I’m aware brands like Zara and H&M haven’t brought influencers to a fake factory. Im not here to cancel anyone who went on this trip or to shame anyone for buying from these companies, just stating that the idea that Shein is the same as other fast fashion companies just isn’t true.

If you actually think about it Shein is playing these people. They invited influencers who don’t have any experience in journalism to report on the conditions of their company. I’m pretty sure that Shein planned this for publicity maybe even the publicity that they would get from influencers being canceled (this was even on the news giving them more publicity.) I think that Shein chose these influencers to throw them under the bus while they got free promo 🤷🏽‍♀️

shein took advantage of her as a plus size influencer & her plus size followers. which doesn't excuse her taking part in it, but they know that plus size influencers (& plus size people in any industry) typically don't get the opportunities that straight size influencers get, like brand trips. they also know that plus size women & feminine presenting people are a MASSIVE part of their consumer base (because they can't find clothes elsewhere), & they know that many of these plus size people probably feel bad about buying from shein because their exploitative labor policies have been so thoroughly exposed on the internet. so they specifically chose a plus size influencer & specifically decided to give her a factory tour for these reasons. it's all very calculated & they did it all for their own gain, to try & manage their crumbling image. but of course every company does everything for their own gain & no one cares about anyone else because we live in a capitalist hell of our own creation.

Even if Shein was using exclusively decent factories, they would still be notorious for stealing from small creators (often for product pictures) and independent brands (stealing product designs down to the styling of photography). Also it's impossible to produce "only what's needed" when you drop tens of new designs per day Even if they made no more than 50 of each garment, those kinds of numbers add up FAST. Their entire business model is hella unethical
@bleuumscarlett7977

Right? If they actually only made what was needed, you'd have ordering periods, wait times of a few weeks for production for that design/collection and then whatever time for shipping. Thing is, that first, she posted a video gaslighting people; implying that if we believed “rumors about Shein”, we weren’t “independent” thinkers. Then she makes these statements that we haven’t been to China, that she knows better, etc. that video was quite nasty. And just after repeated criticism, then she finally posted somewhat an apology video yet still didn’t accept accountability trying to defer to making certain decisions due to her own size and vulnerabilities. Basically excuses. and lastly she uses these empty phrases to describe herself as “investigative journalist” or “confidence” ambassador. First of, she is no journalist; 2nd, people who are truly confident, don’t have to announce that every step. I don’t know if she is dumb or she pretended to be. Even I, person who doesn’t know much about clothing industry, can tell Shein uses shady practices just based on their prices.

@@Sarahlee358 yeah but that still doesn't change the fact that the person actually came clean and admitted that they were in the wrong even when they were paid real good by Shein to keep lying and keep the same narrative. just look at mikayla for example, she just doesn't give a damn about anything or anyone after numerous controversies and she is a huge influencer who has big impact on community. where did i ever say in my comment that her coming clean suddenly negated all of her wrong doings? i just pointed out that it was neat of her, nowadays influencers don't care enough to even pretend they are sorry and in the wrong.

I've recently lived in China for a year. Been to Guangzhou, stayed in Shenzhen, saw a lot of places and met many native Friends and let me tell you... The work conditions are absolutely horrendous. It doesn't matter if you're a low class worker or middle class worker; it is absolutely different from what we are used to. In my time there I got to acknowledge how privileged I really am - just by living in Germany... Just by being German. China is incredibly beautiful and very welcoming, but our friends were always stressed out, always at work. Their lives didn't revolve around them, it revolves around work. Every minute you are there, counts. Breaks are rare, vacations are practically non existent - except for the public holidays, and if you miss a day because of sickness, you better hope you can come in the next, otherwise who is going to pay the rent? There is also no payout for mother leave when you just had a baby. Most mothers are back to work shortly after delivery. I believe that there are company who are trying to bring a change, but I haven't personally seen them or made friends with anyone, who works there. So yeah. I love China, China is great, beautiful, warm - for tourists.

This 👆. I believe this happens in many other Asian countries as well. My husband works in logistics in an Asian owned company here in North Germany. Logistics here is already kind of bad, in my experience, but this Asian company kind of wants to bring the toxic work environment into the Firm and they don't like it that Germans have so many vacations and sick days. Currently, everyone offers home office but not them, of course. They were even mad that they had to implement a system for logging in the working time. Now imagine trying to defend a clothing company based in China that's just crazy!

@@sancochita7392 yes!!! That situation is very similar to mine. Apparently, they just shrink after years or decades or centuries depending on what type of plastic they are until they become small enough that we just INHALE them. People also forget this is just a small part of the chain, even ethically made clothes often use unethical fabric, material sourcing is often Horrible. Pregnant women in field under the hot sun for 14 hours a day. How people still believe in ethical fashion is beyond me. If you wanna be ethical, just buy less, use what u buy, fix what is broken

Exactly this!! Rather buy from a company who acknowledges the industry is horrible but invests in making change! Fresh from the farm up the road eggs can use child labour because the farmers are using their own families to cut costs, nowhere and nothing is ethical in our world unfortunately!

Lol so I've worked in retail and I've worked in corporate and I can tell you this, the hoops they go through when their is a visit is unmatched. When the big boss comes in, we all go by the handbook but we all know that's not how it is daily. A lot of influencers never worked regular jobs so there's this naivety about just normal life

I think they picked small to mid size influencers on purpose. They knew they could wine and dine them and these influencers would sing whatever song they told them. As for China being a separate issue… it really isn’t. For the record when I say Chine I mean the CCP (the government of China) and not the people. The unfortunate reality is that many of these factories use forced labor of oppressed people in China (like the Uyghurs). In addition private companies are not really private in China. The CCP has a lot of control over “private” companies located in mainland China. There is a lot of xenophobia associated with China and their way of life but that doesn’t mean there are not problem and problems that bleed into issues like fast fashion.

When u were talking about mothers and babies, it reminded me of a situation that happened to me, I was on the bus with my daughter, she was 2-3 and we drove past her half sisters house and she excitedly said her sisters name, she wasn’t loud, this woman behind me told me to shut my child up, say what u want about me but say something about my daughter, well the gloves comes off. I didn’t make a scene or be nasty, I just said to her, she isn’t making loads of noise, leave her be. I was so embarrassed, but other people on the bus stuck up for me. You are right though, companies don’t care about mothers, I worked for the coop for 11 years, I had to pay for childcare etc to work a job, when I was phoned to do overtime, I had to do it or my manager would make my life hell, but there were some people who had kids and they worked set shifts, I was a single mother and the others weren’t but I was penalised. I never used the excuse of having a child, I worked different shifts, maybe I should have been like the others and only worked school hours, but I worked my way up the ladder that way and ended up being an assistant manager

To deny fast fashion is classist because some people can’t afford to spend hundreds on clothes but to accept fast fashion is supporting slave labour, bad working conditions and bad quality clothes. The influencers who did this should be ashamed of themselves

I don’t believe it is classist. Thrift, handmedowns, saving up for staple pieces. Also you can buy clothes on clearence ir deals. Poshmark, vinted, letgo etc. are great apps for buying lightly used pieces. Also making your own clothing is an option. I can understand the argument of it being more affordable but there are plenty of other affordable options.

Honestly even as a plus size person myseld, I think there are better places to shop. SheIn still has a low size range for plus size people and you can shop plus size fast fashion that isn't as significantly harmful. The level they produce at is unnecessarily massive

the worst part about only being able to afford shein (and occasionally target, if it’s on sale or I save up) is that people LOVE to tell me to thrift but every thrift store near me is filled to the brim with shein clothes that are priced MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THEY ARE NEW. i’ve seen TANK TOPS that are about $5 on shein priced at $8-10 at buffalo exchange. i’m also just out of the standard sizes so it’s even worse. like don’t get me wrong I would probably prefer to thrift if the clothes were priced reasonably for fast fashion pieces that weren’t expensive to begin with (and the thrift stores are hurting themselves because if the shein stuff was cheaper i’d buy all my clothes there instead).

Thank you for speaking up for us parents as well. I always hate the looks people give when my kids scream. I've even seen my own family members do that... it's like, "you're pissed my kids are screaming around you for literally a minute but this doesn't stop when we leave the store. They scream the ride home and at home." I get in my personal situation I chose to "sideways dance" and get pregnant so I know it's all on me. But, I did not sign up for neglect from society just because I'm a mom. The, "you're a mom, its your job." Yeah, its my job to take care of my kids but if someone sees a parent struggling they laugh like its "just part of motherhood" like I deserve disrespect. I'm taking care of CHILDREN. Children are the most important people on the planet and should be taken care of and respected unconditionally. That means understanding and helping moms, dads, and gaurdians too. Its like, I want to work again (I was a body piercer but I don't ever want to go back into that field...) with birds. I love birds and want to help and even do rescue work but child care is too much in the states. Even a part-time job would end up costing us money. I've wanted to make makeup vids for years as well. Trying to get up the confidence to just do it and continue doing it. 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍⚧️🥝💚🖤

A family member of mine worked for a few months in one of the largest umbrella companies in Asia, and their main factories are in China. When he went to check on the factories in China for a work trip, he was so astonished and terrified. The working conditions are inhumane, the people are treated like animals, and no one is able to do anything to change their conditions because all the higher ups wished was to minimize cost. As his beliefs did not align with the company, despite a well-pay, he quit after his trial months. China is so good at propaganda and brainwashing others it’s crazy, I would never ever trust what they are proudly presenting to us.

One thing I will say is I work for Amazon and after only 3 months of working there I went into labor and when i tried going back to work a week later my manager was like no you should be home took me to HR got me 10 weeks off paid and then paid for my uber home. They also have a private room to pump in if needed. They also sent me a giftbox worth like $150. No they don't have childcare but I felt cared about and taken care of it wS nice.

her walking thru the factory like "woah labor is so fascinating"......sigh. i understand being fascinated by the machines but not treating the humans working there as content- i did an internship at a printing factory and i found it so fascinating as a person who has a special interest on printing technology to talk with the workers and working with them and understanding how every machine worked. i filled a whole sketchbook with sketches of the machines and little drawings of the way they function, but the difference is i WORKED there and wasnt invited to make content out of labor for a huge unethical and criminal corporation.

I saw this on the news and the reporter who did the documentary on Shein’s actual conditions a made a good point. These influencers are messing up and saying all of these things because they aren’t journalist… They’re influencers. And shein did this on purpose because they knew that they could invite someone like an influencer who wouldn’t do their research and take what they say at face value. You have to remember their job is to influence not to report on serious matters. Shein is literally using them, if they truly wanted someone to judge the working conditions and actually factually report on their company they would’ve invited a journalist. Instead they chose these influencers who could give them press (like this video) even from them getting thrown under the bus and getting “canceled” for lack of a better word
