9.5??? Are you kidding me? Given the circumstance: THE Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, honoring an Iranian lady who is held in jail for advocating for women’s rights in Iran, with Angelina’s Grand Mother being Iranian, the lady’s two kids sitting right there on stage with Angelia…. This performance was full of stress! And Angelina was PERFECT!!! She wasn’t trying to show off her singing ability, she was singing to the lady’s kids, singing a prayer of hope, singing to the world! Absolutely perfect! I’ve heard this dozens of times, and each time it brings me to tears! This rates a 20/10!!!!

This was a tender, restrained version, befitting the occasion. The recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize winner is a woman who is imprisoned and on a hunger strike, defending women's rights in Iran. Her 17 year old twins were there in her stead, and to me, it felt like Angelina's voice was a channel to connect them in their love and reassure them. Great reaction guys. I loved it.

As many have pointed out, Angelina obviously picked this song because of the origin and meaning of the song and the similarity to the occasion. But more than that she amazingly adjusted the pace and tone of this performance to perfectly fit the occasion. The version of this song she performed in the NH concert last summer was very different, and to many, was the best song of the night and the best live performance of any Song she had ever done. The only reason to change that version was to make this performance match the occasion. The fact that a 17 year old was that thoughtful, empathetic, compassionate and talented enough to do what she did is astonishing. This performance is in my top 5 of her entire catalog!

This version, for this occasion, honoring Narges Mohammadi from Iran for her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all, is more subdued due to Narges being imprisoned in Iran and her children waiting for her. With Angelina's Grandma Mery being from Iran, this had even more meaning for Angelina and her family as well.

PS You are not the only reactors waiting for her to explode throughout the entire piece 😉. Which is understandable if you think this is just another Angelina cover and knowing her skills. But this is an excerpt from the tribute TV broadcast on NRK1 (Norway's nationl TV station) in honor of this year's NPP laureate, consisting mainly of interviews with her relatives and supplemented by five pieces of music - one of them by Angelina Jordan.

I agree. But I've heard several versions that I like better than Bobby's. His voice is bright, thin, and somewhat piercing. Many associate it with the very emotional scene from "Ghost". I believe Angelina's warm, dark, raspy voice is much better suited to the lyrics of this iconic song. She includes more runs then I prefer, but her performance is still Wonderful. People refer to Bobby's version as the Righteous Brothers, but it was just Bobby Hatfield; Bill Medley was not included anyway. I understand they flipped a coin to see who would perform this song. I would love to hear Bill's version, because he has that deep, dark, warm, baritone voice that would be so well-suited for these lyrics. Until then, I prefer this performance by Angelina more than any live version I have ever heard.

The parallels to Ms. Callas are uncanny. However in Ms. Jordan's case she is the true unicorn. No one in the musical world that has graced this world, has effected so many and compelled them to be better to themselves and others, just by the force of being. A truly historical moment in musical history. Rb

Todd Duncan's original performance of this song was performed from a prison cell in the movie "Unchained". It was presented as a song of loss and longing. It was very different than the rendition the Righteous Brothers presented 10 years later. Their version was more of an upbeat pop presentation. I probably first heard the song sung by Harry Belafonte in 1956. Then many others before Bobby Hatfield... Angelina was singing to the husband and children of the Nobel laureate who hasn’t seen them in 9 years. They're sitting right there with her as she sings. This was a tribute to her sacrifice. As such, Angelina presented it respectfully with the feeling of loss and longing that the original portrayed. This is, in fact, a real life tragedy such as was depicted in the movie. Narges is looking at a total of 31 years of sentences. Angelina could not have performed this song better considering the circumstances. It was truly an incredible emotional performance... This was a tribute not a celebration. It was about Narges Mohammedi not Angelina... Angelina performed the song in a completely different manner at her Portsmouth, NH concert last September... So many reactors simply compare her performance to the Righteous Brothers. It would have been inappropriate for her to present that type of rendition in this situation. Her arrangement and presentation of the song was masterful, befitting of the circumstance and very much in tune with the meaning original presentation back in 1955.

The occasion must be considered when listening to this performance. Her soft and gentle arrangement is in context with the honoring of the jailed Iranian womens rights activist. Soaring and belting vocals were not appropriate for the audience which included the daughters of the jailed woman. Note the gown and sparkling headband, gives the image of an angel. This performance was important to Angelina due to her Grandmothers Iranian heritage. Multiple listenings reveal the usual beautiful Angelina subtleties. That last note drifts away to heaven.

@@dsgp7835 you're most welcome. I also read that her mother was on a hunger strike and had called them from prison to tell them what to say on her behalf in her acceptance speech. As you know, she had been in and out of prison before for standing up for women's rights. Years earlier her husband wanted to take the family out of Iran but she wanted to stay to fight the good fight. They left, she stayed, and unless a miracle happens, will sadly spend the rest of her life in prison.

I've been subscribed to your channel since the day you did your first reaction to Angelina and have never had a quibble about your scoring of an Angelina performance, util now. The Peace Prize was awarded to Narges Mohammdi, a 51-year-old Iranian peace activist who advocated for equality and the rights of women in Iran. She was arrested for the second time in 2013 and sentenced to 32 years in prison. Her husband had previously been sentenced to 14 years imprisonment and when he was released he and their two children (towns - a son and a daughter)) moved to France. The children are the same age as Angelina and have not seen their mother since 2013. Taking the circumstances into consideration, it would have been quite out of character for Angelina to sing the song in the manner of her performances at 9 and 12. In the performance, I think that Angelina sang from the perspective of a wife and mother, telling her husband and children that she loves them but needs their love to stay strong. The pain and anguish in Angelina's voice is unbelievable.

BP1 and BP2 I always enjoy your reactions to Angelina and this performance called for all the love and emotion Angelina could deliver. I thought "Unchained Melody" was a odd choice for this event, but have since learned the history of the song. More on that later. Certainly Angelina was thrilled to be performing back in her home country of Norway, where she is a national treasure, but this performance goes way beyond that honor. She first performed at the Save the Children event at the 2014 Peace Prize event, when she was 8 years old. Narges Mohammadi was this years' recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. Narges, is currently on a hunger strike while imprisoned in Iran, for being an activist for women's rights. Her two children spoke on her behalf at this event. Most of the performers were Iranian. We know Angelina's grandmother, Mery Zamani, grew up in Iran and was a prodigy for painting and poetry. We can imagine the conversations Mery had with Angelina about Narges. This performance had to be extremely meaningful to Angelina and her family. I hope all the angels will spread the story of Narges and her mission, with the hope for change. In 1954, Alex North was contracted to compose the score for the prison film Unchained (released in 1955). North had a melody he had written in the 1930s and composed and recorded the score when he was asked to write a song based upon the movie's theme. North asked Hy Zaret to write the lyrics. After first refusing, Zaret and North together wrote "Unchained Melody. Zaret refused the producer's request to include the word "unchained" in his lyrics. The song eventually became known as the "Unchained Melody" even though the song does not actually include the word "unchained". Instead, Zaret chose to focus on someone who pines for a lover he has not seen in a "long, lonely time". "Unchained Melody" comes from the film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release.

The original was the theme from the 1955 movie "Unchained". Bobby released his version in 1965, and it was quickly considered the standard for this song. But in 1990, when they used it in the movie "Ghost", it rose to even higher status. Most people (not me) consider it their favorite version, but I like Angelina's performance here (she's done it several times) better. You obviously didn't hear what I heard. The original is from a movie which portrays a man in prison. Think of that context. Angelina who has Iranian heritage selected this song very purposefully. The awardee isNarges Mohamedi who is in an Iranian prison has two children who are Angelina's age. The woman who introduced Angelina had just interviewed the children. Angelina who is so sensitive to others has crafted a version of this song to sing to the children as if it comes from their mother. You know this because at the end she looks toward the children and puts her hand over her heart. She crafted this version with a sense of restraint and deep emotion. Straight from her heart. Angelina never oversings.

The sad back story of how the Nobel Prize winner was awarded this honor had a direct affect on how Angelina chose to cover this song the way she did. The bravery of the female Iranian award winner and the consequences of her bravely speaking out against the treatment of Iranian women hits home with Angelina since her grandma, Mery Zamani is Iranian. The award winner’s seventeen year old twin son and daughter were present. Angelina said that this was a very emotional performance for her. IMO, She deserved the highest honor that we can bestow upon her for allowing her sensitivity and empathy be her guide in how to interpret the lyrics for the occasion.

It is impossible to understand this rendition without taking into account the occasion and who the NPP laureate is. So please inform yourself and think about it again. short history breakup: 1930s this melody was written 1955 supplemented with lyrics for the prison film "Unchained" for 10 years dozens of covers by recognized artists 1965 Bobby Hatfield's well-known version 1977 a terminally ill Elvis greets his fans one last time with his very own version 1990 reuse of Bobby's version in the "Ghost" movie 2015 Angelina Jordan lets us see briefly into the future at Anne Lindmo's show 2023 Angelina Jordan at the Nobel Peace Prize concert creates a heartbreaking rendition dedicated to a imprisioned NPP laureate in front of their kids, husband and brother Angelina was primarily inspired by Elvis' version (her own words on the stage in Portsmouth) but it's obvious that Bobby also played a role - so it's a kind of Elvis/Righteous Brothers fusion plus Angelina spin, embedded in the soundscape that KORK contributes (btw. Angelina and KORK did "Summertime" together when she was 10yo). So 9.5 - well...

@andyschnell58, As always, it is about the song and the occasion, for Angelina. The film centered on a man who contemplates either escaping from prison to live life on the run or completing his sentence and returning to his wife and family. So indeed this song fits along with Narges being in prison and her two children, and the rest of the people who embrace freedom, calling for her release. It has been 9 years since Narge has seen her husband and daughters.

9.5 is a good score, but if you learn more about the song and the recipient's story, no doubt you'd give it a 10;) I think you were expecting her to blow up parts of the song, which she is well capable of, but this was not the occasion. It was classy, mature, and heartfelt. Not a look at me and what I can do moment. Which is kind of ironic because the thought she put into it and the delivery makes you look at her and what she can do;)

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I believe Kork is the orchestra that played for AJ’s performance of Summertime when she was around 10 or 11. A small ensemble of the band backed up her performance of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black.

Sitting directly in front of angelina are the 2 children of narges muhammadi , this performance was not about personal glory or any concern of some u tubers silly score cards , it was intentionally restrained and sombre befitting this event , angelina was sending a message and boy did she ever , every word was conveyed with great feeling and deep emotion . Its as if narges muhammadi had leapt into the body of angelina and poured her heart out to her husband and children .

I'm sooooo tired of reactors who don't acquire knowledge of who got the Nobel peace price and why. Narges Mohammadi (who got the prize), has not seen her 2 children for many, many years. For me it's like Angelina performed the song from the mother Narges to her 2 children, also 17, who were in the audience. And Narges M is in prison in Iran. Love Angelinas performance and it is the most beautiful performance of this song it ever can be..

So you have decided to lower the grade in the scores and leave her at 9.5? Well, nothing to object to, but considering her perfect synchronization with a symphony orchestra with no more than a couple of rehearsals, although it is evident that the symphony worked for her and not the other way around, and her wonderful voice full of feeling with that complicated, daring and dangerous final gift, I can't wait to see who you give a 9.6 to. I wish you the best for this new year.

Most performers start out around 16 or 18 and initially feel a need to vocally show off and belt things out and about 10 years later by their mid 20's or early 30's get over it and start to mature. Angelina is no different EXCEPT her first publicly available studio session was age 6 so she managed to get the whole vocal dramatics and showing off out of her system by 16 .

9.5 is about right. So now you can rest at ease in your assessment. I saw her in rehearsal and know that she changed the initial run which in rehearsal was one continuous run in one breath but was handled in the performance in two segments - perhaps two breaths. I've heard her do that one better. But the glorious ending made up for it. So 9.5 covers it.
