People forget how great Geoffrey Rush was back in the day. Oscar, Emmy, and Tony winner, with two more Oscar noms to his credit. So glad he had the instinct to take this role, when other “serious” actors might not have quite taken the gamble. The line that Ange loved so much-“You best start believing in ghost stories, Ms. turner…you’re in one!”-was such an iconic moment. Props to the writers. And, props to Mr. Rush. Fantastic moment.

The first one is a classic, but tbh the decline already starts with 2. Its a bit like with the Matrix movies. Part 2 is still very good and has some very interesting ideas, but part 3 takes things in a very odd direction and many characters act weird to fit the convoluted plot. 2 and 3 are still good movies, but I think they ruined Elizabeth and Will and there are too many plotlines so many of them feel rushed and confusing. 4 and 5 are cheap cashgrabs.

I always love when they kidnap Elizabeth in the beginning. If she would've used ANY OTHER NAME, they would've let her go back to shore and would've just taken the necklace. But since she used Will's last name, which was ironically the same person they needed blood from, they took her. Shoot, she probably could've said she was the governor's daughter and they still would've let her go. Will was the first person to come to her mind, though, and it just so happened that Will was the person they needed. This might be the best written live-action Disney movie ever made.

Keira Knightley was 16-17 during filming and had to have her mother with her onstage. Orlando Bloom said he felt Keira's mom's glare during the kiss. Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow is the best performance in the movie, with Geoffrey Rush as Barbossa a close second. The one-eyed pirate Ragetti is played by Mackenzie Crook, who played Garreth (Dwight Schrute) on the UK version of The Office. And yes, he did wear a contact. This was Zoe Saldana's first major film role. Most of the outdoor scenes were filmed on St. Vincent. The _Black Pearl_ and _HMS Dauntless_ were built on top of barges, while the _HMS Interceptor_ was the 1790 sloop _Lady Washington_ with some minor retrofits. The animators absolutely hated having to fill in the final fight between Jack and Barbossa due to them constantly moving in and out of the moonlight.

I love these movies for their dialogue. Calling the crew “scabarous dogs” etc. And Jack’s last line, “Bring me that horizon.” Or Barbosa’s “ I feel…..cold”.
@TSIRKLAND
@TSIRKLAND 8 ай бұрын
Barbosa's last words I've always thought were a missed opportunity. For my money, he should have started to say, "I feel..." with the idea that he was about to describe some sensation, but then died before finishing the sentence: we'd never know what exactly he felt in his last moment. Or- it could have been interpreted as a finished sentence in itself: "I feel." To feel anything at all, simply "to feel" could have been a thought. That ambiguity- I think- would have been an even more epic parting line. More enigmatic. More open to interpretation. Finishing the thought with "...cold" I believe was not as good as it could have been. Obviously, for someone who had not felt *anything* for years, feeling any sort of sensation at all was welcome- the fact that "cold" was all he got to experience- not warm, not hungry, not full, not anything but "cold." There's a poetic justice for that cold-hearted pirate. . But I still like my version better. "I feel.." . Others may agree or disagree. . Jack's "...horizon" line is fantastic; doesn't get any better than that! So many great lines in this film, super well-written!
@revangerang
@revangerang 7 ай бұрын
@@TSIRKLAND But feeling "cold" can also mean so many things, not just the physical sensation of lacking warmth and needing a jacket. Like when you're so disappointed/afraid/angry/etc that 'your blood runs cold.' Or cold as in lonely- missing 'the warmth of [another's] flesh'- because of all the backstabbing he did. Besides that, the little hesitation before he says "cold" shows that he's feeling so many more sensations/emotions too. It's just that cold is the predominant one.

This movie was the fourth highest grossing movie of the year ($654 million), has an 86% on Rotten Tomatoes, and Johnny Depp’s performance won him a Critics Choice Award and got him nominated his first Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role. I was obsessed with this movie/trilogy as a kid. It’s gotta be my most rewatched movie ever. I rewatched it as an adult and i was legitimately shocked at how well it held up. The practical effects and sets are SO great, the CG is surprisingly solid for the time (nothing touches the CG in POTC 2 and 3 though, that shit is NUTS) and the story, writing, directing, and acting are all leagues above what they should have been. The entire idea of pirates was an outdated and cheesy concept at the time, with people’s only recent frame of reference being Hook or Muppets Treasure Island, which are way more campy. So a pirate movie based on the fun silly pirate ride at Disney had no reason to be such a fun and compelling film. And regardless of his IRL moral character, Depp redefined the entire cultural idea of a pirate, and portrayed Sparrow in a way that’s so unique, there’s no one else who could have done the character the way he did. It’s a real shame that movies 4 and 5 sucked absolute ass, and subsequently killed the entire pirate genre that they had miraculously revived a decade earlier.

Robin Williams, Hugh Jackman, Michael Keaton, Harrison Ford, Robert DeNiro, Christopher Walken, Steve Martin, Jim Carrey, Matthew McConaughey, and Cary Elwes were considered for Jack Sparrow. Ben Peyton, Chris Masterson, Tobey Maguire, and Jude Law were considered for Will Turner. Jessica Alba, Jaimie Alexander and Amanda Bynes were considered for Elizabeth Swann. Tom Wilkinson, RIP, and Sylvester McCoy were considered for Governor Swann.

@TSIRKLAND 8 ай бұрын
The Dread Pirate Roberts himself?? Cary Elwes dusting off his fencing skills again? That might have been interesting! Learning about the casting process for films is always so interesting. Naturally, the cast plays SUCH an important part in the tenor and character of a film. The right or wrong people in a role, the chemistry between cast members, whatever an actor can bring to a role. Sometimes you hear about who was considered, and knowing their other work, say "Huh; I could see that," or "Well it would have been very different, but I could see how the character might have played to that other actor's strengths," or "Jeez, I'm sure glad none of those happened, because they found THE right people for these roles, and I literally cannot picture ANYONE else playing them!" Any of the outright comedians- Williams, Martin, Carrey- would have made Captain Jack a very different character, and the film a very different film! The older actors- Ford, DeNiro, Walken, etc- would have brought a very different feel: a more world-weary type of pirate. The more action types- Jackman, McConaughey, etc- would have made Sparrow the center of attention all the time: the big action hero. Johnny Depp was young enough at the time to flirt with Elizabeth without it being completely creepsville, but also be too old, really, so we would never ship them seriously. And his style of character-acting allowed others to shine around him, as he did his own thing. He stole every scene of course, but was also generous to NOT steal every scene. If you get what I mean. (I kind of feel that the other movies suffered from either too much or too little Jack Sparrow; this first film got the balance exactly right. I still like all of the other movies (even the ones some people don't), but the producers either tried too hard to cash in on Depp's popularity in the role, or shied away too much and lost out on what he brought to the franchise. Finding that balance is difficult; they got it perfect this first time, and struggled to re-capture that lightning again. IMHO.) The Will Turners and Elizabeth Swans I don't have many strong opinions about, other than I am SO glad they chose who they did. Bloom and Knightley had fantastic chemistry together; they both acted the hell out of their roles individually and together; they looked great together; they were young enough (or youthful-looking enough; Bloom was eight years older than Knightley) to have that sense of optimism and bravado and hope- but they also both had a maturity and core of character that showed through.

Legit one of the best films of all time frfr. The sequels are also high quality, but nothing can compare to this first one. I saw it in the theaters 14 times when it first came out hehe. Jack Sparrow's anticlimactic entrance on his sinking dingy is so iconic, plus the music and choreography, the costumes and effects, cinematography, pacing, the witty dialogue, the fun character dynamics, the skillful blend of multiple story genres, just PEAK. Also as someone who grew up riding the theme park attraction it was based off of, it means even more, not just because the ride itself is nostalgic to me, but they literally made soooo many references to it throughout the film (such as the shot where the alcohol is dripping through his skeleton, for instance), and they made them all completely natural in the film itself, AND made the story so good while staying true to the spirit of the ride?? Like I literally don't know how they made it so perfect. Puts The Haunted Mansion movie to shame, really. Anyways I'm glad you liked it! I had a lot of fun watching your reaction :) Edit: btw yes it is pronounced CARE-uh-BEE-ən rather than the typical cuh-RIBB-eeun because that was the way the name of the original Disneyland ride was pronounced. The scene where Capt. Sparrow & Will Turner use an inverted dingy to walk under water by breathing the air trapped in the hull comes from a 1952 movie starring Burt Lancaster, "The Crimson Pirate". Prior to WWII, Burt Lancaster was a "flyer" in the circus, i.e., trapeze, high wire, etc. After WWII, Lancaster took up acting & was truly one of the first action hero stars. He made a lot of swashbuckler movies & did his own stunts.

The 'two guys' are Pintel and Ragetti. Pintel is the heavyset balding one, Ragetti is the tall skinny one with a fake eye. According to the backstory the actors made for them, Pintel is Ragetti's uncle, and their full names are Abner Pintel and Terry Ragetti. Ragetti is my favorite character, with Jack being a very close second. Mackenzie Crook did such an amazing job in the role.

The first PoC is a movie that had absolutely no right to be as god damn good as it is. When it came out pirate movies were basically done, no-one was interested. And afterwards? Well we know the rest! Its one of those rare gems of a movie that is both a action-adventure popcorn flick, not something that serious or ever intended to be "masterful", and a perfect movie. It really is a masterclass in how to make a "fun" movie an iconic masterclass of flim making and script writing. And though subsequent sequels never quite live up to the first movie, the original trilogy really is fantastic.

I just realized for the first time (I’ve watched this tonsss of times) that when Norrington has the compass, it’s pointed straight at Jack, bc what he wanted most, right then, was Jack! That’s such a great detail!

SUCH a great movie all around! The visual effects were off the chart, the plot was excellent, the dialogue was unbelievable, the acting was top notch, the music was awesome. Some of the best lines ever in movies. Most of the time when I say or think the word 'Caribbean', I say it the first way, Car-I-be-in, but when I'm thinking of, or quoting the movie, I say it the second way, the way Jack says it in when he's on the beach, "Welcome to the Caribbean, love", "Car-i-BE-an". That line has always stuck with me. Great reaction! Looking forward to seeing your reactions to at least the next two, as the first three form a trilogy.

I haven't been here in almost a year, Ange, but what a surprise! I love when people get to this series. It was such a world-turner when it came out. Pirates as a cinema genre was basically dead after a streak of failed projects in the 80's and 90's. This series of movies literally brought it back from the dead, or, should I say, lifted the curse! You should watch all of them, this is a rare series where movies get actually better with each sequel (although it never beats the classic vibe of the 1st, like in Harry Potter)

Angelina, you need to look up the KZbin video of the 1967 original Pirates of the Caribbean ride at Disneyland. Then you'll understand where all the scenes and stories come from. They made a movie based on the ride. (Before they modified the ride to look like the movie.)

Norrington is one of my favourite characters, he does his duty but he's also a genuinely decent man at heart, realises how Elizabeth truly feels for Will, is obviously heartbroken but accepts it without issue. Then (due to knowing Jack isn't a completely evil person) even finds a work around in his duty to allow Jack time to get away without actually pardoning him. He basically just respects everyone around him in different ways.

Well the way to pronounce Caribbean wasn't a issue in my family cause of my Mom. She always called the movies "Pirates of the carrots and peas" and to this day that's the only way my family refers to the movies. We have to correct ourselves when talking about these movies to everyone else because it just comes out naturally that way for all us to the point that we don't notice.

For no apparent reason, this is an almost perfect movie. The dialogue. The action. The pacing. The consistent thematic elements. The fricking callbacks. Barbosa as the perfect sympathetic villain. Norrington as one of the only characters to pull off a lawful good alignment and not be boring af.
@revangerang
@revangerang 7 ай бұрын
So trueeeee. I think what really sets Norrington apart is that he truly loves Elizabeth and gives her his blessing to be happy with the one she loves. That and you can see how worried he is about her while still sticking to his morals earlier in the film. That and he can actually admit when he's been beaten, like the "so it would seem" line. He's not self-righteous, just a good person trying to do good in the way he thinks is right.

Here’s a bit of Jack backstory. He was actually in the East India Trading Company, but then he was tasked with transporting slaves, which he refused. The ship he sailed was burned as punishment I believe. He managed to get it back, painted it black since it was scorched from the fire, and renamed it the Black Pearl. I forget where that comes from though The two funny pirates are Pintel and Rageti. The latter is the one with the wooden eye I haven’t seen many people catch that Jack kept one of the coins when he did. Though it’s odd that you caught that yet were surprised he was cursed 😂

NO SPOILERS AHEAD! Fun fact from Jack's past, as you said you'd like to know more about his backstory. So Jack used to be a privateer to the crown but he done a deal with East India Trading Company to smuggle 100 slaves, that's how his piracy started. However, he later refused to do it and set the slaves free, after which he got branded as a pirate. It's an interesting piece of info that will give a crumb of context to some stuff happening in PotC 2, which is my favourite of them all. I think I speak for all of us when I say go on watching, you're not going to regret it! :D

7:15 There is a deleted scene in the second movie (I think they should have left it in) that shows why that branding of Jack against the Indian Trade Company should be a badge of honor and makes him a real hero. I guess they thought it was better to make it look like he wanted to be a pirate his entire life, instead of being a regular person who became a pirate for choosing to do the right thing.
