This is a cover of the original by Danny Whitten from the band Crazy Horse. The title is wrong and infers Rod wrote it. If you know the story of Danny the song means so much more. He suffered under drug addiction which escalated. Neil asked Crazy Horse to support a new album. Neil paid to have them come out to his home. That night Danny was suffering from the shakes and could not keep up with the band. Neil gave him a ticket and told him to get himself better. Danny pleaded that this was all he had in life. Neil sent him anyway and Danny overdosed that night at home. Neil wrote the song The Needle and The Damage Done because of this. I love a lot of Rod's music but he would tell you he is covering this. Now listen to the song, better yet listen to the original, and feel the pain in it.
