The song Heaven is not a commentary on Heaven, God, or any religion. The song heaven is actually an episode with a distinct story line about an astronaut and his wife and family. The first verse is the wife speaking, saying she "will run the streets and hostile lands" with her feet "never touch[ing] the ground" because she is constantly running (metaphorically) to try and reach her husband, who is above in space in the shuttle. Days pass by as the kids learn to walk. She reflects on the astronauts world: a place so wired (the space shuttle). The astronaut thinks that his situation is a mess. But it is the moment when he and she thinks of their family as the last one's left, the last ones who matter (a dream perhaps), is when they feel each other's presence, and the hairs on their necks stand. It is this singular moment that is truly heaven for them. The second verse is the astronaut talking, wishing that his wife could see the hills beneath the clouds, and an imaginary trail of stars to lead her to him. The love they had when they were young is right outside the door,but this desire is futile, because even though its right outside that door, he cannot open it, for surely he will die in space. He reflects on how her world is also gloriously wired (the city streets and lights). They are both dreaming, and again they feel each other's presence. The hairs stand, and the wife abruptly wakes up from sleeping. She feels an emotion far too great for words. During this instrumental, I picture the astronaut preparing for something big, but we don't know it yet. Scenes of the inside of the shuttle and vista of outer space flash, as well as the kids running through a field. When the light breaks through the clouds, the spaceship is actually landing, and the world for him will begin just like it ended (The minute the spaceship left earth his world ended, but the minute it touched back down, it began again) The wife calls out to her husband, saying that she will always be there forever more at whatever cost. Her world began just as it ended also (It ended when she let go of the astronaut to go into space, and it began again when they hold each other in each other's arms) "Please stay don't go, I got you now, are you curious?" is the two holding each other, wanting to give the other an update on how much things have changed, and their experience during their time apart. Its a beautiful song actually, and I love the story it tells. A tale of love and perseverance. I don't think any other song in the universe has told a story with this level of poetry and cinematic grandeur.
