This video absolutely gave me encouragement to do this hike! I am 66 years old and had a hip replacement in September 2017, but decided that Age is a barrier only if you create that within yourself. I made it to the top November 19, 2021 and would be lying if I didn’t say I wasn’t a bit scared on the chains, But I accomplished it! I did start out with my fingerless mittens, but quickly took them off as I liked the grip of my bare hands. My knuckles got a bit scuffed, but I still felt more comfortable that way! Angel's landing truly is an amazing experience, it wasn't too bad for an experienced hiker or even a smart, semi-experienced hiker. You just had to use caution and pay attention like you said. The only thing that made it sketchy was people on that hike that shouldn't have been. Those with a known fear of heights, so scared they would feeeze up and make it almost impossible to pass them, or those with no experience hiking making this their first real hike. Or those just making stupid choices about their foot wear. I respect those that admit their inexperience o fear of heights and decide not to do the chain section. A lot of people try and push it when they shouldn't, and those are the ones making it hard and dangerous for everyone else. Practice on some smaller hikes with less consequence first to gain experience and build up to that one if you want to do it. Happy hiking.

Now that was very well said! Tempted to move my "explanation" and pin this comment to the op for would-be hikers. I hope people read this because it succinctly sums up what I believe and what others have mentioned in part in the comments. We all need to use caution on this hike, but it is not a death-wish to attempt it. Perhaps the greatest dangers are other humans up there - too many and those who do not belong.

One of my favorite all time hikes! The trail itself is not nearly as scary or dangerous as people make it seem, as long as you don’t do anything stupid. The chains make you feel much more comfortable than you’d think and the rock is very grippy. I highly recommend riding a bike into the park early and starting the hike up in the dark. (Incidentally, I particularly liked how encouraging and positive you were toward the young man who turned back; “no shame” is a great message to support those of us who know, and wisely respect, our natural limits. ALSO, I got a kick out of the other “summiteer” who said said to you, “I recognize the voice.” I thought that was a fun detail, which also reminded me how hiking and being outdoors in beautiful places just inspires human beings to connect with each other. Definitely the best angels landing video I’ve seen. I took a trip to Zion by myself back in May. The landscape up there is unlike anything I’ve ever seen. The hike itself is sometimes overplayed as being extremely dangerous. Really, it’s the crowd of people that make it dangerous. Too many people going up at once, not wearing the proper shoes (don’t wear sneakers) etc. I literally saw a man hiking the chains in his bare feet caring an infant. Just go at the right time of day and it’s perfectly safe. Even the narrowest sections seen in videos like these aren’t as narrow as they seem.

Please be careful with increased crowds guys- two people have died on this hike in less than a month, one of them yesterday.
@AmericasParks3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the concern, Kate. I read about the recent fall - so sad. The crowds are the main problem which adds significantly to the danger.
@jacknmdl3 жыл бұрын
That's not exactly right. The hiker who died on February 18 actually fell off the West Rim Trail at the Moonlight Buttress, a well-known rock climbing area. Initial media reports on the location of his body were incorrect. Still, it is a challenging and potentially dangerous hike.

Nice video!! I had the privilege to climb Angels Landing last year by myself at age 67. It was my favorite hike of all time! Unfortunately, 3 months later, I had a bad Heart Attack and although I am still working to get back in the shape I need, I am not sure I would ever be able to do the climb again. I do hope to do the reverse (downhill) hike from Observation Pt. and the Narrows at some time. I really enjoyed some of your camera angles. It is nice to have friends along to get different angles. I too posted a video of my hike, mostly with my GoPro on a chesty mount which freed up my hands.

Fair point, Phillip. Took some flack in the comments for being too cautious in this video. It's a dangerous hike and the crowds (for a few reasons) could be the biggest hazard. Off-season and early in the morning are key. Thanks for sharing this for other would-be hikers!

Another great video! We are planning to visit Zion (and this trail) early next year. About your toe, as a serious skier, I have a lot of experience fitting boots professionally. There are boot/shoe stretchers and all kinds of customizing tricks a pro fitter can do to make your hiking boots fit like a glove and to help compensate for your toe issue. Even providing superior fit and stability to all the other areas of your foot and up your ankle will take pressure off that toe. I might even go so far as to insert a small, very cold pack in the exact and limited area of that toe to really help keep it cool. Bring a small frozen pack to apply at the top before heading down. With regard to diet, I would also load up on tumeric and black pepper (together=anti-inflammation) as well as Magnesium Glycinate and Vit. D + K2. Nutrition is kind of my thing- as is living an outdoors life style. I always appreciate your videos.
@AmericasParks2 жыл бұрын
That is really great advice! Thank you... you sure do know your stuff! Thankfully the toe, since the time this video was made has really improved. The joint kind of naturally fused together and the Brooks Trail Runners have worked wonders.

Very much so agree with the not doing anything foolish. Back when I was young and foolish (lol), I did this with my friends. Loved watching this, I almost feel like I did it myself, lol. Have to say, back in the 80s I climbed Half Dome three times, all three with a backpack spending the night on top, and this looks so much more scary and dangerous than Half Dome. I think because the cables on Half Dome give you the feeling of climbing a ladder as opposed to this roaming constantly changing climb to the landing, and with only one cable. I can’t even imagine having to pass people going up or down. On Half Dome you quickly figure out how to pass and it isn’t scary after doing it once. I would add, we didn’t even know back then you could clip onto the cable with a harness and it never ever occurred to any of us someone above you could slip and take you down with them!! So, perhaps getting the harness and clipping in is a good idea. They apparently no longer allow people to sleep on top so I feel really lucky to have done it back in the day. Thanks again for the video.

It really highlights the intensity of the hike.
@AmericasParks3 жыл бұрын
It's always nice to start and see how you feel. The chains don't begin until you are about 90% done so it's still a great hike. I kind of think the video made it look more terrifying than it really is. If you go, be careful and use common sense. Enjoy Utah - one of the best states for National Parks!
@larisal6243 жыл бұрын
@Islanders1932 I always wanted to do this hike, but had a very bad fear of heights. With the time and exposing myself more, I'm doing better. I still can't stand on the edge or watch people standing right on the edge. Before doing hike, I thought I would be afraid of going on chains. But honestly it's not bad at all, chains really help. Just make sure you have non slippery hiking shoes. I was also using gloves on chains.

I've done Angel's Landing once before and I remember it was only scary in the beginning part of the chains and then I got used to it. I know you were being very careful when you were filming this but it really looked great still. You've probably already done this before but the 8 mile Observation Point trail I feel is even better than this one because you're actually above Angel's Landing when you reach the end. Very awesome video brother and thank you for sharing.
