My favourite Christmas Hymn but it moves me to tears and I'm always minded of my late children when I hear it. I imagine them walking into Heaven to the strains of this being played. It's a beautiful song in every way both the lyrics and the music.

quite literally the best version on KZbin. every other one is so overproduced and distastefully modern. it is ASTONISHING how hard it is to find a good rendition of this song on this website or on streaming services. i truly wish this was higher quality, but it is beautiful as it is. another commenter noticed that one of the greatest qualities of this performance here is the lack of any indivualism; or egotistical showmanship. the emphasis is placed on harmony and synergy between all the musicians. perhaps this is one of the distinguishing qualities of all great religious music by virtue of religion itself, at least Christianity. altruism over ego. no great solos or sweeping vocal lines, no emphasized pop production, simply brothers and sisters playing in joy and reverence to the Lord. I do not mean to imply that this is the only kind of truly good music, but perhaps this form of musical deindividuation is most suited to songs of faith. this is music meant to be shared. and perhaps the reason this song is so scarcely done justice in professional production settings is that its true soul is only ever realized in obscure, ephemeral church services and Christmas parties. lost to time, but not in the hearts of those in attendance

Angels we have heard on high Sweetly singing o'er the plains And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains Angels we have heard on high Sweetly, sweetly through the night And the mountains in reply Echoing their brief delight Gloria, in excelsis Deo Gloria, in excelsis Deo Shepherds, why this jubilee? Why your joyous strains prolong? What the gladsome tidings be Which inspire your heavenly song? Gloria, in excelsis Deo Gloria, in excelsis Deo Come to Bethlehem and see Him whose birth the angels sing, Come, adore on bended knee, Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Gloria, in excelsis Deo Gloria, in excelsis Deo Yeah Gloria, in excelsis Deo Angels we have heard Angels we have heard on high Angels we have heard, oh Angels we have heard on high Angels we have heard on high Angels we have heard on high In excelsis Deo

Perfecto. As it was written. Perfect. If I want YOU to re-right it, I'll call you. Meanwhile sing it as written, because that is the song. No one asked you to change it.

What are you talking about??? This is as written, nothing in this video is different. In fact, this is the best version of this song on KZbin. Listen to it again and reconsider your statement.

Very very good, and especially because the choir hadn't inserted itself in front of everyone to be "noticed" as "performers" as too often sadly happens these days. We must decrease while He must increase...

Amen! As a former choir member, I hated when a new priest took us out of the choir loft and put us in the front of the church. It made me very uncomfortable and I didn't understand it because we had a beautiful choir loft with great acoustics and the sound just was not the same in the front of the church. I thought it was very Protestant to be in the front of the church and I am not a Protestant. Plus our commodious choir loft was replaced with congregational pews in the front of the church where we couldn't even hear each other. The priest said that having the choir in the front of the church encourages congregational participation and that was just a lie. I knew that the congregation was much more uplifted by the sounds from the loft. And to hear you say that to be in the front of the church emphasizes to be noticed as a performer is all too true. We are not there to be noticed but to give glory to God and being in a choir loft places us a little bit closer to heaven and I really think the angels joined us when we sang.

You know, I heard that percussion but was not sure what instrument it was. Thank you for pointing that out. It does make for a fine ending, without being obtrusive.

@@ARIZJOE The zimbelstern is actually part of the organ. The organist pulls a stop to activate it but does not play any keys for it.
