Today I am very happy to be joined by Professor James Early to discuss how Christianity was reintroduced to the British Isles or to be precise, how it was introduced to the Anglo Saxons or maybe how it was spread among another Germanic aristocracy.
It is complicated. If you listen to Beyond the Big Screen you will know Professor Early. He is a fascinating guy with wide historical interests and knowledge. I hope to have him on many more times.

Anglo-Saxons converted many times into many things, from being slaves to the Romans, into unique revolutionaries, into the Buddhist mindset of Bodhisattva of obeying 'the rule of law (Magna Carta), into Christians, into protestants, into atheists, into scientists, rational thinkers, SF6 aware, etc., but what interests me is why or what converted them into compulsive pedophiles, yet fearing it to be dangerous and harmful, like many Europeans.

@@naimulhaq9626 this is obviously a wind up post . For a start the magna Carta ( great charter) was written during king John's time , 13th century. Long after the Norman invasion and end of Viking Saxon England, Thd Norman dynasty was also over and the plantagenet kings ruled. You need to read some genuine history instead of making it up just because of some jealous nonsense or whatever reason your chatting rubbish.

I have a request tho, just something for you to think about. :) You show such interesting shots during the show, but most of us have no idea where these things can be found. Would you consider putting some info as to where we can find these shots? Some are from ancient books, some are sculptures found in ancient architecture, etc. Thanks so much!

I’m at 44” of the video and I’ve ordered both books that you’ve recommended, Dr. Early. I’m very interested in Christian history, it’s such an important factor in European/Near Eastern History. I don’t think a thorough understanding of the history can be attained without studying the history of of the religion. They’re not on Audible, or even Kindle, yet, but I suppose it won’t kill me to read a few paper books for once - I used to do it every day, for as many hours as I could get away with, ideally 16. Great recommendations. Thanks so much for sharing your expertise on this program, and thanks to you, Steve for the great presentation.

At 32:08. Bretwalda does not mean "ruler of britains", it means something like "wide-ruler". Bret or bryten is cognate with german "breit" which means large or wide. "Walda" is cognate with german "walten" and "in the name "walter", which indeed means "to rule".In german, "walten" means to rule over something.

Hi Nick, I love your videos. I chose a different career, that I loved, but I think about going back to college for a history degree. It’s been a life-long interest of mine. It wouldn’t be for a career, I’m retired, but just for the pleasure of learning more. @@fakepolice1902 Sol was a pagan God long before christianity was invented, Helios the greek God Romans called him Sol ( the sun God) nobody knows what neolithic people called it but they made offerings to the sun God long before the Greek of Roman eras. just look at Roman coins many have Sol on reverse, got nothing to do with Christianity or any Christian saints . Why do Christians keep trying to link pagan religion with christianity which came centuries later !? Saturnalia - Roman festival they gave gifts decorated trees , Christians stole it & called it Christmas, same time of year everything Christians stole Easter, originally the pagan Eostre, Goddess of spring new beginnings, new life , spring lamb , decorated eggs, all sound familiar!? Because they were around millennia before christianity. Irish and catholic churches worshipped Easter at different times of the year, until 7th century!!! Until the synod of whitby when they agreed on a date both were happy to agree with, 🙊 Doesn't seem very organised christianity, both those festival the most important in the Christian world & both previously pagan festivals at the same time .. Not knowing the right date for Easter is quite shocking, 600+ years churches worshipped different times ...

While the Anglo-Saxons and their heritage are nearly demonized in the UK. Some people want even to completely ban the mention of Anglo-Saxons in the universities, schools in the name of inclusiveness and Social Justice. In Sweden, the Vikings heritage is under attack. Woke liberals are running amok these days and unfortunately, the masses blindly follow them. However, in Germany the Germano- phobia it's even worse if Germans dare not to show utter contempt, disgust, and disconnect themselves from their Germanic ancestry they get attacked and labeled as Nazis. It's crazy that ancient people are being held accountable, vilified for the actions of Nazis who or in the case of the English, for the British Empire. Therefore you see Brits, Germans rather identify with the Celts or even the Romans than with any Germanic people.

The view that the original people of Britain were replaced by Celtic peoples from the continent is now outdated, especially in view of modern DNA analysis. It now seems that this Celticization was primarily the result of cultural diffusion, rather than major demographic changes. The majority genetic component of pre-Celtic British is WHG, indicating that essentially the same autochthonous people were there since the end of the Ice Age.

The monks of the Roman Church did not shave the head. The hair was removed with a pumice stone. At the time that the Mercian kings called themselves Bretwalda they were in alliance with the kings of Gwynedd who called themselves King of the Britons. When the alliance broke down the Mercians started to call themselves King of the English. There were Germanic speaking auxiliaries in Roman Britain from ( at least) the 3rd century, as evidenced by graves in Romano-British cemeteries. The situation at the time of the Anglo-Saxons was a complicated one of alliances. It was not a racial conflict.

When the Anglo, Saxons and and Jutes arrived in Britain, there was also a closely related Germanic language already there that had adopted some Celtic elements, like grammatical "do" already. When the next wave came in during the 400s, their slightly different version of germanic folded in. This theory was completely shot down previously, but is getting new life now. It seems that American historians still think that it is fine to be super correct when Western Europe is concerned and vague with Eastern because Anglo-Saxon is our culture so that is what they continue to do. Just one small addition to your digital map. Poland was Chistianized in 966 so make the amendments straight away because it is very unprofessional to leave it like that... Other Eastern countries, especially Kievan Rus was much bigger and had border with Polish tribes so except for Baltic states, whole Europe was Christianized by 966... Check your facts please!!!

The Frisian dialect of modern German, - there are ‚Friesen’ (Frisiens) in what is still today called East and Northern Friesland in Germany - has much in common with modern English: they say pan (pronounced pun but written pan) and you say pan. Its a significantly shorter step from modern Frisian dialect to learning English than from modern High German. Fact. Cheers 🍺 from 🇩🇪

When you refer to the British isles we wonder what are referring to. To the British the British isles are Ireland and the United Kingdom, but we in Ireland don't see ourselves as part of the British isles, but through the good Friday Agreement the The "Isles" is what they were to be called. Patrick was Walsh not English. Patrick was taken as a slave to Ireland by Niall of the nine hostages whom was based within the Northwest coast of Ireland. Patrick had come back to Ireland after being freed and went back home to Wales he decided to become a Priest it wasn't till he had a dream about returning to Ireland to free the Irish, prech to the Irish and spread the faith. Patrick wasn't alone as members of his family also went with him. His sister married a son of King Niall. So there was a union between both families. The brittons were actually an Irish tribe sect. So the the name Britton also came from the Irish. The Picts were of the North East of today's Scotland. The Picts seem to have just disappeared.. The Romans never invaded Ireland. The Romans built Hedreans wall to keep the Scoti out. Alba the gealic name for Scotland actually means land of the Irish Geal. They seem to be new evidence that says that the Irish aren't Celts but of an earlier older race of people. We in Ireland were taught that the Irish was made up of two races of people one of which was headed by a daughter of a Pharaoh. St colmcille or st Columba as he is also known. Founded the abby on Iona because his Uncle whom was King within that part of Scotland. Columba was a grandson of Niall of the nine hostages and st eunan st Adomnán in Irish was also a kin of Columba, whom wrote the life of st Columba. It is said that Eunan was born near Raphoe which is the head of the church in Tirconnell northwest coast of Ireland. Derry city was also a site of another abby founded by Columba. Ray is a parish within Manorcunningham which is said to be the oldest Parish in Tirconnell that was founded by st Patrick himself.

Patrick was not English, he was a Romano-Briton. The name being related to patrician. The term Iceni is probably a derivation of an Indo-European root cen ( kin folk, genetic, bachgen (boy child) contain a similar root). Boudicca is a Brythonic word meaning Victoria ( male form Boudiccos).

@@jacquelinevanderkooij4301 I hope that I don't bore you with this, and that it covers what you want it to. I don't know how much you know about linguistics, as a speaker of a modern Insular Celtic language (Cymraeg, known in English as Welsh, there is no evidence that Britons ever called themselves Celts. Greek - Keltoi, Iulius Caesar says that Gauls did.), we have an advantage in linguistics as vowel and consonant mutations are hardwired into our grammar. (Also vowel mutation is familiar in Deutsch in strong verbs and consonant mutation in Grimm's Law where the Indo-European pater - vater - vader - father.) In Welsh we have three mutations of consonants :soft, nasal and aspirate. Whereby cath (a cat), y gath (the cat), fy nghath (my cat), tri chath (three cats). The only other one I will use is the soft mutation t to d. Celtic is a linguistic term not a racial classification and German may be equated, in English, to the people, some of whom, are called Deutsch but the Latin stem German* changed in meaning from sister - related to - genuine and in this sense it was used to diffentiate the Cis from the Trans Alpine Gauls. It later referred to a North European and was used to describe two tribes, one Celtic, the Cimbri (Cym, meaning together and bro, meaning a region we still use the words today and call ourselves Cymru) and another tribe the Teutoni (Teutonic, Deutsch). ( Latin, German and Proto Celtic languages are all derived from I E so there are many similarities, especially at this early period.) There is no evidence of Germanic languages being spoken in Britain before the Romans used Batavian Auxiliaries. The Iceni were not mentioned by Caesar (Tacitus mentions them) but he mentioned the Ceni Magni. Most tribes just call themselves the people (cenetlon is old Brythonic for tribe or nation and cenedl is modern Welsh for nation, magni just means big or greater.) Caeser says that the continental Belgae claimed to be german, but what sense do they use the word in? There is some evidence, in Continental Belgic areas, of some German personal and place names but the overwhelming evidence is that they spoke a Celtic language! I would be surprised if there was no mixing of people as they were on the border of the Teutonic tribes but I am talking about languages and what relevance the race of two thousand year old tribes has our modern multi-ethnic-multi-cultural society I fail to see. Hope you didn't fall asleep!

All countries were small tribal areas before becoming larger countries ruled by a single king. England didn't exist as a single country until the late 10th century. The Celts Saxons Vikings all similar DNA all created what became the England of the past 1000 years.. Obviously America didn't evolve the same way bc its only 200 yrs old & was started by the British & other European countries. Kent* is named after the Cantii , a Celtic people. Scandinavia Is Denmark Sweden' etc etc..🤔 Northumbria wasn't a kingdom, it was a region made of several kingdoms.

According to the 'Venerable bede "The Christian faith replaced paganism at the battle of Winward Nov 15th 655AD when PENDA of Mercia was beheaded by OSWUI of Bernicia. Thus ended paganism in Britain. Many were put to the sword or drowned and the victory the result of divine intervention due to Oswiu's prayer that 'If I am successful, I will enter my daughter into a convent as a nun!'. So once again, as in Roman Italy & all other European lands 'Christianity' was established not by preaching but at the edge of the sword, torture and death! ( Islam was no different!). This is NOT the true Christianity of Love.

EASTER? Where in the Scriptures is Easter celebrated? Christ kept the Passover!
@built4speed101

Dennis, this therm Easter in Scripture isn't the same celebration with chocolate bunnies and hardboiled eggs. The KJV translators should've just used the word Passover, but this is the Linguistics during that time period. Acts 12:4 KJV And when he had apprehended him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four quaternions of soldiers to keep him; intending after 👉Easter👈 to bring him forth to the people. G3957 Original: πάσχα Transliteration: pascha Phonetic: pas'-khah Thayer Definition: the paschal sacrifice (which was accustomed to be offered for the people's deliverance of old from Egypt) the paschal lamb, i.e. the lamb the Israelites were accustomed to slay and eat on the fourteenth day of the month of Nisan (the first month of their year) in memory of the day on which their fathers, preparing to depart from Egypt, were bidden by God to slay and eat a lamb, and to sprinkle their door posts with its blood, that the destroying angel, seeing the blood, might pass over their dwellings; Christ crucified is likened to the slain paschal lamb the paschal supper the paschal feast, the feast of the Passover, extending from the 14th to the 20th day of the month Nisan Origin: of Aramaic origin cf H6453 TDNT entry: 19:56,8 Part(s) of speech: Noun Neuter Strong's Definition: Of Chaldee origin (compare [H6453]); the Passover (the meal, the day, the festival or the special sacrifices connected with it): - Easter, Passover. G3957 πάσχα (páscha|pas'-khah|aramaic transliterated word|Passover)[Grk] πάσχα LN: 4.27, 51.6, 51.7 GK: G4247 Hebrew: פֶּסַח‎ Derivation: of Chaldee origin (compare פֶּסַח‎); Strong's: the Passover (the meal, the day, the festival or the special sacrifices connected with it) KJV: --Easter, Passover. See: 👉פֶּסַח‎👈 H6453 👉Original: פּסח👈 Transliteration: pesach Phonetic: peh'-sakh BDB Definition: passover sacrifice of passover animal victim of the passover festival of the passover Origin: from H6452 TWOT entry: 1786a Part(s) of speech: Noun Masculine Strong's Definition: From H6452; a pretermission, that is, exemption ; used only technically of the Jewish Passover (the festival or the victim): - passover (offering).

@@built4speed101 I agree with most of what you say with a few exceptions. First of all, the Passover was mandated to be kept by all the tribes of Israel and not just the Jews. Second, Jesus Christ Himself ordered His disciples to keep the Passover meal just as set by His example as follows: John 13:14-15 "If I then, your Lord and Master, have washed your feet; ye also ought to wash one another’s feet. For I have given you an example, that ye should do as I have done to you." Third, most Christian churches today no not keep the Passover as mandated by Christ but rather observe His resurrection from the dead on "Easter Sunday." Fourth, I cannot find any command in the Scriptures requiring an observation anyone's resurrection from the dead including Christ Himself. Fifth, religious observances of a resurrection from the dead are commonly found in pagan religions worldwide like that of the Egyptian god Osiris. Sixth, I therefore have this question: Are the so called Christian religions of this world really Christian?

Individuals must be careful not to fall into the trap of the Hebrew Roots movement methodology on intermingling Jewish Mysticism based on man's traditions. It's noted throughout Scripture how people would ignorantly sacrifice to dumb idols and the best example can be found in the Book of Exodus: YHWH versus the gods of Egypt. You'll most definitely see who is VICTORIOUS in that event!! If you read the 10 Commandments, God instructed not to worship or serve false gods: Exodus 20:1-7 NASB Then God spoke all these words, saying, [2] "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. [3] "You shall have no other gods before Me. [4] "You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth. [5] You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and the fourth generations of those who hate Me, [6] but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
