Story: A family of three. The father has a tendency to spend money to keep up the appearance of abundance and prosperity even though the family's finance faces dire challenges. The financial problem becomes the source of quarrel in the house. The 10 year old daughter can't handle the tension in the family and her father's high expectation that supported her dream of stardom which eventually resulted in her anxiety condition. When the doctor suggests going to the psychiatric department, the dad refused because in the 80s Taiwanese people generally think that going to the psychiatric means being automatically labeled as lunatic (crazy). Thus, the father looked for spiritual guidance which is still popular to this day. The daughter got better the first time because she thought that they were finally going out on a trip to play (thus no pressure/stress= no anxiety attack). The father took the sign of daughter's recovery as the proof of the Guanyin's divine intervention and began his blind devotion and even willing to give away his saving to mentor Heuh. This contributed further to the financial problem and the mother decided to leave the family and go back to the film industry to earn money. The mother could not take the kid with her because custody rights always belong to dad during that time in Taiwan. But the mother promise to return with her earnings from acting so that they are move away from that weird Guanyin and mentor Heuh. The ghost wife is depicted as malignant because the husband think she is possessed and is against his decision to be devoted to the Guanyin. But in the end, the wife is just desperately want to take the husband back to reality not taking the elevator of no return (going to the side of Guanyin and increasingly dependent on mentor Heuh) With mother's departure, the daughter's mental health worsen and tragedy occurs when dad refused to seek medical attention and went to mentor Heuh for help who prescribed questionable healing ritual involving soaking the daughter in a bathtub of medicinal snake wine for seven days. ( Dad is blindly devoted to the point that he forgoes his common sense that anyone soaked that long will die. The snake used is one of the most poisonous snake in Taiwan too) This is also why the daughter call his dad to let her out of the bathroom toward the end but the dad listened to mentor Heuh who called an innocent kid's pleading the interference of demonic spirits. Thus, the kid died and the father lost his mind and remembering the perpetual nightmare he constructed for himself. Mentor Heuh probably called for the soaking for seven days and tells dad not to open bathroom doors so that the father won't find out the truth quickly and that she can have time to pack and run away. When the mother returns, she keeps asking dad where the daughter is (serving as trigger for the whole process of remembrance) It is a sad fictional story that is describing what actually happens in reality ( in Taiwan, news of children abused and died from parents or from the "spiritual mentor or monk" because of the adults' blind devotion to spiritual guidance happens very often) Similar stories can happen in the U.S. as well when parents thought for the best for their kids but their efforts ended up being fueled by their selfishness to acknowledge the reality and to identify the kid's immediate needs.

Great Summary. Especially the insight in Taiwanese culture. As someone who heard many times that prayer was the cure my Anxiety/Depression, I can only think what would be for a kid in this situation. Just one thing, that you didn't touch: the competition. Father put a incredible amount of pressure on the daughter win the singing competition. This, plus the constant implications that a son needs to take care of their parents, plus the whole singing in public thing, certainly make her condition WAY worse.

By the way the devs hidden a Easter egg of pun in the second ending song. As you can read Chinese, the following for your reference. The last lyrics of the second ending song(Lady of the Pier): "if there's afterlife, are you still (還) willing (願) (to be my father)??" In Asia, "Devotion" also means that you give something as return (還) after the wish (願) you pray for comes true. In Chinese, "still willing" and "return wish" share the same wording (還願). Naming the game "Devotion", however, not implies the devotion of a religion but the little girl still wishes the man to be her father in the next life after those sufferings. The first ending song reveals father's regret and the second one does daughter's forgiveness.

Ugh, that self-mutilation stuff about made me sick. Though I'd like to add that I was pretty impressed with this game. It was very surreal and creepy, relying on atmosphere instead of cheap scares. I was really reminded of Layers of Fear, but I think this game was actually better-made; all of the crazy events in this game seemed to be relevant to the plot, and helped to tell the story. Several of the delusions in Layers of Fear were plenty scary or weird, but sometimes just seemed random in nature.

Agree with Lydia with one exception: the ending isn't "her off to heaven and celestial playgrounds...", the ending is the dad getting close to realizing the truth and then collapsing once more into the fantasy that he did the right thing while he is just sitting there on a broken couch, in a broken home, watching a broken TV, having killed his own daughter. In other words, I figure it's even worse than her version.
@PoisonxTea5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I'm honestly torn. I actually think Feng Yu is dead, and trapped within his own personal hell, an afterlife where he's caught in this cycle of trying to lie to himself that everything was fine and he made no wrong choices, and having to brutally face the truth -- which is why the "Perfect Future" scenario resembled the beginning of the game so closely. I even think that Mei Shin might have been trying to guide him. But I can't decide whether he finally faced the truth at the end, which allowed him to find his daughter and she was able to lead him (paying attention to the lyrics of the end credits song, "For the one who's full of love, don't ask if she's still willing... If there's an afterlife, are you still willing?" points to the daughter still wanting him to be her father in the afterlife/during their next lives)... Or if you're right and he fell back into that fantasy at the end, becoming trapped back at the start of the cycle. Either way, Mei Shin is super, 100% dead, if not from drowning then from alcohol poisoning, and Feng Yu is very likely dead as well.

In terms of Walking Simulators, this was really good! (I define walking simulators as games where the Player only walks for the majority of the gameplay; Gone Home, Stanley Parable, PT, Layers of Fear, etc). Devotion kept things varied, and the characters were sympathetic, and it kept enough intrigue to keep you wanting more without frustrating you (except the very end bit). The storybook bit really broke up the tension well. Not as scary as PT, not as dull as LoF, but with a stronger narrative than both :)

LONG COMMENT AHEAD, BUT THIS IS THE STORY AS I UNDERSTAND IT: •After Li Fang has Mei Shin, she quits her job as an actress/singer to become a full-time housewife. This is in large part because that's what was expected -- remember, this is 1980s Taiwan (in fact, when she quit, it would have been late 1970s I believe) -- but it's also possible Feng Yu pressured her to do so. •Unfortunately, around the same time period, Feng Yu's scripts are falling out of the public favor. This only gets worse over the following years as his difficult situation at home, and Mei Shin's sickness, cause his scripts to become ever more glurgy, overly-idealized, and just lacking in any real conflict. (I mean, to put it in perspective, they became kinda like Hallmark movies where the only real tension is that the kid has an Illness but don't worry there's a Miraculous Recovery.) •Mei Shin, with some guidance by her parents due to the Birthday Grab but also due to it being something she loves doing, decides she wants to become a star like mom and sing for everyone! Feng Yu ends up pushing her too hard, however, making her anxiety around performing worse. He also becomes very overprotective, which doesn't help, not letting her go on school trips in case she might get sick and have it interfere with her training. •Also from a really young age he obviously had major anger problems (that scene when she's trying to get his attention from the hole in the wall! jesus), which likely were an early start to her anxiety. •Then, at some point, Feng Yu and Li Fang begin fighting at home. This does not help even a little bit with Mei Shin's panic attacks. They begin to get worse and more frequent. •Also at some point, probably when Mei Shin is *quite* young, Feng Yu falls under Mentor Heuh's sway. She lives right upstairs from the family, so she has plenty of opportunity to interact with him and Mei Shin. •Feng Yu gives Mei Shin the storybook, which she adores, in large part because he reads it to her and they spend time together and have fun (tragically, all she really ever wanted from him). Honestly, I think Feng Yu actually got that storybook from Mentor Heuh; the goddess feels like it might have been a representation of Cigu Guanyin, and the story's magical cure from a flower given by the goddess feels like the storybook might have been propaganda for small children. This is why, when Mei Shin and Feng Yu folding origami tulips together helps calm Mei Shin's anxiety, Feng Yu assumes that it was Cigu Guanyin performing a miracle. That's all just conjecture, but with all the talk about the "one time when I was really sick, Mentor Heuh made me better" talk and us not seeing any hint of what that time is talking about, it really might have been talking about then. •At some point, Mei Shin debuts on TV on the Rainbow Star Stage! This is obviously a show she'd been a huge fan of for a long while, given the marble box. She does super well on the competition, but loses by one point. This obviously makes her anxiety when performing even worse, which only makes Feng Yu push her harder ("Mei Shin, why won't you sing?"), which makes her worse... •Li Fang does not trust Mentor Heuh, probably in large part because she's always getting large amounts of money from Feng Yu, which is putting even more strain on their finances. •Li Fang's parents have to sell their ancestral home in order to lend her money to pay the bills! She decides to go back to work as an actress, but Feng Yu angrily bullies her out of it and they have that huge fight. Feng Yu also begins accusing Li Fang of being possessed, because of course that's the only reason she would be disapproving of Mentor Heuh. •Here's a detail I think a LOT of people miss: Li Fang leaves Feng Yu, but maybe not forever, and she certainly never intended to leave Mei Shin for long. (She also didn't say all of that on the radio; note how the audio quality changes after she say "Harsh?" to imply he's not listening to the radio anymore.) She said that after filming she planned to come back and take "her family" away from that building (and way from Mentor Heuh, so she couldn't keep her claws in them). She may even have meant Feng Yu as well, but she certainly planned to return for Mei Shin. For anyone confused as to why she wouldn't take Mei Shin immediately, well, she had no money. She wanted to do that film in order to use the money she'd get from it to extract her family from that situation, so she needed to finish filming first. •Mei Shin, unfortunately, didn't understand. Li Fang leaving and not getting to talk to her much while filming made her incredibly upset and made her start having anxiety attacks and nightmares again. This is the last time her father takes her to doctors, and when he gets the referral to the psychiatric department he turns his back on medicine entirely due to the stigma against mental illness. He begins to trust *entirely* in spiritual healing and Mentor Heuh. •He goes on his spirit quest, and Mentor Heuh tells him what to do. He needs to brew the snake wine in the bathtub! Then he needs to submerge his daughter in it, and lock her in the bathroom for "up to seven days." We see on the calendar that she was in fact in there the full time. •At some point during the process, Mei Shin is begging with him to let her out, not understanding why he won't listen. He calls Mentor Heuh (that second phone call), and she tells him not to open the door. Part of him knows he needs to, but he decides to ignore that feeling and place his blind trust in Mentor Heuh. (That's the significance of the mirror man telling him he "can still save her" if he just opens the door -- the bathroom door -- but he refuses his daughter's pleading and destroys her by deciding to pray instead.) •After a while of begging and freaking out, Mei Shin likely has another anxiety attack and passes out. This results in her death. Either she was in the bathtub and drowned (she could have left it, but remember, she said a LOT about trusting daddy and Mentor Heuh and doing what they said to try to get better, and in that scene where she falls into the snake wine pit, if you watch closely you can actually see that she jumps rather than being pushed; her knees bend), or her hyperventilating contributed towards her alcohol poisoning from all the fumes in the air. •When she's been silent for a little too long, on that final seventh day, Feng Yu tries calling Mentor Heuh again and she doesn't answer. Out of desperation, he goes up to her apartment and finds she's cleared out, but he also finds the consultation tape... and finds out that she's been scamming people out of money, and is responsible for the death of at least one man. Shocked and dreading what he'll find, Feng Yu goes back downstairs to his bathroom and finds that Mei Shin is already dead. Hit with everything he's lost and knowing it's all his fault -- as well as knowing that, uh, Li Fang is going to come back to pick up Mei Shin at some point! -- Feng Yu either passes out and drowns in the bathtub, or takes his own life. •The events of the game happen. Feng Yu is in his own personal looping hell, trying to lie to himself and convince himself that he didn't *monumentally* fuck up (the "Perfect Future," which you also start the game in!), but unable to do so and being forced to face things. I actually find it very likely that Mei Shin's spirit is trying to guide him to facing the truth; however, I'm unsure if he actually did in the end. I actually honestly believe that Li Fang is still alive and Feng Yu didn't murder her or anything; I think she hadn't even come back by the apartment yet. Everything we see of her in the game is either a big flashback moment (the fight, the phone call), Feng Yu's wishful thinking version of her (which is why she talks approvingly of Mentor Heuh in the beginning of the game, when in reality she didn't trust her), or Feng Yu's twisted vision of her that was how he saw her when she was simply mistrusting Mentor Heuh and trying to keep the family going. She was never an evil spirit or possessed at any point, he was just convincing himself of that. End of the story is either Feng Yu having faced the truth and being reunited with Mei Shin as she leads him to the afterlife/the next life, wanting to be his daughter again... or Feng Yu slipping back into denial once more, starting the whole loop over.

I really liked this game tbh, it was a bit more interesting than layers of fear although similar (which had too much jumpscares or more odd moments that didn't add too much to the story). Interesting story about a family being torn apart, then even more due to blind devotion to a spirit con. Wish it didn't end so suddenly..I think they both are in the afterlife in the end ( there was the bloodbath scene already and blood on his hands...she must have drowned, he might have tried to call mentor, but she didn't pick up for obvious reasons, and that spiritual sacrifice perhaps links to how willing he would be to hurt/kill himself to see her), he kind of seems to already be in a limbo already so he must have died somehow.

okay I got through the eye and tongue and the hand but then started to feel sick had to stand up and then immediately lie down for a minute. I guess self mutilation even in video games still leaves me queasy.

Wow, I really loved Tom n Lydia's version of that last song, hahaha, amazing While this is quite a sad story, I think it's really well told and was done very well. That ending was still sad even having already seen it ;n; Also, the fake-eye with an eye-patch is definitely the way to go, haha

my guess is the dad went to the bathroom to kill himself out of guilt after the kid passed away. the whole bathroom scene feels very akin to passing over to the other side kind of deal

Why are there so many umbrellas? I share a house with four other people and we probably have one umbrella between the five of us. And you can never find it! But this game has hundreds of umbrellas just everywhere!

Well if there are hundreds then you’ll always have an umbrella near by and you wont have to look for the only one you own :P

Why do so many of these horror games leave me more depressed than scared? Still loved the series though, Tom and Lydia should defiantly pair up again.

Well, let's see... The game started with wife wanting to buy some fruits to mentor, since Mei Shin's health improved under her guidance... And the Principal called her today and told that she tripped and fell in class. Then she asks where Mei Shin is, and all goes weird. So let's presume that this is at the time after the game ending, which we saw like some people presume, and her asking where is Mei Shin triggered the memories of husband. Then Mei Shin should be alive, since her health improved and she went to school that day, where she tripped and fell as principal told to the wife (unless she died from the fall). Besides, not believing in Cigu Guanyin's power is just rude. Also no poisonous snake survives being brewed for year -_- So, you know, what if dad, since he offered his sight, tongue and blood to save his daughter, got the anxiety attacks transfered to him instead of her? And what we see in the game is a big seizure in which he remembered how bad it all was before.

The start of the game was as fake as the "Perfect Future" room, unfortunately. It's actually similar to the scripts that Feng Yu was writing, too; it wasn't any real memory, it was what he *wanted* things to have turned out like. Mei Shin is happy to stay indoors, she's healthy enough to go to class, her health is improving, Li Fang approves of the mentor! But as "Li Fang" keeps talking, Feng Yu's vision starts getting more and more unstable and he starts getting shakier, because he knows deep down that things aren't actually like that. "Where's Mei Shin?" was his subconscious; actually, "Li Fang" throughout the game is just part of his mind, and his subconscious is trying to remind him the whole time of what actually happened and not let him keep fooling himself. All the offering his eye, tongue, blood, etc. stuff in that vision quest was just that: a vision quest thing. Remember, it was all taking place in his head, while he was in a religious trance, almost a guided meditation with Mentor Heuh guiding him. Also, remember that time is alllll messed up in this game, he's walking between years easily and stuff is also mixed up between them. The vision quest *we* see was a flashback to before what he did to Mei Shin; some of the things we see in the game's version of the vision quest are actually happening as Mei Shin is locked in the bathroom ("you can still save her, just open the door" and her pleading to be let out); him being in Mentor Heuh's now-empty apartment and finding the tape and finding out she was a scam artist who was responsible for the death of at least one man already was probably directly after that final phone call we hear where she didn't pick up. He went up to talk to her, desperate, but found that she'd skipped town, and the slow stunned walk back to the bathroom knowing then what he'd find... [shudders]
