As we trek through the jungle of Sumatra, Indonesia, a mother orangutan charges at our group while her baby clings to her. Our guide knows this orangutan pretty well and was able to calm her down before she ripped someones arm off.

Just to clarify to everyone who thinks we were getting too close and this mother orangutan was just trying to protect her baby, we were not. We were trekking and observing from afar. All of them were high up in the trees except for this mother and her baby who came out of no where while we were taking a break and charged at us. These animals are extremely dangerous so even if we wanted to, we couldn't get too close.This was a jungle trek through a semi wild orangutan sanctuary. This organization that lead us is protecting these endangered animals from poachers. Poachers are a big issue in Indonesia and threaten the orangutans in this region. This organization is also funded by these treks so without taking people who pay, they would not be able to continue protecting these beautiful primates. Anyway, thanks for watching and reading and I appreciate your care for these animals.

Orangutans are not extremely dangerous, they are passive and peaceful as long as you aren't doing something to make them feel threatened. It is always the humans fault. You guys were standing up, walking around, laughing and talking loudly near a mother. She wanted to scare you off because she felt you were threatening her and her baby. Always keep your distance. If one popped up out of nowhere you should quickly and quietly move away. As well, orangutans are so similar to us genetically that we can pass viruses and illness, you could infect the baby if you aren't as careful as you should be.

I must have missed the attack part. All I saw was an orangutan warning these idiots to stay the fuck back. She probably already tried throwing branches down at them from higher up and since they didn't heed that warning she decided to come down and run them off in person. Or in orangutan. Whatever.

This a classic example where wild animals are encouraged to interact with tourists and associate people with free food. It is not an ethical practice.
@HowardxDuck
@HowardxDuck 6 жыл бұрын
We weren't in the jungle to interact with the orangutans. We were trekking and observing from a far. We sat down for lunch when this mother orangutan popped out of the brush and charged us. So, you are slightly mistaken on the purpose of us being in the jungle.

The guides in Bukit Lawang Sumatra are well known for feeding orangutans to attract them for tourists. And this has caused some orangutans to act dangerously. There are some videos showing Mina grabbing tourists for food.
@HowardxDuck
@HowardxDuck 5 жыл бұрын
Absoleet I don't doubt that. This organization that took us were protecting these semi wild animals from poachers. They were funded by taking people on these jungle treks to observe the beautiful nature in Indonesia. I was happy to give my money to them to observe (from afar) these amazing creatures. But I have since learned that there may be some unethical practices in these jungles. Even so, they are protecting these endangered animals from poachers so... There's good and bad I suppose. I appreciate your comment

This video made me realize how terrifying an orangutan or chimp attack would really be in the animal’s natural habitat. They can literally come at you from any direction and they’re IMMENSELY strong. Not even considering the intelligence factor, that‘s scary.

I got to meet some families who farmed while I was in Indonesia. While palm oil plantations are killing the jungle it’s the consumers who dictate it. So if you want deforestation to stop then stop buying crap made with palm oil.

Good suggestion ! I once got pulled from a delivery job because I commented on being able to " smell the Orangutan blood " on Indonesian furniture an Australian army Captain was bragging about being a third of the price of Aussie made equivalent. Low cost usually equates to low ethics. 😎👍

The tourists didn't exactly leave mother and baby alone when she came down. They gathered around her every chance they could get, laughing and making a noise. The mother orangutan obviously felt threatened and wanted to protect herself and her child. Give these animals some respect.

Unlike chimps, Orangutans are pretty nonviolent. In fact there has never been a recorded case of a human killed by an Orangutan. Their first instinct is to escape into the treetops if threatened. That not to say if cornered and have no retreat, they won't fight, as any animal would. Likely this Orangutan was used to humans on the trail and didn't feel threatened, so if anything, she was just displaying some dominance and saying, "This is my part of the forest, keep on walking!"
