The car has a traffic violation, until it's fixed it can't be in the road. Kind of like like a broken taillight ticket in some states other states issue fix it tickets. Except most cops are cool enough to send you on your way. Towing the car to wait for a search warrant may be illegal but I think they towed it for the traffic violation the car has, or at least that's what they'll say.

Why it's so hard for everyone to understand that blocking a license plate is illegal, it can be used to block street cameras. It's not a "little plate" it's not a "little tint". Wait is the car automatic or manual? If it’s automatic and it’s in park than it’s probably not enough to destroy anything but the tow truck driver is an idiot after you said it’s in park while the tow truck driver continues to pull the car up and all the cops sit there and don’t even question it knowing what the tow truck driver was doing was completely wrong. But if it’s manual and your car’s ebrake is on than the only thing it would do wear the pads down for the e brake. But definitely if it’s automatic and in park it will mess it up way more damage than just e brake pads. But getting a search warrant for a black tinted license plate and impounding your car is out of line. But they do have the new license plates but it’s an actual lcd screen that’s either connected to direct power or battery. And when your parked you can have the license plate say whatever you want but when your driving it has to go back to your cars license plate. Also if your car is stolen you go on the app and report it stolen and it says stolen on the license plate and alerts police near by the car and every intersection the car drives thru alerts the cops. A lot of new car dealerships are offering these plates and you get a discount. I believe all cars will have to go to this rule of license plate. You have to pay for an app subscription and now you can show the cops your drivers license, registration, and insurance all from your phone. Also you don’t need to wait for stickers for your registration anywhere. Tesla, Acura, and another dealership I know are getting incentives to get people to get the digital license plate. But you can’t black it out. But in your case it was just a tinted cover and the license plate was separate. The digital plates is an lcd screen And is something your tinted plate is nothing like. Those cops were idiots and yes there are license plate that can cover your plates. They have one where a black curtain covers your plate or they have one that actually rotates over and you can put a different plate or leave it blank on the other side. So I get why they would think that bc there was wires hanging out but the fact you just had a tinted black license plate cover isn’t the same thing. They’re stupid to even think that unless the wires were attached to a screen. I have a version 1 but I have wires bc of my back up camera nothing else.

At least in my state, cops can seize a car and impound it for 30 days or so if they have probable cause to believe the driver of that car committed an offense like the aforementioned two as well as things like street racing and reckless driving and driving in excess of 100 MPH without placing that driver under arrest. If there is evidence of a crime in the car, then that car can be impounded without a warrant. Plate flipping is a crime which means they can take the car and impound it without a warrant since they already have probable cause.

So after watching the full video it looks like you guys have one of those license plate covers that turns foggy to hide the plates when going through tolls, street light cameras, etc. Also sounds like it was hard wired into the vehicle somewhere which is why you “couldn’t take it off”. That’s why the cop says instead of an equipment violation it may be a more serious charge. You’re mad that the cop figured out you playing dumb and now want to cry about the cops towing your car (a little excessive in my opinion but at the same time I don’t know the law and not sure if they are actually allowed to let you drive off with a license plate cover that blurs the plate at the flip of a switch) please stop trying to play victim when you were in the wrong from having that plate cover on the car. A man caused a hit and run in my town a while back leaving 2 people dead. It took them way to long to find the guy because he had tinted plates and they couldn't find his license plate number in the dashcam footage. Cops need to actually crack down harder on idiots with tinted plates, there's so many around where I live and they serve literally NO purpose but to hide yourself from the law. I 100% support these cops in this video. The TOW TRUCK driver however, I do hope they sue the shit out of them.

The cops had the car towed because they accurately spotted that it had an illegal plate on it and they couldn’t remove it without possibly doing damage. Most likely they couldn’t let them drive away with that license plate either, according to the state law they mentioned. The only option they had was to apply for a search warrant so they can have it removed properly and not mess up the car or the wirings. Getting that warrant takes a good while, so they had to have the car towed. I know it must’ve sucked for the dudes driving the car but the cops were doing their job and were professional and patient considering the disrespecful attitude the guy recording gave them. The tow guy messed up bad and just seems to suck at his job. Still, I bet he would’ve stopped pulling the car up and heard the kids out if they would’ve tried to talk to him respecfully instead of handling it the way they did.

I'm starting to see a pattern here... yes, the towtruck operator should be liable for improperly towing the car. Yes, traffic cameras can make mistakes and give improper citations. No, this is not how this kid should've handled it. He could've removed the plate, then installed another one later. Then he possibly would've avoided the tow truck. These cops are fine. They gave him the option to be honest about the plate and a chance to to remove it before towing it, but the kid doubled down.

What make this whole situation stupid and dumb is the fact that they know that putting any type of tint over their license plate is illegal. No matter what state you live in nothing can obstructs or obscures the visibility of the license plate, the front or back. I live in New York and we have people that put leaves over their license plate as if a leaf fell in front of it or they bend their license plate up in the corner somewhere to block off two or three letters and act like they didn't know what happened. You automatically know when you do something to obscure the visibility of your license plate you are subject to being pulled over and any penalties that happen after that.

But it is still a valid case and he has video proof of gross negligence. The not responsible for damage warnings are for when they are trying to do it the right way and damage unforeseen happens. You are not covered If you purposely do something that you know will cause damage. I think any reasonable person would conclude that the tow driver knew what he was doing was wrong and find him or the police department responsible for any damage that may have occurred if there even were any. In a lawsuit you always name all parties involved then the judge or jury will decide who is responsible.

Several points here: 1. Be respectful with cops. I always do and it usually results in a warning and, "Have a nice day." 2. Don't ask for trouble by putting illegal sh*t on your car. If you don't like the laws, obey them until you have made enough noise politically to get them to change. But don't be a martyr. 3. Understand that the driver of the vehicle is the owner of anything in the car, whether it's his own property or something his passengers took with them. The driver is also responsible for the safety of the passengers. It all falls on the driver. This is both potentially a liability for the driver AND for the passenger, as we're seeing here with the scooter. 4. Tow truck drivers need to learn how transmissions work. They not only seem too frequently to drag a car in park but also tip the flatbed UP to unload while the car is still in park and then force it out of park to roll it down (not good). 5. I don't understand how they can impound the car BEFORE they've APPLIED for the warrant.
