Cobra Kai has an excellence balance between honouring the original material and creating something distinctive. It creates high emotional stakes while also making fun of itself. It has a genuine ensemble cast with equal weight given to the Gen X / Boomer characters and the Gen Z characters, which prevents the story from getting stale because it is being applied to a very different cultural context, and it portrays an interesting interplay between the different generations. Cobra Kai has cheap special effects, high quality writing, and high quality acting - a combination that guards against complacency.

Also, something pretty incredible about Cobra Kai is that is makes the "weaker" chapters BETTER in hindsight! It takes the unfocused, rehashy, occasionally downright out of character moments in Karate Kid 3, and recontextualizes them to make you think about them in a different light. Instead of thinking about the movie as a studio-mandated remake of the original, with a bully, new technique, and tournament at the end, now we can think about it as an epic battle of psychological warfare, with Daniel and Mr. Miyagi going up against their fiercest enemy and overcoming, but not entirely defeating him. This allows Season 5 to put Daniel back into his darkest nightmares and show the other characters what they are really up against. We wouldn't have that if not for the writers recognizing the potential in what they had.

1989 was not a happy year in general. Terry Silver made Karate Kid 3 his movie because he was a villain with an impact at every moment. I knew he'd come back in the new series way before I saw the end of season 3. What a shocking turn to see him get Kreese arrested. When I found out Mike Barnes was returning I thought for sure he'd reunite with Terry but no it kind of makes sense to have him join Daniel since his enemy bullies from Parts 1 and 2 are now his loyal allies.

Cobra Kai: Got Better Star Wars: Got Worse George Lucas did it perfectly in the Prequel Trilogy, which is sad that no one at the time appreciated it as much as they love it now. The Sequel Trilogy made so many plot holes that cobra Kai learned not to do. Star Wars decided to make Rey the strongest character for no apparent reason, introduced concepts that never got explored after and overall brought the one person back that took the entire first 6 movies to destory. Literally Luke was the Hero for kids back in the 80s and then imagine how they would feel seeing their hero treated like a waste in 2018, they made Anakin Skywalker’s death less meaningful and they got snoke and killed him off in the next movie which doesn’t even make sense, and it annoys me how the younger generation will watch these films be disgusted and think Star Wars is trash. I recommend watching the clone wars, maybe rebels to an extent and then just exploring the lore, cause that’s stuff Interesting, How Tenebrae managed to conquer a longer spanning empire then Sidious and how Revan went from the light to the dark. All the lore, the creative people at LucasFilm and others created that Disney just shoved in the bin.

You're right, I never noticed some of these things. With prequels the appeal is how it happened, since we already know what happened. There was too much space between Return of the Jedi & the Force Awakens. Story wise. Personally I think Disney didn't do the Sequels justice. In Cobra Kai, the characters had the same traits. Even though some like Johnny and Chozen for example had a redemption arc. The Mentor is very important as well. I mean Obi Wan is one of my favorite characters of all time.

Honestly I’ve felt for a while now that, when it came to completing the Skywalker saga, Disney should have just picked out the best of the EU and turned it into a Cobra Kai style series. The need to have a new movie trilogy for “prestige” purposes blinded them to what was actually required to give the original characters AND the next generation their proper due. Contrast this with John Josh and Hayden, who, even though they originally envisioned their story as a movie, were willing to switch mediums once it became apparent it was in the best interest of the characters. You couldn’t really jam a satisfying story for all of them in a 2 hour film. Or even a trilogy of 2 hour films.

Cobra Kai is made with love, the new Star Wars movies aren't. They were just made as fast as possible to quickly make money. Disney didn't even plan out the new trilogy, which was a huge mistake. For example, JJ set up The Force Awakens in a certain direction, but Johnson reversed almost everything JJ set up because he didn't like where the story was going (which is incredibly dumb. We would think Disney wouldn't allow that since it would technically be moving the story backward, but this proves Disney doesn't care about quality, only money). Then, after backlash, Disney hired JJ again, which was another big mistake. Like the toddler JJ is (Ryan is too), he reversed everything Johnson did and took the story back in the direction he originally wanted it to go. Because of this, the Star Wars sequel trilogy felt like an expensive tug of war with one of the biggest film franchises to ever exist. And while doing so, they disrespected the original characters, storytelling, and world that George Lucas created. Cobra Kai is made with love and respects the original characters and stories while also focusing on a new generation of characters. That is why it is such a successful and popular show. People aren't going to watch the original characters they love be disrespected and disregarded over new characters. If people are going to revisit a classic franchise, it'll be for the original characters. Not the new. It's kind of common sense. Also, I'll never forgive Johnson for what he did to Admiral Ackbar. Smh.

Brilliant video, as I consider myself more of a new fan of cobra Kai (as I’m 20 and obviously wasn’t around during the 80s but absolutely LOVE the whole karate kid series when I first saw it as a kid) the similarities between Star Wars and The karate kid has ALWAYS been there I mean it’s so Apparent with even cobra kai having a few Star Wars reference (both 80s movies too obviously) as someone who was very disappointed with 7-9, new Star Wars has ALOTTTTTT they could learn from cobra kai, and IMAGINE telling someone 20 years ago that “The karate kid movies” Tv sequel would outshine the Star Wars one In almost every aspect of storytelling 😂😅🤔 new season of cobra Kai is also amazing with the legacy characters returning like Mike and Terry and feeling EXACTLY like they did in the movies (kreese, Johnny Daniel and Chozen are also perfect examples) And even managing to build a LIKEABLE NEW CAST, With great characters like MIGUEL,robbie,Kenny,Hawk,Sam,tori etc. It’s truly amazing What franchises can achieve with the proper writing and creatives behind it (Cobra Kai’s Writers have SO much respect for the Movies) the NEXT STEP is to either give the cobra Kai writers a STAR WARS MOVIE, OR for the Karate to start becoming lightsaber fights then it’s perfect 😅

One other answer is that Cobra Kai was never focused too much on new characters, but it was focused on the originals more. SW sequel trilogy was heavily focused on a chick nobody can and will relate to. They were focused on Rey so much, they killed off the original characters to give her even more room.

I don't think we always have to focus on the old characters first to introduce the new characters and I think something like the Creed movies are great examples of doing the opposite, for in the first movie we are introduce to Adonis way before we are reintroduced to Rocky, but they made Adonis compelling enough character that we weren't annoyed that we got to see Rocky in either 30 to 40 minutes into the movie. To me, all they had to do was just make the new characters interesting in there own right regardless of how they are introduce.
@KenCole2 жыл бұрын
Ah, but we're introduced to Adonis through legacy character Mary Anne Creed, widow of Apollo Creed (who watched him die in the ring). In fact, she raises him as her own, and the character of Adonis is so compelling because of his strong family connection to both Mary Anne and Apollo. His family history (as seen in the Rocky movies) drives the story and all relationships going forward.
@DarkHeroesForever2 жыл бұрын
@@KenCole That is actually a good point because it almost slip my mind, but I guess what I was trying to say was that when you said they need focus on the old characters first, it's basically sounds like you're saying they should be the main characters which is exactly what Cobra Kai did, and not that I'm complaining about that. Even though we are introduced to Adonis through Mary Anne, Adonis is still the main character, and not her or Rocky, but given the fact that he is related to a legacy character, it does make sense in that aspect.
@KenCole2 жыл бұрын
@@DarkHeroesForever That's a good point - I don't think the classic characters have to be the main characters for the entire new story, but they at least need to frame the story, provide context for, and have a relationship with the new characters. And if they're still the main characters, that can be a bonus as well.

Lesson 8: Don't contradict or break existing lore & canon. Expand on it absolutely but it must fit with what came before. eg Rey's healing powers sure could have saved Qui-gon in TPM or the Holdo manoeuvre breaking Star Wars space battles which JJ had to rightfully retcon although he did it very poorly. Not another lesson but a recommendation - Don't be antagonistic to fans: LucasFilm staff like Pable Hidalgo making fun of one of the biggest Star Wars KZbinrs out there for having a emotional reaction to Luke returning The Mandalorian was not a good look, Andi Gutierrez's now infamous "Fan Boy Tears" mug or KK's "there's no source material comment". Lesson 5 is a interesting one for Star Wars. It's true that the sequels totally ignored the prequels and the sequels ignored them at their detriment because there was an absolute gold mine of content there. But for future Star Wars projects going forward some will have to deal with the terrible sequel movies but there's so little there to mine because it was mostly a worse rehash of the original trilogy with not much new stuff. Current LucasFilm projects apart from some books and comics mostly ignore the sequels while the books and comics that do tackle them are even worse than the sequel movies themselves. LucasFilm really dug a massive hole. The other thing, shows like The Book of Boba Fett and Obi-Wan Kenobi have made similar mistakes as the sequel movies with lesson 3 so LucasFilm hasn't really learnt much. Obi-Wan, like Jake, turned his back on the force, Boba Fett changed from the legendary bounty hunter to a crime lord that doesn't do any crime. Current LucasFilm's use of legacy characters has been terrible. Even Vader in Obi-Wan didn't escape some poor treatment.

Im kinda hoping they dont overdo the Karate Kid franchise like Disney has done with Star Wars with so many spinoff shows movies etc. Thats also what kinda ruined Star Wars, they milked it too much.

I would like to partly disagree with lessons 3 and 4. It is entirely possible to have classic characters become supporting characters that we don't get to meet in the story for some time without making a story less good. Granted, it's not a movie series that is being made relevant again, but take as an example the Tortall Universe that Tamora Pierce has been writing since the 80s. In the first series of books set in this universe, we're introduced to Alanna "The Lioness" of Pirate's Swoop and Olau, we follow her as she grows up and trains to become a knight, and we see her interact with a great many characters. In the next series in this universe, Alanna doesn't make an appearance until several chapters into the first book, and her part in the events of the story is much smaller than it was in the first series. She isn't used to introduce the new characters, rather the new characters are introduced to her. The same applies to many of the returning characters from the first series. And in the third series, the focus shifts to a third set of characters, and characters from the first two series don't immediately make appearances to introduce this third set. This pattern holds through six series set in this universe, and one of the six is set 100 years before the rest. Yet new installments are generally well received and each series is still able to keep existing fans happy, while offering a worthy story for possible new fans. So no, classic characters don't need to be front and center and a springboard for introducing new characters. They can, but they don't need to.

Thank you for your great comment! That is a very good point. Perhaps these lessons might best fit legacy/revival sequels that are made decades after the original.

@@KenCole here's more food for thought with regard to Tamora Pierce's Tortall books: the first series was published between 1983 and 1988. The second, 1992-1996. Third, 1999-2002. Fourth, 2003-2004(only two books, but the total word count is about the same as the previous series). Fifth, a prequel to the previous 4, from 2006 to 2011(3 books, if anything even more story than ever). Currently, she's publishing a sixth series in the universe, only one book is out so far. That one is 2018. In addition to the universe I've mentioned so far, she has another universe, with quite a few stories in it too. That she has been publishing alongside this one.

@@ashleylentz2651 I think one of the great things in this example is that it's the same author that's in charge of all of these series. I think where movie/TV legacy sequels can get into trouble is when new creators are in charge and the originators aren't a part of the process.
@ashleylentz26512 жыл бұрын
@@KenCole not denying that one. The original creator not being involved is very much a misstep on the part of Disney. The only way this can be excused is if the original creator is keeping Jesus and His pop company.

No chance for Hilary Swank to be in Season 6 of Cobra Kai. She is pregnant and expecting twins for 2023. I'm happy for her but sad for Cobra Kai :(

Maybe a remake of episode IX based off of the Colin Trevorrow’s script.
