I always loved how effortlessly Avey and Panda can harmonize after being really discordant, with Panda being the chill vocal melody and Avey going absolutely insane lile a man possessed. It shows especially in their live performances, where Panda is the anchor of relative sonic normality for Avey to come back to.

Most of it is, actually. Signalling to each other and sound checking for the next song, too. You can actually hear Panda yell "It's good!" right before he starts singing at the very beginning. I once found a video of We Tigers where Avey went on this tangent singing "No, no more, no more monitor, my monitor, it's gone, oh, now, it's back, it's back, it's back."

Yeah. Also Sometimes I feel like they say random syllables to apply certain effects to different pads on the samplers and getting to the right banks etc. after getting a sampler I realize how much skill it takes to use them like they do. They don’t just loop them. A lot of times they have them ungated and unlooped and just play the pads percussively like an instrument and it’s so impressive how they do it live. I also respect how they play the samplers live in the studio too. I was reading how Ben Allen the sound engineer for the merriweather post pavilion album tried to convince them to just loop them and copy and paste the samples yet they declined even though it was more difficult the way they did it since they wanted more of an organic feeling. I’m glad they did it their way and didn’t compromise animal collective are legendary and are huge inspirations to me.

actually, it's the other animal collective band member deakin, who left the band while they were recording meriwether post pavilion. he was the main guitarist in the band and while he was gone it left a.c. to create a more electronic sound. deakin is back now and worked with the band on their soon to be released new album, 'centipede hz.'
