This makes me miss my childhood when it first came out. Get out of school just to play and get as many villager request I can get done within the day for furniture and clothing. The dialogue was also the best too and amazing.

my mom used to say boys get outside and play and we'd reply we're already outside! as we took turns playing our villagers and pretending the other was a part even though it was a one player game at the time. dialogue was really not slack at all. not like horizons which is just a few phrases repeated, still a great game not as good as this gem tho

I agree! New Horizons is obviously still a great game, but it feels a lot more shallow and like you have to much freedom too soon. I always preferred the safe environment of a town to the completely open ocean. You can also see this in how animals are purely nice now, and don’t have any of their previous spunk. And the music too, which is good, but feels like just generic happy music compared to the quirky and interesting beats in the Gamecube soundtrack.

Animal Crossing GCN is SO humbling. You move to a new town where you feel different from everyone and you're treated as such. You are just trying your best to fit in and it's never quite enough, down to the fact that the only humans in this game are you and your parents that write you letters. Everyone else are non-hat-wearing animals with way more interesting house locations and goodies than you (where's MY Pocket Pikachu?!). You're just making the most with what you've got. This was the inspiration for the game by the person who conceptualized it. New Horizons not only removed this atmosphere, it reversed it. You go from just being a villager in a strange place to basically playing god, deciding where everyone lives, who is or isn't getting evicted, where people have their businesses, and every aspect of their life. Ive played every AC game since the first when I was a kid, and I've always felt like there was no wrong way to play them. NH was the first AC game where I felt like I was playing the game wrong by trying to enjoy AC the way I always felt like I was supposed to. I felt constant pressure from social media (didn't help that this game came out during a social media heavy shut-down COVID era) to have a perfect "aesthetic" town. The villagers all kiss the ground you walk on and I cycled through repeat dialogue waaaay too fast to the point where I felt like interacting with them was pointless. They're just walking decorations. NH is great for people who love sandbox games and building things, but that was never the point of AC, and it made me feel very disconnected. I think New Leaf was the best of both worlds in that regard, it still had most of that same spirit but it had just enough town customization to make things feel special and gave players the freedom to do some really interesting layouts. Anyways I love Animal Crossing still. Mostly. :)

my god YES! EXACTLY! I had gotten New Horizons on the switch back in 2020, and it was the first ever animal crossing game I ever played actually. I was quickly disappointed by the music and later got more and more disappointed as I saw everybody else's islands. I wanted to do something good and just couldnt and i got heavily discouraged off of the game. Everytime I logged - and still log on into the game i see my half finished island and just want to close the game, lmao. Along with the LAYERS of flowers and weeds that grew cause i've been away for so long. Not to mention that godforsaken feature that is terraforming. I love the idea, but it's too much for EVERYTHING to be in my control. I wanted to start playing animal crossing for the village interactions, fishing and catching bugs, and it's literally one of the last things that the game focuses on. I got a 3DS and new leaf recently and I've been playing the game with a lot more will and I genuinely love it, it doesn't drain me. New Horizons is a whole other game concept.

Yeah to replicate the feeling of living in a town you can't have control over every element of it down to which way the river runs, it's just a strange direction they took the series. The dollhouse instinct was already satisfied with decorating your house no? So why did they have to extend this control to every thing in the game? Also disagreed with breakable tools and crafting, seems like they replaced the tons and tons of charming and neat furniture sets they had accumulated by new leaf and replaced it with the crafting system. I get that the first game's "point' or "direction" is hard to nail down, and therefore hard to build on in sequels, but I feel like it was always great by not doing what other sims like Harvest Moon were doing at the time. Now Animal Crossing has farming too! Maybe if they had expanded on the museum collection minigames (fishing etc.) and made them more interesting, provided more useful buildings and institutions with charming characters, and gave the player some more interesting jobs and tasks to earn bells and items it would have been more satisfying to someone like me.

@@nikovidya7994 I also noticed that, despite the game having the pretty much basic features (Fishing, catching bugs & donating them, paying off your loan, brewster etc) they are all overshadowed by the new features such as the diys and island decoration. I also wondered why they added it.. Decorating your house and adding minimal deco such as the pwp is a much better idea. Limit breeds creativity after all. The whole point was to live within the animals and town, not have complete control over them to the point where you can even choose where their house will be, and them thanking you for it.

I grew up with this game, i played it, my mom played it and so did my uncle and cousin... i really miss those days where i would go to my uncles house and see his house in game filled with so many things I'd never seen before and id go home and tell my mom about it.... they are both gone now and i miss them dearly. I really adore this game and i hope to get it again. i still have the memory card me and my mom used

The original game is incredibly important to me as i grew up with it and my mom also played it... i miss her so much :( New horizons absolutely lost what made the series special imo, all the games felt had that same magic the original had aannndd then nh came and just greatly disappointed me in many ways, a forced crafting system I never wanted, bland music, a horrendously long tutorial just to get the actual soundtrack to start playing, an island setting 24/7 , nothing to do with friends and family, almost no point in the local co-op(new but still) annddd the reliance on updates... i Uninstalled the game after months of not playing after launch.

Animal Crossing has been such a big part of my childhood. I have so many fond memories playing through the GCN, City Life, New Leaf, and New Horizons with my mum and brother. BLOCKBUSTER!!! I rented animal crossing from a blockbuster by my house. Oh man, me and my siblings got it thinking it was multiplayer. We were so pissed when we started it up and couldn't all play. I, being the oldest, kept playing and figured out why it was dubbed multiplayer and soon we all had a house and were playing in our town. Then I went online at school and printed out all the tips on animal crossing from cheat cc. (If you know you know) and started to skip time and doing all types of stuff. I say all this to say, we didn't want to return it so instead I put my Spiderman 2 or 3 disc in the blockbuster case when we returned it in the drop box thinking it was a significant trade.. they charged my grandma for the game, but we got to keep it..... 😁 priceless memories we had finding new stuff in the game and the music takes me back to simpler times. I'm over 30 now, married have kids and life is just so much crazier for them. I wish they had what we had to keep them grounded.

GCN Animal Crossing will always be best. The npcs actually had a very wide and diverse range of dialogue that gave them personality, the music was so unique from each other unlike the later games, events were sparse and few but that made them all the more sweeter, all the NES games built into the game...it simply was the most humble, warm, and simplistic one. Wild World/ City Folk was the best way to follow up and expand on the game; maintained all of what was good and just added to it. New Leaf was when things started to shift direction, but it certainly was the last remainder of an Animal Crossing game with personality and charm. New Horizons is literally just Animal Crossing trying to be Minecraft which could've worked except aspects like tools breaking takes away from the Animal Crossing aesthetic that people grew on to love over the years.

Me and my mom played this game together, we'd be excited for each event, help animals with their requests and help pay off the debts, we both liked fishing more than anything in the game so it was always exciting to see what my mom caught while I was at school, be it a fish or a bug, I really really miss those days and I wish I could sit down with her and play it together again...
