@faultroy Saving a dog in need is just as good as any breeder with can be just as corrupt, most shelters in my area do not require hundreds of dollars in fact I got my cat for 30$ and would you rather have that cute dog euthanized or adopted most shelters that I know of are full, they can't afford to have this many dogs with is most likely why your shelter has higher adoption fees they still take care of as many as they can but they can't save every dog, sure shelters aren't perfect but they try their best!

I adopted my Pomeranian from an animal rescue organization. I paid $150 for him which included all his shots AND two grooming appointments. So basically I got him for free. He has been my priceless companion for the last 10 years. He is fed speciality food, has regular visits to the vet's office and the groomer and has been taken to a vet specialist a day's drive from our home (which turned out well). I wasn't looking for a Pomeranian--I had nothing but terriers in the past and I loved them, but when I saw his picture on a web page, it looked like he was smiling and happy. If you have your heart set on a certain breed, you still might be able to find a wonderful pet from a shelter or rescue group.

@tth740
@tth740 4 жыл бұрын
@@cuentagooglegratis908 Lots of reasons to DNA test a dog. Humans have family history/traits to guess what illnesses we are more susceptible to. But if you get a rescue their genetic history is unknown. Yeah you could guess on what kind of mix breed it is or wait till an illness comes up. But if you really want to know than DNA test is the way to go. Also you can see if your guess is right on what mix it is. But no matter what the result of the test is, nothing can replace the love of a 70lbs monster hoping in your bed while you are asleep and proceeds to sleep on your foot till it is numb.(happens to me every few days)

@@towelman8589 thank you! As you have said the older ones always get overlooked. The other thing is I'm really not interested in training a puppy that might outlive me, I don't know. The other thing is that Billy is almost eleven, and whenever I do get another dog it isn't fair to him to have a puppy jumping around. I plan on taking him with me so that he can help choose out his companion. That is what I did when I got Billy: I had Paco come with me.

@@dagger6152 I don't know about the other Mary Ellen but I was named after my mother's best friend and my mother's middle name. That's fairly common down here in the South. My baby dog Paco, who is 16 1/2 years old, was named that because the day he was born I went over to my next door neighbor's house and picked him up and put him in my scrub jacket pocket and said that he was my pocket pup, hence the name Paco. Our mutt was a Shelter Puppy, so we had the best of both worlds. Fluke was a black and tan Lab/Rottie mix who grew into my overall favorite dog. He was a large breed and developed hip problems late in life, which is often common with dogs his size (85 lbs). Fluke would greet you with a smile (and a tail wag), which might be misinterpreted by humans who did not know him. He was not a bit aggressive towards strangers, but would bark when cars pulled into the driveway as a way of announcing their arrival. Needless to say, we had no problems with theft at our rural SC home. Fluke lived 16 years and I miss him dearly! I am currently looking for an adult rescue dog to compliment our family.

We've never paid more than $50 for a dog, to my knowledge. Never went to breeders either, but they have their place. (I read an article about this poor woman that lost both shelter dogs, then got a dog from a breeder that lived longer then they did.) My family was fortunate enough to find strays, or get second hand dogs. A couple came from the pound, but only one stayed. Up until the past few years, the animals just found us. (I'm the only one that wants a dog. It's depressing.)

I guess it depends per country, here in the Netherlands the shelters normally have up to 15 dogs in big cities and in my city there are only 3 shelter dogs and they usually are either sheppards or pit bulls who often have some sort of health issues or else that makes them not the right dog for many people. Breeding is not bad but yeah shelter dogs deserve homes too except here there aren't that many and there isn't a lot of choice.

Mine is trained as my service dog so he gets to go everywhere and has only once been left alone in the house. Nice summary. I like the quick breakdown of the individual breeds. I recently processed a study indicating annual cost between 1500 and 3200 $ depending on breed, size and location we live. While I am fully convinced a dog is worth every cent, it is also very important to understand the costs involved. One example is health insurance. They often exclude breed specific diseases from the policy. This could lead to surprises later on in life. I would emphasise to pay special attention on this point. 🙂

I rescued my Mini German Spitz approx three years ago. when previous owner died. I was told he was six years, old. Well, he was likely at least eight at the time, unneutered, kept outside and used for breeding. He is totally blind due to a genetic issue. His teeth were in terrible shape, six were abscessed and he also had a benign oral tumour. Taking into account, neutering, vaccinations, and three extensive dental surgeries to remove all his teeth and the tumour came back the first time it was removed. Total cost so far, is $6,000.00. He is now at least twelve and very spoiled. The longevity of his breed is 14-16 years. He is very well fed, and cared for, so hopefully he'll live a lot longer, Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine a free dog could cost this much, and that doesn't include trips to the groomer. I purchased equipment to do that myself now, because even with Senior Discounts that is still exepensive. Everyone thinks he's adorable!

Trust me unless you need a dog for example if you have allergies then just do yourself and the dogs a favor and get a pup from the pound or the shelter. (He was big enough to jump a nice sized fence easily) Look at local rescues or shelters before rushing to breeders.

i just stumbled upon your channel and love your content! i have a treeing walker coonhound (very similar to #8 on this list), they average about $400-$600, very easy to groom at home and are mostly overall healthy dogs. i would love to see a video comparing redbone. bluetick and treeing walker coonhounds.

We just got a Jack Russell mix from a shelter. He was neutered and the current heartworm treatment is on the shelter. The shelter was able to let us foster while the heartworm treatment finishes, letting us test out my allergies. All has gone very well thus far. And yes, less food so we can purchase better quality and still not break the bank. I almost fainted at the quantities for larger breeds. :)

Just saying, Such as those Jack Russel's have high energy And Aren't really a Real starter dog if I say, they need serious training and they have a nature of chasing anything small and furry such as little pets which I highly put that in mind since I know my friend got one and it ate her.. hamster too so..

I have 3 dogs We first got P.J. from a friend of my mom’s since her son couldn’t take care of hi anymore. He is a pug mix. Next we got Loki. We went to a pet smart and picked him. He is a chihuahua mix. He originally was gonna be my brother’s dog but my we ended up taking him. My sister named him, that’s why he’s named Loki Last but not least, we got Uno. We got Uno from a friend of my mom’s since she was moving into an apartment and couldn’t take Uno with her. You see, Uno is a big ‘ol German Shepherd. He requires a lot of attention but it’s worth it.

We love our little puppy but if it were not for the shutdown I would worry about our lifestyles clashing. I still thank God for her little puppy heart but if we do it again, I think old is best for us.

I got my first rat terrier for free, when 5 previous owners couldn't manage to deal with his activity level (he was just under a year old when I got him.) He quickly became the constant companion for my oldest daughter. My second rat terrier was also free (she obviously was being used as a squirrel dog, and didn't come when called, so was abandoned, and followed my sister home.) My brother in law originally thought she would be a good lap dog. WRONG! A 3 year old hunting terrier is much more active than a lap dog. So I ended up with her in about a week and a half. I've had her 11 years, and she's only cost "basic maintenance." At 14 years old, she is finally starting to be a lap dog. 😁

Sometimes they have adds giving away a free dogs . Most posts saying free dog is the same as a shelter dog because if they can't give them away they end up at a shelter and you are still saving a dogs life. Plus you save paying a hundred to two hundred dollars.

How about a stray mutt that chose the car we had on front of our car to have their babies, then when she saw one of them going away said "hell no" and made him come back by fighting the cats in the house that was going to be his forever home. 2x1 and zero initial spending. The neutering of her was done by a government campaign so free, they have never been seriously ill so little medical cost, we basically just feed them and they're good to go. That's the jackpot. Oh and did I mention they show an special kind of affection towards us, as if they know we changed their lives and *that* can't be purchased.

These dog breeds may be affordable, but most are not good for first-time dog owners, per one of your own lists. You could be spending a good amount of money just on training. Mutts are the best. Especially if they are a lab mix. My dog was free, vaccinations are cheap if you do them yourself and just get the rabies vaccine done by the vet. She's been incredibly healthy for her first 11 years and only now, towards the end of her 11th year has she cost any money at the vet, which was to remove a large tumor. She's doing great and shows no sign of slowing down any time soon. Shelter dogs are great bc the adoption price usually includes spay/neuter, vaccines, microchip, and sometimes even their first vet visit. Plus you're saving a life. Our local shelter is no-kill, but they can get quite expensive for purebred dogs, up to almost $500! We have mostly pitbulls and pit mixes and then a few chihuahuas/chi mixes. These two "breeds" make up probably 80-90% of the dogs in the shelter. Because of this, if you want anything other than those breeds, you often have to get a dog from a breeder. It kinda sucks.

By far, the biggest cost is vet bills and those quoted in this video are very low. Cost of purchase, by comparison, fore even an expensive dog, is insignificant. And who would take a Jack Russell in for grooming with the possible exception of a nail trim? In the urban northwest, the cost of shelter or rescue dogs can be on the order of 300 - 500. Reasonable, considering the cost the shelter spends for housing and medical car.
