Their tongue is actually more than just blue (that just happens to be what we see). To most other predators that see higher frequencies of light it's actually blindingly bright, similar to a street sign at night. So to other creatures it's a much more impressive/scary display.

We get so many of them down where I live. They scare me sometimes if I sneak up on them and they do their threat display of opening their mouths to show off that blue tongue! The lizard you were showing with the stubby tail when you were talking about blue tongues detaching their tails wasn't a blue tongue but a shingle back lizard. I see now that shinglebacks are in the bluetongue family, we used to always call them stumpy tails.

As head of knights of the iguana I can recommend iodine as the best method to rid your blue tongue of mites. You also have to thoroughly clean their enclosure at least weekly until the mites are gone. The mite eggs will hatch and be able to breed if you wait to long between cleanings. After they are gone you can go back to normal cleanings.

For an informational channel, it's a pretty severe slip-up to not mention that the tails they grow back are never the same shape or size as the original and they lack the ability to move it, so it's still significant permanent damage. This is true for all lizards that can drop their tail.

Loved this video Danielle, as always. I have just one small critique. Australia is not down under anywhere, so please don't call us that. North, south, east and west are directions across the Earth, not in altitude. Except for that small inaccuracy, these are great, fascinating and informative videos. I love them and your work. Thanks and kind regards.

@@Glaaki13 Yes they're common pets in the reptile trade. Do your research and give them a lot of habitat space. Make sure you're ready for that kind of commitment
