One thing that always impresses me with animals as leaders isn't just the music per se, but the production behind them. The production itself is a masterpiece with all the little background guitars, tones, alien soundscapes and glitches. There's a masterpiece underneath this masterpiece just layering. It'd be impossible to not be this badass with that amount of awesome production and sense of what needs to be there even if its barely audible. It's fun to listen to just the background of animals as leaders songs too. This song has like underlying invader zim vibes being layered with awesome atmospheres and classical vibe.

Are you talking about songwriting or ability? If it's ability, I can remember when I was younger thinking "there's no way I'm going to be able to play 'Rust in Peace...Polaris'"...and then one day I did. If it makes you feel any better, try to come to terms with the idea that not even Tosin Abasi or John Petrucci are perfect guitarists; Chris Broderick said in an interview that there are tons of things to always be learning on the guitar, and that since there's so many he has to prioritize greatly. He's right.

kshayk0 I wouldn't be surprised if the liquid swirly stuff was CGI. A lot of the "emitters" look CGI'd as well as some of the patterns which are literally constructed from those wave things.
@OhDelta9

jollyjollyO The only thing that's CGI is the very simply done soundwave visualizations, the rest is literally just swirl dyed liquid filmed with either a water proof camera or through a clear container. Not very hard to reproduce but simply visually appealing.

The brain's right side also helps us to comprehend visual imagery and make sense of what we see. It plays a role in language, particularly in interpreting context and a person's tone." ***** I don't particularly think knowing theory has anything to do with it as I know zero theory but love music that is clearly theory-driven, I just think it was my opinion at the time. @joshuaalexander7313 10 жыл бұрын
***** I've taken six years of theory formally & had jazz instruction (i'm a drummer) for two now (on my way to Berklee hopefully) & I think Weightless was the most disappointing record of my entire life to hear, coming off the heels of the inspiring, groundbreaking self-titled album. It lacked greatly the same melodic feel of the self-titled, had no guitar / drum parts that blew me away (see: CAFO, Song of Solomon, Thoroughly @ Home, etc.), the production was bland compared to the lush, organic atmosphere of the self-titled, & I honestly couldn't tell the difference between most of the songs still after ten or more full listens (whereas in the debut, each song inhabited its own world of sound & was instantly recognizable). It's really interesting to see someone arrive at such an opposite conclusion I did - especially someone also into the technical / theoretical constructs of music. (Not coming at you aggressively - just surprised by yours - and others - passionate praise of the album).

Yep, named after guitarist Tom Lippincott. Tosin talks about it at the start of the Lippincott: Guitar Center session video

A good idea when making this music video is that instead of using just water, milk, coloring and washing up liquid. They should've added some sparkling water. Im sure that would've made some cool patterns.

This was by far my favorite album of 2014. JFAC's upcoming Sun Eater looks like it'll be beast as well, sad thing is, AAL always falls under the radar during the votes for album of the year, which is a fucking shame. I honestly think this is their best work. The first album was great, but the drum tracks sounded raped once in a while. Weightless was so disappointing for me, I love AAL but it felt like a Tosin Abasi solo album - no melody, just complicated techniques meshed together. This album really swerved away from that. I hope this band goes on to become legendary.

Sid P I agree. This is their best work by far. I was completely blown away by the debut at the time. Weightless was a disappointment for me. But this.. this is fantastic. Matt Garstka is the shit, and both Tosin and Javier have grown so much. Oh, and THAT BASS.. thanks Nolly!

Ah, prog metal is a niche subgenre in an already niche genre (metal). So I don't think it's unreasonable for AAL to largely unrecognized by metal hammer & the like. Much the same way I don't expect chart music media to be recognising metal in general. That's my take on it anyway.

meh weightless was the album i first heard by them. as soon as i heard that thumb slapped into to an infinite regression i was immediately hooked and thought they had one of the coolest sounds i've ever heard. fucking real. so awesome. joy of motion exceeded my expectations by worlds... love these guys

***** Actually there's no Matt Halpern on the first album. It is all programmed drums (which Misha was a part of, so that might explain why you thought it was Halpern) . Sounds very realistic though. Matt Halpern has never played on any AAL albums. In fact Navene's drumming is only heard on weightless.
