@skittensays While birds do have taste,what they dont have is the ability to detect capsaicin. Thats what makes spicy food burn. Its a pepper plant defense mechanism. Birds are just straight up immune to it tho.
@Galaxia7Ай бұрын
It's not just a defense mechanism, it's like these plants evolved with a specific seed disperser in mind: birds. They didn’t want mammals to get into their seeds' business
@DoctorgatorrАй бұрын
@Galaxia7 also true. Most of the time, the seeds make it through the birds digestive system unharmed, so it spreads them around for them. Nature is crazy fr
@Dell-ol6hbАй бұрын
It's because the pepper plant "wants" birds to eat its fruit and spread its seeds, that's why capsaicin really only affects mammals, that's because birds will just eat the fruit mostly intact and poop out the seeds later on whereas most mammals would crush and destroy the seeds by chewing the fruit which would be useless for the pepper plants in terms of spreading its seeds around

8:48 when you’re falling like that, you’ve got to spread yourself out as much as possible. it hurts like hell when you smack the ground, but then you would at least have a chance to save yourself. We had a guide on a trip in the Rocky Mountains teach us about that because he would do winter search and rescue and you might lose your footing and start sliding down or rolling down the slope. He told us he had to use his ice pick to save his life a couple of times.

11:00 actually birds are not sensitive to spices at all. Peppers were made by plants so that only birds would disperse their seeds, so the spices repel mammals...until humans arrived.
@Xanderj8913 күн бұрын
Rather, since birds aren’t sensitive to capcasin, the plants producing those got spread by birds and avoided by animals, natural selection resulting in it surviving. No determinism or “did this *to* X” going on w/ evolution, it’s just random and what happens to survive.

5:14 this part with the air canon is legit a tradition dating back to the very foundation of carnivals and stuff like that. Back in the 20s(?) if I’m not mistaken people were obviously super conservative and the carnivals were a place that younger couples could go to have wild and wacky fun without worrying about old folks pitching a fit. The air blasters are 100% meant to flip skirts and has always been a staple of carny culture for adventurous women to get away with flashing their guys and acting embarrassed or dude tricking their girlfriends into walking the air blast lines and startling them. I ain’t arguing it’s morally right or wrong… I just think it’s funny and am really happy it’s still a thing now a days. …I mean… they don’t have the little people running around dressed as clowns harassing the patrons and flipping skirts anymore, but atleast the air canons are still a thing😂!

Yes birds have taste receptors, but they’re immune to capsaicin, since they’re a great way for the seeds of spicy peppers to be dispersed.

@ArcticTronАй бұрын
As I'm sure other people are going to say birds can taste but their taste buds are not affected by at least capsaicin and maybe other chemicals that make spicy food spicy, which worked out for them since mammals usually crush the seeds completely while birds do not, allowing for better dispersion of the seeds. I guess I will take this opportunity to recommend the video "The Geography of Spices and Herbs" from Atlas Pro because his content is awesome, even this older video of his.

Capcaicin does not work on birds by design. Peppers evolved to taste hot so no other animals would eat them except birds who cannot taste that heat. The birds eat the peppers then defecate the seeds which spreads them around so the peppers can spread and regrow. Then humans came along and went "hey this makes my mouth feel like it's on fire. Neat. Imma put it in my food."
